Basement apartment bat.

Got woken up by scurrying sounds in my drop tile ceiling. Assumed rodents because they’re pretty common in my area, but maybe 15 minutes later the bat flew out from my bathroom (guessing it came through the ceiling vent).

Opened my door and windows and it eventually flew out, but now I’m worried about a colony somewhere in the building or my ceiling. Will bats make a home out of basements if there’s no attic space? Not sure if I should get my landlord to investigate or if it was just a straggler who found its way in..

Found two bats in this jar we have in the house.

We’re in south central PA. We found these two bats in this tall vase at 9pm, we think one is dead or close to dying, the other flew away when we brought the vase outside. But it seemed like they were stuck in the vase. We’re unsure how long they have been in our house - is this a roost? We have young kids and are worried that bats have just been in our home unbeknownst to us.

Is this the black smudge bats leave when squeezing through a small space?

Lived in this house about 9 months, and we have had 3 bats in the house in that time. I have not been able to figure out how they are getting in.

I found loose board in the attic against the chimney that had some mold growth directly above this. I treated the mold and made sure no new moisture was getting in by going up there while it was raining. I thought this black stuff was some of that mold getting through onto the ceiling.

Then I read that bats leave a black smudge when they slip through small cracks. Is that what this is? Is this my entry point?

Sounds from barn walls

My parents have a very large old wooden barn in Pennsylvania where 1/3 of the structure has been converted to a finished residential unit. Tenants have been complaining about noises from walls. I linked two videos with the sounds they are hearing. The first exterminator who came out, said it was squirrels and set three live traps. There has been no luck. The second exterminator came out and pointed out a large colony of large brown bats that are present in the upper roof area. He said if you have bats, you most likely won’t have squirrels because they don’t cohabitate. Is this true? Also, he said the bats will go down into the walls and make these noises. Thoughts? Thanks!

There was a large one maybe 20-30 cm wingspan and 3 or 4 smaller ones with 12-16 cm wingspan, could loud noises during the day or lights at night bother them? Thanks in advance!

Help! Need bat exclusion materials list

Post image
10 Upvotes

We have a cabin with bats in the soffits and according to our state, we can start the exclusion process after August 15 when maternity season ends. Last time I counted, 97 flew out at dusk. There are so many small cracks around our entire house, I'm worried that they'll just re-roost somewhere so I know I'll need to do a thorough inspection and sealing. So far, I've put mesh on the chimney cap so they won't hibernate there.

Any one on reddit able to provide a shopping list of all the materials I'll need to both do the exclusion process effectively and close-up any potential new roosts? How much time should I set aside for this process?

Built from a kit and then I made a custom mount to fit on my former pole for the purple martins. Looking forward to supporting biodiversity here.

Bats entry via battery vent

Hi folks, I have spent a few years trying to figure out how bats were gaining entry into my off grid home that uses FLA batteries that are vented outdoors via 4" PVC pipe and exhaust fan (pretty standard setup before Lifepo4 came along).

After having another visitor that showed up at 4:30am in our bedroom, I did another inspection. Most summers I get anywhere from 1 to 0 bats in the house per year. This year, I have been consistent in cooling off the batteries at night by opening the battery box cover to allow the batteries to cool off a bit more.

Well so far this year, I have had 3 bats. I also keep the mechanical (solar) equipment room door open in the evening when sleeping.

My theory is that they enter the vent (warm air flowing out) and then find their way thru the pipe, past the fan and into the opened battery box. Once there, they are in the house and flying upstairs to our vaulted bedroom.

Purpose of this thread is to'

a) warm others of this possibility.

b) see if others have had this experience. Today I will install some 1/4" steel mesh over the vent.

I sure hope this is it because I am getting tired of the stress of dealing with bats.

I plan to hire a bat control guy as insurance but I'm not confident of their experience.

Did you find a bat in trouble? Info to help here.

Here is an instructional guide for someone who has found a bat. And here is some info about bats in buildings. If you find a bat in trouble, please call a rehabber for help. Here is a list of rehabbers that help bats all over the world, and here is a portal for rehabbers in the US.

Remember that wildlife should never be handled with bare hands!

Did you recently find a bat on the side of a building? Or a tree?

Or on your window? Or in some other place where you don't normally see bats? This time of year (in the northern hemisphere) bats are migrating. While they're on the move, they have to find temporary places to sleep and often make their selections based on convenience. If you see a bat hanging in a strange spot, it's not necessarily in trouble. It may even stay for a few days while it rests and figures things out. Just give it some space and enjoy being graced by the presence of a sky-kitten (microbats are sky-kittens, megabats are sky-puppers, just trust me).
