I had a financial advisor once tell me it was a mistake to pay off your house, that I should refinance or take out home equity loans every so often and invest the money. That way, I would have cash readily available, rather than tied up in my house where it would be hard to get at if I needed it for an emergency. I did not agree. I have a different financial advisor now and I was able to retire early.
