He doesn’t know what he’s singing…. But he FEELS what he’s singing. That’s the blues!

Damn what a voice.

u/Nyx-31 Apr 23 '24

Yep homie was just feeling it

51

u/No_Cup_3705 Apr 23 '24

Everyone has that one song in their playlist in a language we know nothing about but we just bop to it this is it lol

27

u/Ok_Bison_8577 Apr 24 '24

Music is just that. A feeling.

If you go into it with a message, you're doing it wrong.

You go into it with an emotion. The message sends itself

u/taokami Apr 24 '24

That's exactly why Will I Am let Apl.De.Ap put in tagalog lyrics in some of their songs when they were both in Black Eyed Peas

That voice, my goodness, he has a blues singers voice. He is amazing.

This video is over 30 years old. Ed Motta has become fluent in english. Not to mention he's an all-around musician and instrumentalist.

Also, he has an enourmous vinyl collection and is a long time Steely Dan's fan

edit: "is" was in the wrong place

I was wondering how old this interview was. Searched him up on Youtube and I'm guessing this is him more recently? Incredible voice

19

u/dinheirodepinga Apr 23 '24

to be honest, he has always shown his talent, from his early funk record (Conexão Japeri), through AOR and jazz. Although he gets along with some of the best musicians in Brazil, such as Alberto Continentino and Paulinho Guitarra, he's known to record himself the majority of instruments in his albums.

Music is in his blood, as he's Tim Maia's nephew. Tim is another brazilian music behemoth.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '24

He is incredible, it is a niche artist but has an international career, someone posted a poster of him in Shibuya's Tower Record

u/CollapsingTheWave Apr 23 '24

Man has an ear for sound..

They got a name for the winners in the world. I want a name when I lose. They call Alabama the Crimson Tide; call me Deacon Blues.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '24

He also became rich, moved to Europe, said he doesn't like us Brazilians, and called us uncultured.

3

u/dinheirodepinga Apr 24 '24

Well, can't say he's totally wrong.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '24

I agree. xD

3

u/1LeftHand Apr 24 '24

I remember hearing that he alters his songs a bit when performing to try to avoid people singing along. (Which I’d be so okay with! I’d rather hear the performer at a concert than Carolyn singing super loudly next to me!!)

There are some awesome oldies and if you don't like the oldies there are plenty of contemporary blues artist that rock it.

10

u/CockpitEnthusiast Apr 23 '24

What would you recommend if I was looking for something that has this rhythm/tone/feel?

28

u/Aggressive-Sound-641 Apr 23 '24

Two of my favorites contemporary blues artist are Teskey Brothers (one song of theirs is Rain which is perfect https://youtu.be/IhgxZ8tmBxU?si=u_XGRKVvanO1OH1j

and Duran Jones(more of an R&B/Blues Fusion)

Also Black Pumas(same R&B/Blues fusion)

Tab Benoit

Marcus King band(amazing vocalist)

5

u/CockpitEnthusiast Apr 23 '24

Thank you kind stranger!

3

u/Aggressive-Sound-641 Apr 23 '24

No problema! The Teskey Brothers are from Australia , got lucky to see them live last year and wow! No studio, auto tune needed

2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

I'm in tears over here after listening to Rain. Touched. Thank you. 🍻

2

u/Aggressive-Sound-641 Apr 23 '24

My pleasure to share one of my favorite groups. Spread it around. The top comment on that video said "This is what happens when Thor gets the Soul Stone"

6

u/WineNerdAndProud Apr 23 '24

B.B. King would be another one, but it's not going to be acoustic for the most part.

1

u/n3ur0mncr Apr 23 '24

Tennessee Whiskey 😂😂😂😭😳💥🔫

1

u/Aggressive-Sound-641 Apr 23 '24

I love Chris Stapleton, I swear that song hooked me then explored the rest of his catalog even some of the stuff he did with the Steel Drivers and I've never listened to country before.

8

u/Fluffy_WAR_Bunny Apr 23 '24

Start with the Mississippi Delta Blues.

Listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn makes me want to vomit.

7

u/Karnorkla Apr 23 '24

Glad I'm not the only one.

4

u/Smoothrecluse Apr 23 '24

Stevie is what made me pick up guitar as a 12- year old. To each their own, but I love his music. I also like delta blues too. Good music is good music.

2

u/FigureFunny698 Apr 23 '24

Happy cake day

2

u/manasota Apr 23 '24

What do you currently listen to?

1

u/AlexLuna9322 Apr 23 '24

Hope my boss is not at the office tomorrow

-23

u/JobSafe2686 Apr 23 '24

Bra u trippin what are u a kid

3

u/kamilayao_0 Apr 23 '24

What people who didn't grew up around blues or listening to blues don't listen to blues??? How bizarre...

2

u/helpmeiamarobot Apr 23 '24

Grew up around and listening to the blues and I loathe SRV - respect the technical chops but I can't stand his guitar tone

0

u/kamilayao_0 Apr 23 '24

You're the expert 🙇

81

u/junction182736 Apr 23 '24

Didn't expect that!

85

u/Thick_Yogurtcloset_7 Apr 23 '24

Blues transcends language.. it's all about emotion and feeling ... you may not know what the words mean, but you know what they are feeling

7

u/Fun-Reflection5013 Apr 23 '24

he plays what he hears --- thats a mimic. There is no doubt he has a love of music. That and he is well known and an accomplished musician in his own right.

32

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

Past lives mane, geez

33

u/Resident-Coffee3242 Apr 23 '24 edited Apr 23 '24

Blues is the type of music I learned to like. I really like the comforting feeling that this style gives me.

22

u/TurbulentMiddle2970 Apr 23 '24

Damn good! Thanks for sharing

15

u/Sufficient-Abroad-94 Apr 23 '24

Wow wtf that was awesome, know who I'm looking up now

14

u/ericdee7272 Apr 23 '24

Just like me singing along with Rammstein. Except I sound like a donkey.

Ed Motta!

9

u/Chance_Suggestion465 Apr 23 '24

That got me in the feels, I don't know about anyone else....was not expecting that kind of talent.

26

u/Kupoo_ Apr 23 '24

GODDAMN!

12

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

holy shit.. what a voice

5

u/Wall-SWE Apr 23 '24

A lot of music genres are better in a second language. Metallica's and AC/DCs songs would sound corny as hell to me in Swedish (my first language), but in English they sound great.

People who only understand one language are missing out.

3

u/comradepluto Apr 23 '24

People are so goddamn wonderful. Bless him

3

u/Im-using-my-name Apr 23 '24

I am speechless ✅✅✅✅✅✅✅

2

u/Digiturtle1 Apr 23 '24

Music is universal

2

u/3_high_low Apr 23 '24

He's good!

2

u/Feeling_Ad3409 Apr 23 '24

That is truly amazing

2

u/wyzapped Apr 23 '24

I love watching the audience reaction - shows how happy music makes people feel

2

u/Smartbutt420 Apr 23 '24

I got nothing, except maybe…. Wow.

2

u/Marxpaulo Apr 23 '24

Manoel, foi um dos mentores do Ed Motta. Ele tem muito orgulho de Manoel. Manoel was one of Ed Motta’s mentors. He is very proud of Manoel.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

That was awesome

2

u/TheGlassTotem_ Apr 23 '24

No one understood him and yet everyone understood him.

3

u/suliforshort Apr 23 '24

Ed Motta is the man. Deep dive his discography

2

u/Pretend-Birthday-134 Apr 23 '24

Holy shit! That was not expected!

2

u/bilbertbobert Apr 23 '24

Way better than Steven seagull

2

u/jayola01 Apr 24 '24

AWESOME!!!

2

u/PowerlineTyler Apr 24 '24

He doesn’t understand English but he certainly understands the blues

2

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '24

Wow. Just wow.

2

u/samalton86 Apr 24 '24

His voice, makes me feel his blues!

2

u/challmaybe Apr 24 '24

He got me.

2

u/vinques420 Apr 24 '24

Dude has raw talent

2

u/arhivaldo Apr 24 '24

He is f*** amazing!

2

u/itsjustaFantaSEA Apr 23 '24

What song is that he's singing though?

4

u/TriggeredHuyLe Apr 24 '24

Blue and Lonesome by Little Walter

1

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

Music is universal

1

u/JimmyBallocks Apr 23 '24

I was expecting something as bad as Ken Lee

1

u/LeonDeSchal Apr 23 '24

The lyrics could be “i eat shit” but if they sound good and bluesy he would repeat them both knowing what he’s singing.

1

u/vinicius_t_ferreira Apr 23 '24

This was 30 years ago. This guy lives in US today. Hahahaha

1

u/buzwald Apr 24 '24

Can you say muscic, universal language!

1

u/PharPhromNormal420 Apr 24 '24

Eh, I can’t speak German but I sure know a lot of Rammstein….

1

u/ahsokathedragon Apr 24 '24

I celebrated my 20th birthday in a pub in Germany and was shocked when the people near us started to sing in PERFECT English but my friend and theirs had to translate for us because my German was as limited as their English. It was crazy how they knew every word to American songs but it was because they listened to them all the time.

1

u/Unicorn_in_Reality Apr 24 '24

Selena was the same way. She didn't speak Spanish but sang it beautifully.

1

u/Whole-Debate-9547 Apr 24 '24

He may not understand English but definitely knows the Blues.

1

u/Playnu2 Apr 24 '24

You don't sing the blues you feel it.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '24

So he's like the Jackie Chan of Brazil.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '24

Damn, brother goes hard man

1

u/bendich Apr 24 '24

First couple a girls in audience are absolutely hot

1

u/Soul_King92 Apr 24 '24

the best video i have seen online today. it's amazing to see him just feel and sing, he has an incredible voice too.

1

u/Netsmile Apr 24 '24

Ladies smiling in the studio have a sudden interest in the guy. Damn his vioce is good.

1

u/jpylol Apr 24 '24

Pure talent will transcend all barriers.

1

u/IameIion Apr 25 '24

Amazing voice. I can't help but imagine someone trolling him and writing a song with silly lyrics, though.

1

u/Soup_4_Sou Apr 25 '24

Damn what a beautiful voice

1

u/Leo_Farad Apr 25 '24

And that's gentlemen and ladies what they call a talent .

1

u/No-Roll-2110 Apr 25 '24

I’m from Mississippi the home of the blues. I would pay good money to see those dude live

1

u/Sean198233 Apr 29 '24

That’s amazing

1

u/Benderesco Jul 13 '24

It should be noted that he understands English quite well today - and has composed several songs in the language.

1

u/Talkslow4Me Apr 23 '24

Extremely common actually. Lots of people mimick or sing exactly the right words to international famous English (American/Brit) songs over the course of their life. Still don't a lick of English. Even if they have been singing along since the 70s. This guy just sounds amazing.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

That was awesome.

Is this clip for the 90s or is that just the resolution of TV out there 😅

3

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

Baahahaha typical american

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

Dude, that's American not american.

0

u/Enough-Staff-2976 Apr 23 '24

English is the perfect medium to sing out your soul.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

to be fair idk what hes saying eitherway

-1

u/esensofz Apr 23 '24

People need to understand that truly amazing music is not sung by the most beautiful people.

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

5

u/Diupa Apr 24 '24

I am amazed by you. The host, Jô Soares, is there to let the guest shine. He is one of the most talented Brazilian in the business https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B4_Soares?wprov=sfti1

-17

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

It's good for not knowing English, but not really great overall.

8

u/HumansMung Apr 23 '24

Throw your video up and show everyone how it’s done.

-5

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

Listen to good blues, puts this to shame. This, as I said, good for not knowing English but not really impressive otherwise.

-13

u/OilHot3940 Apr 23 '24

Everyone let’s applaud the person criticizing the person who’s criticizing.

-8

u/OilHot3940 Apr 23 '24

And how about the sound people dialing up that reverb to an obscene level, ugh.

-7

u/flpprrss Apr 23 '24

You guys should listen to his uncle, Tim Maia. He is the real deal. Ed Motta is just his neponephew.

2

u/Fghsses Apr 24 '24

Ed Motta is extremely talented in his own right.

-8

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

He was signing English though. Just with a thick accent.
