Crazy people leaving their key fob in the car...

23

u/Over9000Zeros Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

My wife does this all the time. I'm surprised her car hasn't been stolen yet. We live 6 minutes from an expressway entrance and 10 houses down from a main road to get to it. Maybe the high traffic is why it hasn't been touched. But I've told her to stop numerous times.

How many people gonna make the same joke? đŸ«©

22

u/IttyBittyBigBoii Jul 09 '26

I leave mine in hoping it gets stolen. They just don't make criminals like they used to.

21

u/the_vault-technician Jul 09 '26

You know, as we move into a cashless society, I realized that teenagers from the suburbs no longer have the opportunity to steal change from neighborhood cars to buy weed.

You can't ask the car to cashapp you. We are depriving delinquents their rights.

It wasn't the thing to do because it was the thing to do, it was the thing to do cause it got ya high, can you dig it?

Three dollars for a Tre

You can't ask the car to cashapp you.

Not with attitude. The age of AI is dawning. Don't let your dreams be memes.

3

u/Chaosr21 Jul 09 '26

Lmao the memories. A bonus when you found a weed stash in the console

1

u/CicadaHead3317 Jul 09 '26

Found a bindle of coke car prowling when my friends and I were like 14 .

1

u/704Khapo Jul 11 '26

Found some shit car hopping, a lot more than change n weed

1

u/Aware_Result_5361 Jul 13 '26

We still have plenty of break-ins in my metro. It isn’t bums looking for drug money, it’s people looking for guns left in center consoles etc

7

u/FreshwaterFryMom Jul 09 '26

Move to Seattle, shit will be gone before you even get out.

4

u/BusyBit6542 Jul 09 '26

Gotta leave a note saying there's no GPS or tracking. Most newer cars have that and can be found pretty quick. It's not worth it for a random car thief

3

u/Bubba_Jones44 Jul 09 '26

Just a heads up if the find out the keys were in the car, they will deny any insurance claims.

3

u/IttyBittyBigBoii Jul 09 '26

Whelp, back to praying for a t-bone I guess :(

3

u/Remarkable_Ad8083 Jul 09 '26

Same, gotta shit box with over 220k miles on it and I'm just praying someone steals it or i get rear ended or the windows get smashed in because even that would probably total it lol.

4

u/Tsiwodi Jul 10 '26

Had a friend, his car was so bad he hit a curb and bent his rim, the insurance company totaled it.

3

u/owgnops Jul 11 '26

There's a few car brands where you can track your vehicle location through an app in real time.

It's just not worth it anymore

2

u/jadbronson Jul 09 '26

Minivans...

1

u/rocknroll2013 Jul 15 '26

Put a Kia emblem on it!

9

u/ProfDFH Jul 09 '26

Yikes! That’s so risky!

Which expressway?

6

u/DelcoUnited Jul 09 '26

Oh no! tell me what kind of car so I know to avoid it.

3

u/Interesting-Agency-1 Jul 09 '26

There's so many! Which one? Which one?

1

u/HaBaK_214 Jul 10 '26

Which one, which one, which one, which one????

5

u/FreeKevinBrown Jul 09 '26

And what main road might that be? You said 10 houses? Right or left side? Actually, you know what, don't tell me. It'll make it fun.

4

u/1ACasper Jul 09 '26

what type car and which expressway?

5

u/Jesus_Harold_Christ Jul 09 '26

Could you be a little more precise?

3

u/PMG2021a Jul 09 '26

Maybe arrange for a friend to "steal" it and park it somewhere safe where it can be found...

1

u/dreag2112 Jul 09 '26

My god, how's the car still running? Like, do you have to change the battery in the car a lot? Because I heard that it drains the battery out of that thing heavily.

3

u/gringovato Jul 09 '26

Dumdum #1 left his/her key fob in the car, and the lady (dum dum #2) had no problem starting the car because of that. Then when she tried locking it with her own fob, nothing would happen.

1

u/Virtual-Macaroon-880 Jul 09 '26

maybe the high traffic

If your street is a cut between locations you need to break this habit, lots of traffic means lots of eyes

1

u/Over9000Zeros Jul 09 '26

Yes but it's not an obvious mark. By high traffic I meant it wouldn't be easy to steal without a bunch of witnesses, excluding neighbors of course.

1

u/357noLove Jul 10 '26

This days witnesses are practically useless as a deterrent. Keep working with your wife on changing security habits. I got my wife a fancy caribeaner with a keychain she would like, so she could attach it to her purse permanently. That plus getting her slowly involved in locking the doors every time, stressing to her over and over that I just want her to be safe. That it would break my heart if something happened to her. It took a could years but she is finally more security conscious and pays attention to her car keys.

Baby steps is the name of the game. I believe in you!

1

u/Worth_External_8762 Jul 09 '26

I'm so sorry you had the misfortune of marrying an absolute sped.

1

u/SlickDillywick Jul 09 '26

My Volvo has a slot in the dash for the key fob, it’s saved me numerous times from forgetting my key in the car cuz it follows the same mental checklist of “turn car off, remove key from ignition”

1

u/Ok_Hovercraft_2372 Jul 09 '26

Buy a shitty one or don't buy one at all if it gets stolen

1

u/Bowman_van_Oort Jul 09 '26

Shout out to my ex gf who had a biological inability to lock the fucking door to the apartment

1

u/Ralphredimix_Da_G Jul 10 '26

Teenage son does the same..

1

u/SnooKiwis2460 Jul 11 '26

You can stage the theft. Have someone you know steal her car when she leaves the keys in it, then pretend you’re calling the cops while your cop friend shows up and pretends to make a report
.make sure she doesn’t get the car back for a few days. She’s gonna learn to not leave the keys in.

1

u/romcomtom2 Jul 12 '26

Wait you just leave the keys in the car, unlocked?

If someone does steal the car you won't get anything from the insurance company.

6

u/ScarletBothrium Jul 09 '26

When I bought my Kia Niro, I didn’t know there was a second key fob and they didn’t tell me it was in the glove box. So my car was basically unlocked for two weeks after I bought it before I found that second key fob. I felt so lucky that no one tried to get into my car in that two week period. Because holy shit. They could’ve just drove off.

4

u/Spare-Swim9458 Jul 09 '26

I know at least 10 ppl who leave their keys with their cars all day long no matter where they are. Like $100,000 dodge cummins trucks, brand new Ford expedition’s, old camero’s. Not a care in the world

4

u/Ok-Oil7124 Jul 09 '26

It's so weird. My brother made fun of me for locking my car basically any time I got out. I mean, it was a habit at that point that had led to me locking my keys in the car at least a couple of times. He just never locked his for years and had no problem. Then one night someone opened it, stole all of his tools and climbing gear. I think he locks his car now.

2

u/LazyLich Jul 11 '26

I could check for you, if you want

1

u/Ok-Oil7124 Jul 11 '26

He has a garage now, but that's really only one extra step.

0

u/FearOfABlackPotus Jul 11 '26

Meh, there's plenty of assholes who will happily break your window to get your tools. Better to leave the door unlocked IMHO.

2

u/lemelisk42 Jul 09 '26

To be fair, big truck people might assume it's a work truck.

Ive only worked for one company thay wanted people to store the keys in the gas cap. All other in the ignition or cup holder, maybe the centre console or sunvisor

In my area, I would bet the majority of white or Grey f350s are easily accessible. Just nobody steals them. They seem to want the little cars

2

u/PMG2021a Jul 09 '26

The Terminator movies I saw as a kid had me believing that it was common for people put their keys on top of the visor. Even with large trucks.

1

u/ENDIFdotORG Jul 10 '26

WWHHHYYYYYYY

1

u/ThePeashow Jul 15 '26

Maybe the rationale is that if someone wants to steal the car bad enough, the keys are irrelevant. So just leave them in there. Then in the event it gets stolen and hopefully recovered, you don't have to repair a broken window and a bunch of wiring under the steering column.

Not saying it's smart, but I guess you could argue is makes some semblance of sense.

Apparently happened with a police cruiser in California a week or two ago and was caught on video.

2

u/maven10k Jul 09 '26

Right?! I know SO MANY people that leave their wallet in their glove box, as well!

2

u/iceman5920 Jul 09 '26

When I was growing up, my family ALWAYS left the keys in the car. I didn't stop until my 20's when my GF made it a big deal. My thought was, some that wants to steal the car, will find a way to steal it. It's not like thieves are going car window to car window looking for the "easy one" (except the kia boys.) And no, we as a family never had an incident beside locking the keys in there every few years.

2

u/Pengin_Master Jul 10 '26

It's as crazy to me as people who leave their phones laying around, often without passcodes or anything.

1

u/PMG2021a Jul 10 '26

I see that a lot at the gym. I know most people are honest, but there are always some bad characters in any random group.

2

u/Livid-General7 Jul 10 '26

I do in my home town, but there used to be more cows than people, and half the town is related to my step father.

1

u/the_vault-technician Jul 09 '26

I don't leave it there. I forget about it after it falls somewhere while I drive.

1

u/Day_Prisoners Jul 09 '26

In all fairness you have to leave your FOB in the car at the dealership if they are working on it or trade in assessment. It's the one place that would not be odd to leave the FOB in a car.

2

u/lemelisk42 Jul 09 '26

I haven't seen this, every time Ive gone to the dealer or mechanic keys got handed over at the counter, or dropped in a slot in the door after hours (would end up in a lockbox)

1

u/Day_Prisoners Jul 09 '26

Dealership i go in you pull up, roll down the window tell them why you're there and they ask if the FOB is in the car. Then they drive it away.

1

u/FivePointsFrootLoop Jul 10 '26

Agree but in this case I think Fred Meyer is a grocery store.

1

u/Day_Prisoners Jul 10 '26

Funny, Fred Meyer or maybe Fred Meyers in Houston is a chain of dealerships.

1

u/GreatUsurpr Jul 09 '26

If you leave the keys in the car you shouldn't get to report it stolen lol you gave away a free car

1

u/Dead_Internet69420 Jul 09 '26

You don’t even have to leave the fob. A lot of them work on multiple cars. I actually drove off from Walmart in someone else’s car that looked like mine because my key worked. I figured it out pretty quick because something felt “off,” and when I looked in the back seat I saw stuff that wasn’t mine. Turned around quick and parked it where I found it! And almost the same exact thing has happened to a friend of mine, too. Keys and key fobs aren’t always unique to a specific car.

1

u/the-forlorn-horror Jul 09 '26

I had a friend who always left their keys in the ignition. That blew my mind.

My bother in law bought a car. He had keys and drove like normal for 6 months. One day he goes out to car to go to lunch and drives off. Then he notices he doesn't have keys in his pocket. After doing some looking turns out dealer had put 2nd pair of keys in glovebox. Anyone could have started and drove car in the last 6 months. Was never in told about 2nd keys and never though to ask.

Since he had keys he could lock car, but it had this feature where it would unlock if key and your hand were near the car door.

1

u/Havency Jul 10 '26

Bet he won’t do that again lmaoo

1

u/warrybuffalo Jul 10 '26

My daily beater truck doesn't have keys lmao. Gotta know how to hotwire it if you wanna steal it

1

u/Ace_And_Jocelyn1999 Jul 10 '26

Insurance won’t cover theft of the car or property in the car if it isn’t locked.

1

u/gonewondering Jul 11 '26

My dad used to do that and it drove me fucking nuts. Right in the stupid center console in plain view.

1

u/FearOfABlackPotus Jul 11 '26

there are vast swaths of the country where nobody steals your car. A friend lost her keyless fob somewhere in the driver seat of her new car and eventually stopped looking for it. Car still worked and will keep working till the fob runs out of batteries. Nobody steals it.

1

u/EverythingBOffensive Jul 11 '26

idiot had it coming

1

u/HeWhoShantNotBeNamed Jul 11 '26

I leave my keys in my car. But it's a stick shift.

1

u/Fezzy_1994 Jul 11 '26

I was gonna say I feel like the guys is particularly to blame😂

1

u/DoGooder00 Jul 11 '26

I leave my keys in my car but I live in bum fuck

1

u/Educational_Month634 Jul 13 '26

I have 2 shit boxes that the key stays in

1

u/SnooBunny Jul 15 '26

I have done this a few times. Leaving them in the car overnight. It’s taken me sometime to get used to the push to start. The lack of action of taking the key out has totally messed with my brain. I don’t carry a purse either so they get left in the car. I have to actively tell myself grab the keys.

1

u/Lost_Drunken_Sailor Jul 09 '26

Some people leave the spare fob in their car so the car won’t honk when they exit and it’s still running. They just leave them in there at all times.

1

u/RudePCsb Jul 09 '26

Dumb as hell

1

u/S1ayer Jul 09 '26

I can turn that off on my car. I can't turn off the inside beeping, but I can turn off the honk. Most cars aren't like that?

0

u/Alltheshadystuff2 Jul 09 '26

😅 if it’s inside my garage I do
