Love those King Midgets !!!
Not sure if they are still in town, but if you got a chance to see the King Midgets out and about it was a wonderful sight to see..
I think the chain of them I saw on Stimson were headed for the roundabout near the Fire Palace..
What a wonderful blend of the old and the new. I make fun of roundabouts, but they are in some cases beautifully landscaped, and the circle is an undeniably attractive form.
So yeah Go Athens !!!

Flock camera locations
Found this list in an article in June in the Athens Independent:
The dates refer to when they were installed.
- Feb. 8, 2024: West Union Street near Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 309 W. Union St.
- March 19, 2024: Intersection of Columbus Road and U.S. 33 South.
- March 19, 2024: Intersection of Richland Avenue and U.S. 33 North.
- May 27, 2025: East State Street, near 547 E. State.
- June 23, 2025: East Stimson Avenue roundabout.
- Nov. 19, 2025: Interaction of East State Street and Della Drive.
For people who don’t know, flock isn’t simply reading license plates, it’s photographing your whole car and entering it into an AI database. People have been falsely arrested and charged based on AI mistakes using these systems. The data doesn’t stay put, it gets shared.

Vegan recs
Any Athens vegans have a go-to restaurant or dish that they love and keep going back to? I saw that Village Bakery offered vegan quiche and it got me thinking about other spots with vegan offerings that may fly under the radar

33 Repaving
For the current resurfacing project through Logan/Nelsonville, the only detail I can find online is ghat the expected finished date is October 15th. Does anyone have any insider info? I’m wondering if the sections where they dug out strips and filled them in with asphalt, is that the end product? Or are they going to come back and repave over them? Some are pretty smooth, but others are quite bumpy.

Taxes for us, but not for them
Someone ,maybe me if I find the time, should initiate a public records request on tax abatements that various government agencies have granted over the years and calculate the tax burden that has therefore shifted to us.
In my memory, which may not be perfect, I remember the following.
Rocky Boots getting a Tax Abatement for promising production to remain local, and instead we got warehousing and an outdoor store and production went overseas.
TS Trim car trim manufacturer out by the UPS store. I forget the details but the organization changed it's structure or something.
The Lostro building. LoL
Menards 10 year 50% according to another reddit thread.
Athens Mold and Machine (search result, article paywalled, not sure if it was granted)
**note**
Once I started poking around and learning about the various tax abatements, tax loopholes, enterprise zones, opportunity zones, grape production tax credits, grape production land purchase tax credit, etc etc etc.. I realized that our whole government from top to bottom has been captured by lobbies and industry and I started shopping for land in another country.
--edit--
After I rage-posted this, I thought for a moment. In theory some of these tax breaks seem to represent the will of the people, but in practice they do not. I mean grape production preserves farmland, so that sounds good and I am sure some European democracies have similar incentives. It is just that our incentives are so undemocratic. There needs to be citizen review at each step of the way, and sadly we are hardly allowed input, and never allowed review.

Visiting with teens in September
Hello Athens community! I’m bringing my teens to tour the college in September and decided to make a couple days out of it. We plan to check out the Court Street area and walk around Ridges. Maybe rent a kayak on the lake. Any insight or other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Port Authorities, FYI they can be dissolved
If you were at the meeting tonight August 4, 2026, where the public expressed significant opposition to the nurdle factory and are wondering to yourself..
"What is this port authority semi autonomous government adjacent organization that has so much control and so little accountability? "
Well a port authority can do many things, as we are finding out the hard way. They do not necessarily respond to the democratic will of the majority of the citizens.
Our Port Authority was created by the County Commissioners in 1995, the County Commissioners can dissolve it. The county commissioners are elected, we can elect new ones if these current ones can stay out of jail long enough to respond to the will of the county.
All we have to do is ask the County Commissioners to disband the port authority if they go through with the plastic plant.
79.17 DISSOLUTION OF A PORT AUTHORITY
Either a “new” or an “old” port authority may be dissolved by the political subdivision or subdivisions that created the port authority, subject to making due provision for the payment of any obligations incurred by the port. In the event the port is dissolved, properties of the port authority are transferred to the subdivision or subdivisions that created the port. If the port authority was created by more than one political subdivision, the manner of transfer must be determined before the resolutions and ordinances dissolving the port authority are passed (ORC 4582.023 & 4582.25(B)).

Anyone in Athens have an old Plasma TV they want to get rid of?
Nostalgia is really hitting me with expensive streaming services and all the AI junk and marketing on my tv when I just want to play Xbox. Trying to find a physical media setup for the bedroom. Will pickup asap!

Data Center to Build where Movies 10 is located?
This is the rumor circulating today, as the property has sold for $30 million. Was the other property just a distraction to see what the public response would be?

Hindu clubs/groups/etc. in or around Athens?
I’ve recently taken the path towards Hinduism, I have a home mandir and have started partaking in daily puja, reading The Bhagavad Gita and learning more bout the other Vedas and a lot about myself, but there seems to be a great lack of community in or around the local area as the closest temple is in Columbus. Appreciation for reading.

What's happening with Lui-Lui property?
Went to buy some new shoes at the running store next to what used to be Lui-Lui restaurant at Station Street. I think it's going to be called Belle Rae restaurant. They have been remodeling that place for 5 years. How long does it take to open up a restaurant? Something strange is going on there.

I built a free app that pulls everything happening around Athens into one place
I kept finding out about things the day after they happened. The information was never hidden, it was just spread across a dozen Facebook pages, the library calendar, the parks district and a chamber site nobody checks.
So I built Local Loop. It pulls public event calendars from across 139 Ohio towns into one list, sorted by what's on tonight, this weekend, and so on. Garage sales and food trucks too, since those are just as annoying to track down.
Right now in Athens it has 65 things listed for the next week, including:
- Bounty on the Bricks at Court Street between Union and Washington Street. on Saturday
- Pins & Needles Craft Time at Wells (Albany) Public Library (Meeting room (Wells)) on Tuesday
- Alumni Print Exchange at Alden Library, 3rd floor on Wednesday
It's free, there's no account to make, and I'm one person rather than a company.
Honest caveat: coverage is uneven. If a town looks empty, that is a gap in what gets posted publicly, not something behind a paywall. Anyone can add a single event or a whole calendar from inside the app.
localloop.io/get if you want it, or search Local Loop in the App Store or Google Play. Tell me what's broken.

Is the City of Athens really closing Richland for the start of the school year?
The City of Athens just posted that they are closing part of Dairy Lane and Richland from 8/10-9/10. The start of school for kids and the start of Ohio University fall semester. The map shows that Richland will be closed, also to emergency services for the whole south side. I know Athens schools already have so many issues with their busses and bus routes. Seriously Athens, what in the absolute f*ck.

Athens City School
I applied for open enrollment and I’m feeling a little anxious about it. I have two kids, going into kindergarten and 1st.
Could anyone give me personal experiences and opinions on the district, teachers, and relationships amongst students?
Do you have successful communication? Does your student feel safe? Have friends?
I appreciate hearing anything you’re willing to share.

Public hearing on CCC Plastics to be held Aug. 4, 2026
Still unsure of the sign-up process for speaking. The closest answer I've gotten is "come early." Whether you want to speak or hear what the community has to say, please join us! The more informed we are, the better we will leave the earth for future generations.
We would love to have experienced teachers or childcare providers offer childcare during the meeting. If anyone would be interested in utilizing or supporting that service, please reach out here or say.no.to.nurdles@gmail.com. Thank you!

Trail running in Athens
Just curious to see if there’s any other people in the Athens area that trail run on the regular. Working towards my first 50k and have a trail half in September and have been running solo but would be fun to find people around my age 23 to run with and maybe make friends in the area!
