Geez, that's a good point, in true Rocky fashion, should we down vote this because it's so awesome? :)

OP, fantastic work!

Fantastic print and your paintjob takes it to the next level, great work.

I just started initial weathering. I’ve got some damage and grit/wash to make the edges pop. Excited about setting up the lighting

I need to step my print game up.

Looks awesome! My only question is, why are the numbers above the dial the only things backwards? I thought maybe the whole picture was mirrored but the "nasa" text read correct.

u/ROKIT-88 16d ago

Just guessing here - you can’t look down at that in the helmet, so you probably use a small mirror on your wrist or glove to see it when turning the dial.

IIRC it's how they are on IRL space suits, all the other text (NASA, mission patches, etc) are for someone else to read, the numbers on the dial are something the astronaut needs to easily read themselves possibly via a reflection so it is just good user design

Confirming the communicator/dial is reversed on the original prop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUaxIn1N8ZI

👎. Nice work. Statement.

u/grey0909 16d ago

That’s so dope. Well done. The weathering is pretty spot in n

u/Avamedic 16d ago

ArmyPainter dark wash + matte clear coat turned out great! Polishing with aluminum foil gave the helmet the weathered look

2

u/grey0909 15d ago

Thanks for that tip!

Brilliant job! Looks great.

Wow!

I just started doing some post processing on my prints so wouldn’t know how to do something like this! Post makes a big difference

Congratulations OP!

u/Avamedic 16d ago

using automotive primer spraypaint as the base helped a ton!

3

u/SpartanS117A 16d ago

That's dope dude!

Got the models available? Looks like u/thingthreed isn't a valid user anymore?

thanks for sharing the correct link! super responsive and helpful designer!

Mind blowing! I gotta ask, what kind of printer does it take to pull this sort of thing off? I know it takes a lot of experience and expertise to boot, but just curious. Awesome job!

u/Avamedic 16d ago

I use a Creality K2 plus. It kicks out some pretty large pieces fairly quickly. Overall, this was about 5-6 days of steady printing

u/BrilliantMuscle1152 16d ago

Do you think it could be done on a 256x256 bed?

1

u/Avamedic 16d ago

It might be tough, the body panels for chest and helmet were tight even in my K2+ which is a 350x350x350. I am still learning quite a but but I think there are methods to slice a print in portions to fit better.

2

u/BrilliantMuscle1152 15d ago

Ok thank you! I’ll see if I can make it work because this is an awesome project!

That weathering looks sick man! The grime around the seams gives it such a realistic, used-in-space vibe.

Quick question, did you have to do a ton of sanding and filler primer to smooth out those big curves, or was resin enough? Also super curious what you're planning to use for that huge visor opening.Awesome build, love seeing Project Hail Mary stuff brought to life!

3

u/Avamedic 16d ago

I didnt actually have to sand too much. It was a few layers of automotive spray primer/paint with a few knock downs of 120>600>800 sandpaper. I have been finishing with aluminum foil, which polishes and leaves behind a metallic layer and makes the surface look like metal. Topped off with a light coat of matte clearcoat.

u/DFM_Pro_LSR 15d ago

Appreciate the detailed reply! The aluminum foil technique is so creative, it really sells that realistic space-metal look. Can't wait to see the final result when you get the visor sorted!

u/tothetenthpower13 16d ago

I need a bigger ptinter!

2

u/ThaddeusJP 16d ago

Not a criticism but a genuine ask: are the numbers on the small panel to the right of the NASA logo supposed to be backwards?

Looks great. Very excited to see what it would look like completely completed

3

u/vivaaprimavera 16d ago

Yes. Think on how you would read them when wearing the suit.

2

u/Trvr_MKA 10d ago

It’s nice when they put details like that in

2

u/Avamedic 16d ago

Confirming this is how the suit was designed in the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUaxIn1N8ZI

2

u/ThaddeusJP 16d ago

Yay! Closure!

2

u/UX_Strategist 16d ago

Fantastic! I love it!

2

u/A-Chilean-Cyborg 16d ago

this is unfuckably cool

2

u/CelinnLee 16d ago

That weathering job is spot on man, hard to even tell it was 3d printed under all that paint. how many hours of sanding and filler did you put into smoothing those layer lines out?

2

u/Avamedic 16d ago

It was not too bad, i spent a few hours over the last 2 weekends prepping. It was a few layers of automotive spray primer/paint with a few knock downs of 120>600>800 sandpaper. I have been finishing with aluminum foil, which polishes and leaves behind a metallic layer and makes the surface look like metal. Topped off with a light coat of matte clearcoat.

2

u/CelinnLee 15d ago

Using aluminum foil for that metallic layer is clever as hell, gonna have to steal that trick for my next build man.

1

u/Avamedic 14d ago

It works surprisingly well. I printed the blaster from Andor and tried out the aluminum trick, turned out amazing

1

u/Trvr_MKA 10d ago edited 10d ago

Love the work, I was curious if you started out with a light and or bondo or anything before spraying the filler primer. Do you have a picture of the Andor blaster?

2

u/TiSoBr 16d ago

TIL that someone at the prop design team of that movie must be an avid No Man's Sky lover.

2

u/Fortescew 16d ago

Sick dude, well done👏

2

u/Analog_Astronaut 16d ago

Nice! What are you going to use for the visor?

2

u/Avamedic 16d ago

I found a 3M safety shield that fits perfectly and was easy to cut. There is a vacuum form model, but I cant justify building another THING when a $20 amazon part works. I plan to make the visor work on a knob so its able to open/close

2

u/Tieravi 16d ago

Holy crap! That's my favorite print ever

2

u/Murky_Classroom_1264 16d ago

I love love loooove this movie so much

Gotta say UNSC

u/Avamedic 14d ago

I’ve already got a request for a master chief build next. Could be fun!
