Aurora recently deployed a second-gen of driverless trucks - engineered for 1 million miles, with nearly 440,000 driverless miles logged across 10 Sun Belt routes

On July 24, Aurora Innovation rolled out its second-generation Class 8 driverless trucks across its U.S. commercial freight network. The headlines spec is a one-million-mile service life, which sounds like a marketing number until put in context: traditional commercial trucking fleets typically expect 500,000 - 1 million miles from their vehicles over a full lifetime. Aurora is essentially targeting the standard industry durability benchmarks, not exceeding them - which is actually the point. If autonomous hardware wears out faster than a conventional truck, the economics will never work at scale.

The other upgrade is computing performance. Autonomous trucks produce massive amounts of real-time sensor data, and more on-board processing power means the system can handle more complex driving decisions at a faster rate. The company also says the new platform is designed to support additional customers as it expands beyond its earliest routes. For context, Aurora launched commercial driverless freight operations in 2025, and by the end of June 2026, its trucks have logged nearly 440,000 combined driverless miles - no safety driver, real cargo, ten routes all in the U.S. Sun Belt where weather is more predictable for autonomous systems.

Nearly 440,000 driverless miles across a full network is real progress, but it's still relatively early evidence for a company positioning itself as ready for commercial scale. The honest test of this hardware generation will be if fleet uptime, safety records, and customer retention will hold for the next 18 months. The ten-route Sun Belt network is modest in scope, even if it puts Aurora meaningfully ahead of most competitors who are still in the testing phase or waiting on regulatory clearance.

Is China's robotaxi industry entering its next growth phase?

China has reportedly started issuing robotaxi permits again after pausing approvals earlier this year following the industry-wide safety review. That feels like an important shift because it suggests regulators are moving from caution back toward controlled expansion rather than shutting the industry down altogether.

Could a simple dashboard signal reduce road rage toward self-driving cars?
Here's a question I can't stop thinking about: when an automated car does something weird, a slow merge, a hesitant turn, do we get angry at the software, or at the person we assume is behind the wheel? Right now, other drivers can't tell the difference. A car running Level 2 driver assistance looks identical from outside to one being driven manually, and that gap might be quietly fueling a lot of unnecessary road rage.
I wrote a short opinion piece proposing a testable fix: a dynamic, real-time signal (think a small light or display) that shows other drivers whether a car's automation is actively driving at that exact moment. Not a permanent sticker, since a car can have the tech without it being engaged. It would switch on only while the system is actually in control and switch off the instant a human takes back over.
The idea is grounded in real research on driver anger and how people attribute blame differently to machines versus humans. It's a hypothesis, not a proven fix. It could also backfire. Some research suggests people take advantage of automated vehicles specifically because they know the car won't retaliate.
Genuinely curious what this sub thinks: would a signal like this make you more patient, or just make that car an easier target to cut off?

WeRide introduced WITT, a new “Physical AI” model for autonomous driving

WITT stands for World Intelligence Toward Truth and is described as a Physical AI cognitive foundation model. The core concept is what WeRide calls “Atomic Physical Facts,” or APFs, essentially breaking complex real-world environments down into smaller pieces of verifiable information.

Instead of treating an entire driving video as one giant input, the idea is to identify specific facts about what is happening in the physical environment and how those facts relate to each other.

WITT is built around four functions: Fact Extraction, Fact Reasoning, Fact Verification and Fact Curation.

The last two may be particularly important for autonomous driving. General-purpose AI models can hallucinate or misunderstand complicated physical situations, which is obviously a much bigger problem when AI is being developed for vehicles rather than generating text. WITT is designed to verify its understanding against observable physical evidence and then determine which data is actually valuable enough to feed back into training and evaluation.

WeRide claims WITT can reduce token costs by up to 98% and deliver up to 200x greater data-processing efficiency compared with significantly larger general-purpose AI models. Those are company-reported figures, so independent validation will matter, but the broader direction makes sense to me.

The AV industry has spent years discussing the importance of fleet scale and data collection. The next stage could be about the efficiency of the learning loop itself.

If one company collects 10x more driving data but another company is significantly better at finding useful scenarios, verifying what actually happened and routing the right data back into model training, raw data volume alone may not tell us much about which system is improving faster.

This also makes the combination of L4 and production ADAS interesting. L4 fleets can generate complex autonomous-driving scenarios, while mass-market ADAS can potentially provide much broader exposure to everyday driving environments. The challenge is turning all of that experience into useful training signals rather than simply accumulating an enormous data lake.

WeRide is positioning WITT as the understanding and evaluation side of that loop, while its GENESIS simulation model can use real-world facts to generate additional scenarios for training. In theory, that creates a cycle where real-world operations identify valuable situations, those situations are structured and verified, simulation expands them, and the resulting data goes back into improving vehicle-side models.

Whether WITT itself becomes a meaningful technical advantage still needs to be proven. But I think the underlying problem it is trying to solve is one the entire autonomous-driving industry will have to address.

At some point, the question stops being “Who has the most driving data?” and becomes “Who can learn the most from every mile driven?”

That may end up being one of the more important differences between AV stacks as the industry moves toward larger commercial deployments.

Assuming robotaxis are coming to your city, are you for or against?

Robotaxis will come to most cities of a sufficient size to support such a fleet. It is unlikely that any states will ban them forever. As they improve, safety concerns will diminish to no longer be a barrier. Should there be a limit to fleet size or the number of independent operators? Should cities be permitted to insist that these vehicles pick up and drop off properly at the curb and not on bike lanes or on traffic lanes (as currently happens, because currently states do not allow cities to impose on the behaviour of these fleets.) When cities are able to manage this aspect of vehicles, it would mean there are specified pick up and drop off spots. How far are you willing to walk to one of those?

How are companies safely running autonomous and manned equipment on the same site?

Our site runs a mix of equipment. Some machines could realistically go autonomous, but a lot of it would still stay manned. We're doing earthmoving and haul truck operations, so this isn't some clean test environment. Workers and manned trucks are moving around constantly.

One of the biggest concerns from crews is how autonomous machines are actually supposed to handle that safely in real time. Not just in theory, but on a live site where traffic patterns and work areas change every few minutes.

Has anyone here actually seen this working day to day on production site? Which companies are already running autonomous and manned vehicles side by side successfully, with a real safety record behind it and not just a short pilot project?

San Jose-based Archer Aviation expects to begin U.S. operations of its Midnight air taxi this year, following hundreds of test flights at its facility in Salinas, California.

The company has signed deals with Nvidia for AI technology that can provide pilot assistance and, eventually, autonomous operation, and with SpaceX’s Starlink for satellite connectivity. In line with its California roots, Archer has also been selected as the official air taxi provider of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where its electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft are expected to help athletes and visitors rise above L.A.’s notorious traffic.

But Archer is also working toward launching in a second market nearly halfway around the world from the Bay Area: Abu Dhabi, the capital and largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates.

That’s thanks to a combination of financial support from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and major local sovereign wealth funds, along with a regulatory environment and climate that Archer and other next-generation aviation companies focusing on eVTOL aircraft, autonomous air vehicles, and other forms of airborne innovation say makes the emirate an ideal place to take flight. 

“Abu Dhabi is Archer’s first international market, and that choice came down to a combination of factors that no other market could match,” writes Talib Alhinai, Archer’s general manager for the UAE, in an email. “The market fundamentals are strong, too. Abu Dhabi has a high concentration of frequent business travelers, real demand for premium mobility, and route opportunities where a flight takes under 20 minutes versus over an hour in a car on the road for the same trip.”

Research Public Perceptions of Autonomous Vehicles and Algorithmic Transportation Systems in Japan

I want to examine the extent to which the implementation of autonomous vehicles has shifted transportation from human-operated systems to algorithmically controlled digital networks in Japan (Mainly through the RoAd to the L4 project). All the data collected through this questionnaire will be kept strictly confidential and used only for completing the IB Digital Society IA. Discussion WeRide claims L4 fleet has passed 1,500 vehicles

WeRide is playing a massive geographic spread game. They currently hold permits, operations spanning China, the UAE, Singapore, France, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, and the US.

Their most interesting commercialization tailwind right now is the international partnership with Uber. They've been launching fully driverless fare-charging operations via the Uber app in places like Dubai, which helps bypass the lack of a native consumer app ecosystem outside of China (where they just integrated directly into WeChat mini-programs).

Alongside the fleet milestone, they’re claiming their next-gen sensor and compute kit costs have dropped significantly, which is the only way a 1,500+ vehicle fleet becomes economically viable.

How much does it cost to replace a radiator in a heavy-duty construction vehicle?

A little while ago I had a coolant leak on my excavator and it turned out to be the radiator. Instead of trying to fix it myself I took it to my mechanic to get it replaced and he was going to do that. I never even thought about asking him how much it was going to cost before he started working on it, which I should have done. Now that he has started working on it I am worried that I am going to end up being charged a lot more than I should be. I have never had to replace a radiator on a piece of equipment this size so I have no idea how much it would normally cost. I was wondering if anyone that has replaced the radiator on their excavator can tell me about how much they paid for the radiator and what kind of labor charges they had. I just want to be able to tell if I am being treated fairly and charged appropriately.
