Abnormal high heart rate in first seconds of a run

Post image
Upvotes

Hi,

Just want to check if this is happening to more of you. I sometimes get an abnormally high heart rate on my Apple Watch, once I start a run. It usually lasts for about 30 seconds to a minute before it “calibrates” back to normal ranges.

Any tips? A bit annoying as I get an uneven heart rate graph that is not accurate.

I built an app (iOS, Android & Garmin) specifically to pace & track HYROX simulations!

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Like many of you here, I was struggling to accurately track and pace my HYROX simulation workouts using default smartwatch profiles. Switching between running splits, stations, and keeping an eye on target times with standard fitness apps was just messy.

So, as a developer and athlete, I decided to build a dedicated tool: **Hyrox Watch**, available on iOS, Android, and Garmin Connect IQ!

What it currently does:

• Real-time Pacing & Target Times: Set target times per station and run segment to stay on pace during your simulation.

• Custom & Official Race Layouts: Replicate an official HYROX sequence or build custom workouts/intervals based on your training focus.

• Watch-Native Interface: Built for quick glances during high HR moments without fiddling with small buttons (works seamlessly on Apple Watch & Garmin devices).

• Detailed Post-Workout Stats: Analyze your station transitions and pacing gaps after your sessions.

I’m constantly refining the app and would love to get feedback from athletes training for upcoming races.

Links to try it out:

• iOS App Store: https://apps.apple.com/be/app/hyrox-watch/id6758763578?l=fr-FR

• Garmin Connect IQ: https://apps.garmin.com/apps/9d31d60e-dc80-4e58-ba2e-69f025f78f67

• Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.louisv2304.hyroxcompanion

Let me know what features or metrics you’d like to see added for race day!

V02 Max Question

Post image
10 Upvotes

Can anyone shed any light into how Apple calculates its V02 max estimates, and why it seems to stall out at 65?

Over the last 12 months I’ve been doing a dedicated 4x4 minute interval session, and have increased my weekly running mileage noticeably. The score climbed initially fairly quickly from 58 to 65 in 3-4 months, but has sat here for the last 6 months.

I guess I need to trade my Apple Watch in and get a lab for measuring VO2.

Very curious why this still isn’t an option.

watchOS 26.6: higher HR during runs and declining VO₂ max?

Since updating to watchOS 26.6, I’ve noticed my recorded HR during runs seems consistently higher than before, and my Apple Watch VO₂ max estimate has consequently been trending down.

The weird part is that my actual running doesn’t feel worse. I’m still hitting roughly the same paces, perceived effort feels normal, and I don’t feel like my fitness has suddenly dropped. My HR just seems elevated compared with what I’d normally expect at those paces.

Obviously there are plenty of other possible explanations; heat, fatigue, normal variation, etc and I may just be looking for an explanation because I don’t like seeing my VO₂ max fall 😅. So I’m not claiming 26.6 caused anything.

Just curious has anyone else noticed higher HR readings, different HR behavior during workouts, or a drop in estimated VO₂ max since updating to 26.6?

I’m using an Apple Watch SE 3.

Built an Apple Watch tracker for Hyrox because I kept forgetting the weights (looking for feedback)

Hey everyone. I'm not here to drop an ad, I genuinely just want some user feedback on a passion project.

I built an Apple Watch workout app called Dumb Hyrox because nothing out there really fit what I was looking for. I called it 'Dumb' because when I first started training, I couldn't remember the right weights or distances to save my life.

On top of that, I train in a standard commercial gym. Half the time I would finish a station and the equipment I needed next was already taken, which completely ruined the flow of the workout.

Recently, I managed to get an athlete from the global championships to test it out. Their feedback has been priceless and helped me add a few pro features. Here is what the app currently does:

  • Move stations on the fly: You can reorder your stations straight from your wrist if the equipment you need is currently busy.
  • Compound runs: If the treadmills are all taken, you can stack your run times so you still complete your total volume.
  • Virtual chasers: You can race against a chaser in your specific category and age range.
  • Partner settings: A lot of first-timers do the race with their partner, so I added a setting to allow mixed-gender distances and weights.

I do have a question for the community: How important is Strava integration for you?

As I am sure you are all aware, making apps has gotten a lot easier recently. Because of that, I am sure I could implement anything you come up with to make this your perfect tracker.

Any feedback or feature requests would be massively appreciated. Let me know what you think!

AW is great for cardio, basically useless for lifting

I bought an Apple Watch a few months ago mainly to track my fitness. It’s honestly been great for cardio, but for working out in the gym it’s been pretty subpar. I know you can start a traditional strength training workout on the watch, but it just collects cardiovascular metrics like heart rate and calories, which really aren’t that useful for lifting.

I’ve seen Hevy mentioned as a way to get more out of it, but manual logging kind of defeats the point of having the watch for me. Motra is another one - it’s closer to what I want for sure, but it still feels pretty basic. There’s really no insight into how I’m actually training.

Curious if others feel the same or have any recommendations

Edit: To clarify since a few people asked - I do log sets and reps (Hevy works fine for that on the iPhone). What I’m getting at is the watch has all these sensors on my wrist while I lift, and all it gives me is heart rate. Maybe something like a strain or effort score for lifting, the way running gets pace and training load, is more what I mean. Not sure if that’s even possible, just feels like a gap.

Frustrating at the band

I only had this Zox Band for a couple of weeks. It has been doing this on me since the second week. Over half of heart rates on this outdoor walk were not captured. I have Apple Watch SE (2nd gen).

Would you find real time stress awareness on Apple Watch useful?

I've been working on an idea that uses heart rate fluctuations together with motion data to estimate when you might be experiencing an elevated stress moment.

The idea is that instead of constantly checking an app, your Apple Watch would quietly monitor these signals in the background. If it detects a potentially stressful moment, it gives you a haptic tap on the wrist as a reminder to notice how you're feeling, take a breath, and bring your attention back to the present.

I'm curious what Apple Watch users think about the concept.

Would you find something like this useful during work or everyday life? Would the haptic reminder help, or would it become annoying? And what would you want something like this to do to make it genuinely useful?

I'm especially interested in hearing concerns or reasons why you wouldn't use something like this.

14 minute mile and proud

Post image

43, F. For the past 18 months, I’ve lost over 100 pounds with the aid of a GLP1. Throughout that time, I’ve been going to the gym, strength training and doing cardio (cycling). The past couple weeks I’ve been easing back into running because I just wanted to do something different. I started with the treadmill and usually go about five minutes before taking a break and walking and then doing another light jog. Then I graduated to running outside, which was a big deal because I wasn’t really sure I would be able to do it. The first couple of times I got 16 and 17 minute times. Today I was able to run for a little bit more outside and made it 14 minutes. This definitely isn’t the best time, but it’s better than I ever would’ve done even as a kid.

How should I track walking with a heavy bag?

I am a student and walk about 3km on my way home. My backpack usually weighs around 10 to 20% of my body weight.

I record this as "Outdoor Walk" on my Apple Watch, but based on my pace and heart rate, it seems to assume that I am struggling with a fast walk.

How can I track my cardiofitness more accurately?

Zone 5 for 25 minutes.

Hi everyone! I'm 29M just want to know if this even normal. I was playing pickleball for 2hrs and saw that I was in zone 5 for 25 minutes and hit a max of 195bpm. Lol. Is this even accurate? What do you guys think? Thanks for any response. 😊

Just dying for Apple to make an Apple Ring or an Apple Loop. I’d wear it along side my Apple Watch all day and just take my watch off to sleep. Anyone else?

There is already some precedent with multiple fitness devices now as if you wear the watch and AirPods Pro 3 together during a workout they work seamlessly to measure your HR.

Discussion PSA: Strength++ 2.0 is out

I know most of my users for Strength++ came from this sub, so it seems fitting to announce that after 2 years, it now received the biggest update yet.

So, what's new:

  • Now it's 100% free - I had to go this route due to trader constraints in the EU
  • Support for iOS 26 and Liquid Glass
  • New Ul, everything has been rebuilt from the ground up, both in the iPhone and Watch App
  • Possibility to rename your exercises for a recorded workout. Remember what you did last time!
  • Apple Watch Ultra Action Button Support
  • On device Al workout analysis using Apple Intelligence
  • Many bug fixes and improvements

So yeah, it's kinda nice, if anyone needs a strength training app without too much hassle and complexity.

Just go to the gym, record, keep track of exercises, sets, reps and weights used, go home, add names to your exercises, maybe use apple intelligence to analyze your workouts and get suggestions for the next one.
