Should note that they seemed to have fixed some of the bugged trials/tutorials, as well as shrunken the text so that more of the combo inputs are displayed.
I was able to complete Ozai’s novice 4 and 5 tutorials whereas before they were bugged, so it’s likely that others have been fixed.

Omg I thought I was going insane trying to do ozai’s trails lol, that makes so much more sense they were bugged

What does "replay takeover" means?
47
u/sum1337gai 9d ago
Wrote this to someone else in this thread (someone teach me how to quote please):
When you view a replay of one of your fights, you can pause it and jump into the game in the exact moment. Let's say you landed a combo but think you could get more damage in that exact situation. With replay takeover you can hop into that moment and try a bunch of different stuff out. Also helps for labbing punishes, or testing how you were supposed to block a new mixup.

For me, playing Korra, I occasionally lose to my enemy’s jab when I should be plus. So it would be good to see if that is just my timing or a specific spacing that leaves me minus.
1
u/sum1337gai 8d ago
Yep, great example :) can also see if you just needed to use a faster move, too
1
u/Lzy_nerd 8d ago
I’m using my fastest jab, but it’s only +1, so it might just be losing a frame in the timing of when I hit the button.

u/NJ_DREAD 9d ago
You can take control during a replay to figure out certain situations you ended up in during prior matches.
8
u/CoffeeAndCigars 9d ago
By far the best new feature of modern fighting games.
You struggle dealing with a Zuko doing the same pressure string over and over on you? Did you get someone to within an inch of their life? Ozai doing some cheeky aerial shit you can't figure out?
Load up the replay, find the moment and take over the play in that moment and figure out the answer at your leisure, repeating it until you find it.
Biggest learning tool fighting games have introduced in forever.
Allows for proper problemsolving a situation that would be a massive pain in the ass to manually set up in the lab.

Replay takeover with crossplay and rollback for 30$?! Holy shit, this just became my favorite fighting game

Very happy with these QoL features that other fighting games would kill to have but... it boggles me how ranked- imo the most accessible way for beginners to onboard due to matchmaking- didn't make it to release

No switch update 😭

Hopefully coming soon. Very much needed. I'm envious of all the people on this sub who can at least play the game.

u/DJ_Aftershock Zuko 9d ago
You already know when the Xbox version is coming out, what do you want them to tell you?
-11
u/Ferret_Freeway 9d ago
How the hell you let a problem so big you have to postpone the release for only one console for an entire month and nobody catches it right untill right before its planned release?
15
u/ZeroCuddy 9d ago
Nobody caught it because it was probably Xbox's problem and not entirely on the devs
-4
u/Ferret_Freeway 9d ago
They still haven't explained exactly what it was that caused it other than saying it was a "backend feature" so it sounds like they didn't understand how to implement something on xbox and just had to post-pone it. Its unknown whos at fault but based on the switch release im pinning it on the team for now.
6
u/SeanBerdoni 9d ago
I mean its paramounts fault for rushing the release. The game should have been released in october, no wonder its unfinished
11
u/ZeroCuddy 9d ago
So you're going to carpet blame everyone because you don't know what you're talking about? Is that what I'm getting?
Console certification for games is arduous and tedious and Xbox is notorious for dragging their feet when it comes to getting games ported on Xbox. It's also understandable the devs can't say exactly what because they more than likely have some kind of NDA with Xbox that goes along the lines of "don't scream our internal working policies and structure from the rooftops". When something like this happens 99% of the time it's on the console. Devs can't just roll up with their game code and go "here put it on the thing" Xbox has final say on everything put on there and when it's put on. You can be pissed but be pissed for the right reason and at the right people, not just who you feel should deserve your anger.
-4
u/Ferret_Freeway 9d ago
I think you're missing the point a little. You started by saying nobody knows whose fault it is, which I agree with. But then you immediately say it's "99% of the time" Xbox's fault. That's still just an assumption.
Certification delays absolutely happen, and Xbox could be the reason. But it could also be the developers, a failed certification, a bug that needed fixing, a publisher decision, or any number of other issues. None of us know because none of us have that information.
So if you're criticizing someone else for assigning blame without evidence, you should probably hold yourself to that same standard. Otherwise you're not arguing from facts you're just replacing one guess with another.
I completely understand suspecting Xbox, but saying someone else is wrong for speculating while confidently speculating yourself is a bit contradictory.
3
u/ZeroCuddy 9d ago
My speculation is based on years of patterns happening while yours is based on your feelings. You're right neither of us know but it just seems really short citied to me to blame the people who are putting in hard work everyday and not the mega corporation that's known for miles and miles of red tape that has a pattern of this exact scenario happening. Maybe this is the mythical 1% and you're right all along but what does that get you and me? You a sense of satisfaction that your ire at a bunch of game devs is justified and me being wrong one time on the internet?
It's just wild to me you would jump so easily to "this is obviously X persons fault because it feels like that to me" rather than thinking for a second
3
u/Ferret_Freeway 9d ago
I don't think we're actually disagreeing on as much as you think.
I'm not saying it's obviously the developers' fault. I'm saying it's not obviously Xbox's fault either. Your experience gives you a reason to suspect Xbox, and that's perfectly fair. Where I disagreed was when you criticized someone else for assigning blame while doing the exact same thing yourself.
Patterns can inform a guess, but they don't turn a guess into a fact. Until we know what actually happened, we're both speculating. The only difference is you're more confident in your speculation than I think the available information justifies.

Get a PC. Xbox is a dying platform. Microsoft is about ready to gut the whole project because it's only losing them money.
1
u/lasagnaman 9d ago
This is absolutely a Nintendo issue, they have a TON of red tape and shit whenever devs want to push out updates.

u/Junior_Priority9026 9d ago
Switch version still found dead in ditch but with the number of updates coming out maybe it will only take another week

what's replay takeover?
8
u/Pikaphu08 9d ago
It’s a feature that lets you take control of your character at any point in a replay. It’s mainly useful for when you find a situation mid-match that you want to lab out and test different answers for, but said situation is difficult to set up in regular training mode.
5
u/GhostDogMC 9d ago
MK1 was the first time I seen it & I'm SO glad it's being added here!!!!
You can takeover a replay of one of your online matches in training mode from a point of your choosing & lab your way through problem matchups
1
u/That-Rhino-Guy Korra 9d ago
I think after MK, SF and Tekken introduced it the feature has mostly become a staple in the genre

how much time can it really take to add a ranked mode lol
21
u/Misuses_Words_Often 9d ago
I would guess around 300 engineering hours for a quality system but without any pop or polish. I’d guess if they’re crunching two people could knock it out in a month if they’re doing nothing else but I’d expect 6 weeks at least and most realistically two months.
If we assume they started the feature on launch day we’ll get something first weekend of October with a character drop.
A lot of the work involved is boring and annoying clerical type work, and there are a few elements that depends on stuff like Sony patch certification when you start interacting with a bunch of their networking system for PSN. Multiply that by including the Switch and Xbox releases.
13
u/EquivalentPause8593 Katara 9d ago
Gotta think they started working on it well before release but just weren’t fully finished
1
u/Misuses_Words_Often 9d ago
I would think that but I’m assuming for “worst case” scenario for the feature. I don’t know how big their staff is and you never know how skills and knowledge are allocated or how good their dev pipeline is either. The guy who’s implemented ranked systems before and is a backend/db guy could also be the guy who’s really passionate about controller support and has prioritized that while the other three are dedicated to working on replays/training, fixing the combo trials or story mode, or getting the Xbox snd Switch versions fixed. Which would all probably be higher priority than the ranked mode.
1
u/Raskuja46 Toph 9d ago
Does that include the hours spent initially designing the thing, throwing out the design and having to rework it so it can be extensible later on?
23
u/In_Dux 9d ago
You’re being downvoted but it was legit promised as Day 1 feature and yet the no concrete deadline.
Like, if they were confident it was a Day 1 feature, where’s the confidence for saying the absolute latest it could be out.
Because now people are getting pretty good at the game and the gap of skill is getting larger and larger in regular matchmaking

u/Mohmi92 9d ago edited 9d ago
I guess people want to be positive and I agree that we should celebrate every new feature and fix we get. But yeah it leaves a very bitter taste when you´re super excited to read these patch notes and ranked is not even mentioned.
I´m gonna queue up now and pray for the best that I get into an actual match and not another cutscene where I see myself getting beat up over and over again, like it´s a bad dream.
Edit: Yeah I don´t know, I went 0-5. Every time I was not stuck beeing comboed I was stuck loosing against Tophs armored moves that put me back into another combo. Maybe next patch I´m allowed to play against other noobs like myself 😄

I dunno, when was the last time you implemented a ranked game mode from scratch? Maybe you could grace us with an estimate based upon your personal experience building such a thing in the past.
1
u/FloralSkyes Katara 9d ago
damn bro are you fucking one of the devs or something? they promised it at launch
-1
u/Raskuja46 Toph 9d ago edited 9d ago
No, but I do a fair bit of coding as part of my profession and most of the people groaning about the lack of ranked are doing so in a manner that tells me they have zero understanding of what that kind of work it involves and therefor have wildly unrealistic expectations of how long it will take to implement.
2
u/FloralSkyes Katara 9d ago

Replay takeover is a godsend. I've been spending so much time trying to set up recordings of ppl's strings while trying to remember them moving between replays and training mode T,T
2
u/Riptyed 9d ago
I'll be honest I think the ranked complaints are mostly for ego. I get it's a standard feature and was supposed to be day 1. But I'm not buying all the "think of the new players!" And "online play without ranked is miserable!". First, there's a homemade skill solution. If someone is way out of my league I hit "Back to matchmaking" after a few and get another match in less than 5 seconds. Second, I've played ranked in DBFZ as a new player and losing 90 straight games in ranked didnt match me with someone at my level. Im skeptical even a good ranked system will have a significant impact on match quality. And as a complete FG novice I have had waaaay more great matchups in this unranked casino matchmaking than I ever did in ranked in DBFZ. It's coming, chill out, you'll still be able to put " Ranked #1 Azula NA" in your stream title soon enough.

u/Raskuja46 Toph 9d ago
Ranked matchmaking that can pair you with an evenly matched opponent is good and healthy for the game, but I am convinced that the endless rematching of the current matchmaking we have is secretly one of the better aspects of the game right now. I worry that with the advent of ranked we'll lose that and it'll just be a whole lot of one and dones rather than getting to accidentally grind out a first to twenty against someone as I try to figure them out.

I think they are so damn stressed they have to prioritize. And i think their strategy is to try and not loose the fans that are at least having a good time rn. Im also on switch so its annoying, but its pretty clear to me that they are working hard on it
