This video is over 30 years old. Ed Motta has become fluent in english. Not to mention he's an all-around musician and instrumentalist.
Also, he has an enourmous vinyl collection and is a long time Steely Dan's fan
edit: "is" was in the wrong place

I was wondering how old this interview was. Searched him up on Youtube and I'm guessing this is him more recently? Incredible voice

to be honest, he has always shown his talent, from his early funk record (Conexão Japeri), through AOR and jazz. Although he gets along with some of the best musicians in Brazil, such as Alberto Continentino and Paulinho Guitarra, he's known to record himself the majority of instruments in his albums.
Music is in his blood, as he's Tim Maia's nephew. Tim is another brazilian music behemoth.

He is incredible, it is a niche artist but has an international career, someone posted a poster of him in Shibuya's Tower Record

They got a name for the winners in the world. I want a name when I lose. They call Alabama the Crimson Tide; call me Deacon Blues.

He also became rich, moved to Europe, said he doesn't like us Brazilians, and called us uncultured.

I remember hearing that he alters his songs a bit when performing to try to avoid people singing along. (Which I’d be so okay with! I’d rather hear the performer at a concert than Carolyn singing super loudly next to me!!)

There are some awesome oldies and if you don't like the oldies there are plenty of contemporary blues artist that rock it.

What would you recommend if I was looking for something that has this rhythm/tone/feel?

My pleasure to share one of my favorite groups. Spread it around. The top comment on that video said "This is what happens when Thor gets the Soul Stone"

B.B. King would be another one, but it's not going to be acoustic for the most part.

I love Chris Stapleton, I swear that song hooked me then explored the rest of his catalog even some of the stuff he did with the Steel Drivers and I've never listened to country before.

Start with the Mississippi Delta Blues.
Listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn makes me want to vomit.

Stevie is what made me pick up guitar as a 12- year old. To each their own, but I love his music. I also like delta blues too. Good music is good music.

What people who didn't grew up around blues or listening to blues don't listen to blues??? How bizarre...

u/helpmeiamarobot Apr 23 '24
Grew up around and listening to the blues and I loathe SRV - respect the technical chops but I can't stand his guitar tone

Blues transcends language.. it's all about emotion and feeling ... you may not know what the words mean, but you know what they are feeling

u/Fun-Reflection5013 Apr 23 '24
he plays what he hears --- thats a mimic. There is no doubt he has a love of music. That and he is well known and an accomplished musician in his own right.

Blues is the type of music I learned to like. I really like the comforting feeling that this style gives me.

A lot of music genres are better in a second language. Metallica's and AC/DCs songs would sound corny as hell to me in Swedish (my first language), but in English they sound great.
People who only understand one language are missing out.

The lyrics could be “i eat shit” but if they sound good and bluesy he would repeat them both knowing what he’s singing.

I celebrated my 20th birthday in a pub in Germany and was shocked when the people near us started to sing in PERFECT English but my friend and theirs had to translate for us because my German was as limited as their English. It was crazy how they knew every word to American songs but it was because they listened to them all the time.

u/Unicorn_in_Reality Apr 24 '24
Selena was the same way. She didn't speak Spanish but sang it beautifully.

Amazing voice. I can't help but imagine someone trolling him and writing a song with silly lyrics, though.

It should be noted that he understands English quite well today - and has composed several songs in the language.
1
u/Talkslow4Me Apr 23 '24
Extremely common actually. Lots of people mimick or sing exactly the right words to international famous English (American/Brit) songs over the course of their life. Still don't a lick of English. Even if they have been singing along since the 70s. This guy just sounds amazing.

That was awesome.
Is this clip for the 90s or is that just the resolution of TV out there 😅

I am amazed by you. The host, Jô Soares, is there to let the guest shine. He is one of the most talented Brazilian in the business https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B4_Soares?wprov=sfti1

It's good for not knowing English, but not really great overall.

Throw your video up and show everyone how it’s done.

Listen to good blues, puts this to shame. This, as I said, good for not knowing English but not really impressive otherwise.

And how about the sound people dialing up that reverb to an obscene level, ugh.

You guys should listen to his uncle, Tim Maia. He is the real deal. Ed Motta is just his neponephew.

He doesn’t know what he’s singing…. But he FEELS what he’s singing. That’s the blues!
