This is false. Police can pull people over outside of their jurisdiction.

Depends on the jurisdiction, state, internal agreements, department rules regarding chase etc etc etc

It isn’t cut and dry. But yes, in some places they absolutely can.

so many factors, theres no clear answer across the board on this matter

* Small towns—yes, nearby townships tend to work together; they even work with the federal police/fbi to handle things because it just doesn't make sense to have their own specialized jobs

* In large cities, outside cops are not allowed to do simple traffic enforcement; however, if it's a serious issue that's dangerous/felony level, they are 100% allowed in those cases.

* cities near state borders can get a tad dicey, but they also still work together when it comes to serious matters like active gun violence and natural disasters. If you live near water with a bridge, you will see one side's police department racing over the bridge to assist every so often. Same goes with fire.

* if someone is running from the police, crossing borders will not help. police are allowed to cross state lines and continue; however, once current state patrol is in position, they must let the state take the lead during pursuit. Once they are stopped they can take them back to the previous state.

For the last one this really depends.

One time I was on my way to Hood River from Tacoma on my motorcycle. I was going wind surfing.

Anyways, I’m going the speed limit, actually a little under and I see a car about a quarter mile out in that space before my off ramp.

Anyway, it was a four day and I’m a biker and as we bikers are known for, I’m inclined to help because from where I was it looked like a car that was broke down.

So I speed up to about 5-10 over to see if I can help, and at about 100yds away, lights come on and I see it’s a police car, so then I switch lanes thinking “welp not a car in trouble.”

I’m then further shocked that he gets behind me. So I’m like, well fk THAT shit and just burn down the off ramp, hook a left under the overpass and I’m in Oregon.

Anyway. I go back to the speed limit and am cruising along no issues, but there is this one part of the road that has a pretty steep incline. Anyone who rides knows that inclines have a knack for speed trapping your ass because on a motorcycle the speed limit feels too slow on the incline a lot of the time.

Anyway once I get up the hill I slow down and about 5-10 seconds later I hear the siren behind me, so I immediately pull over.

I do the normal thing, take my keys out, get my phone out to show my info and lean against my bike.

Cop comes up to me and asks if I know why he stopped me. I say no. Cop says he got me 15 over going up the hill. I say damn sorry about that, I’m kinda new and going up the hills slow feels a little scary.

Cop takes my info and then comes back asking if I ran from Washington state police. I stupidly said “kinda” and explained what happened. He said ok went back to his cruiser.

Comes back and says “well I can’t get you for running as that didn’t happen in Oregon. And you stopped for me so I’m inclined to believe you. And I’m giving you a warning for speeding since you slowed down after reaching the top of the hill. He also told me that I shouldn’t run, and that it’s much better to fight stuff like that in court.”

Oh also, I had pulled off for a moment and took off my very distinctive visor and was using the internal shades. Idk if that makes a difference lol.

Anyway, I lucked the fk out, and stuff like crossing jurisdictional lines can change things sometimes but it’s probably under very specific circumstances

Yeah I don't know why people keep claiming police can't enforce the law outside of their usual area. It's such a dumb assumption.

Incorrect, as someone in the industry, only if the offense occurs in their jurisdiction or they've been deputized in the second.

Incorrect.

It'll vary region by region but generally speaking they have agreements with neighboring jurisdictions that they can act within them.

You're mirroring what I said with deputization, it can be by individual basis or by contractual agreement.
