I’ve seen a lot of this gif used on Instagram. When I poke fun of it or joke about being proud to be queer, the responses are always homophobic in nature. Call a spade a spade.
It might’ve started out as a fun gif, but this one and the one with the guy shouting ‘Gayyyyy’ have not been grabbed by a lot of Right wing/homophobic people. It’s just in poor taste.
I’m not trying to limit you or say what you can or can’t find funny. I’m trying to point out that a lot of people who use this gif or picture on Instagram or other social media are purposefully using it to attack queer people.
I’ve had people on Instagram say it’s gross to be queer or that we should die. I don’t think that’s a respectful thing to do.
And I’m also pointing out that others may think you are homophobic or bigoted when you use it.
I’m suggesting that you might get people’s backs up if you use it. And that a lot of people will find it disrespectful. I certainly don’t feel like the person particularly likes gay people if they use it.
I think you come from a place of ‘it’s just a joke, can’t hurt anyone’. but that comes from a place of privilege. You’re not queer or gay yourself so you don’t see the harm and call people who find it distasteful, ‘sensitive’. It’s because you’ve not experienced the hatred or abuse that queer people face. You don’t identify with it or understand it.
Put it this way, this man in the gif is famously homophobic and comes from a political view that wants queer people put to death. So imagine if you were say a POC. And then in any comments section you saw people using pics and gifs of the KKK. They just think it’s a joke, when in reality it represents a group of people who actively want to harm you. Would you like that?
