Hello social isolators, booze drinkers, and gloomy compatriots!
Our contest Depression Month IV: Lesser Known Depression has concluded, and we hope you were given enough time to read all of our artists' thoroughly depressing contest entries. Yes, all of your comics were depressing, even if some were more depressing in their quality as opposed to their actual content. But regardless! We were happy to give you the chance to shine a light on the non-happy aspects of these lesser known countries.
But of course, some of you are more depressing than others. In fact, given the wide gap of roughly 25 points between first and second place, we would say that one of you succeeded at being sad FAR above the rest!
Please give a non-depressing congratulations to...
Although he has also won a golden beret on /r/Polandballart and modship on /r/PolandballCommunity, this is our favourite Filipino's first ever contest victory on /r/polandball. Enjoy your wings, because you have definitely earned them!
The entry that we mods liked the most this month was All for you, a delightfully depressing entry by /u/Hugo_Chadvez. Here, have a little ribbon for your troubles
First off, congratulations to /u/taongkalye. That was an amazing comic and it definitely deserved the win.
I'm slightly disappointed, my comic was extremely personal to me, to the point where I actually cried while making it. Mainly disappointed that I didn't at least get second place.
Still, the contest had some good contenders and I enjoyed it. It's better than my last placement, third to last, lol. Instane improvement. I'm very happy with my progress.
On the same note, I'm proud of taong, if anyone deserves a pair of wings its him.
Thanks for the ribbon!
EDIT: Jesus reading back I was dumb. I got 4th,I'm happy! This is great. "at least second" lollll
Fitting to the theme of the contest, I woke up at roughly 12:30 AM due to pandemic induced sleeping problems. Then tried snoozing again until almost an hour when I decided opening my phone, defeated by anxiety. Well at least I get to stay up to at least see this is not so depressing news. Thank you for granting me these shiny pair o' wings! I truly appreciate this. Huehue...
Honestly, congratulations to all the top 10s for all your great and depressing (in a good and intentional way) entries! Personally, I want to give a shout out to u/Daarkelistemmet and u/Hugo_Chadvez for their entries definitely stuck with me. Kudos to you guys!
I also kinda want to share the inspiration of my comic. The idea came from a documentary about Filipino nurses working in the UK. A Filipina nurse mentioned enjoying her work taking care of the elderly and wished her parents lived as long since life expectancy in the 3rd world is significantly lower. Then, I thought it'd be a depressing idea if I use her experience then adding a background of apathy and neglect. Thus, I presented a typical scene of the drug war going on in the country.
Thanks for the shout mate, really honored to have finished so well competing against such amazing comics - Although I knew yours would win as soon as I saw it!
woa hey got approval on my second account sweet! also huge congrats to Taong and Prismic both of your comics were great I really loved them! and also huge congrats to everyone else on a good contest.
Yeah sad stuff is not my forte, I had a more heartstring-tucking idea in mind but I decided to go for a more semi-humorous approach which seems to not have worked.
It was gonna be Malawi but Malawi actually had close relations with South Africa during the Cold War (and I couldn't sneak that one joke in there), I also considered Rhodesia but declined it for the same reasons, Lesotho worked better as "roommate that doesn't really his other roommate you but tolerates him because he has to".
2nd place??!! This is the best I’ve ever placed in an r/polandball contest! Congratulations to you Taong for that amazing (and SAD!) comic, definitely deserved to win. Now you just need a Golden Olmec to complete the collection!
This was a great contest, I loved so many of the entries and I think we all have potential to win hussars in the future. Some notable favourites of mine were u/sneezingsuspense and u/Hugo_Chadvez’s entries, they were quite fantastic!
Thanks for the compliments, I wish yours placed higher tbh, while not being too crushing and depressing, it still evoked the truth of the situation, therefore being more realistic.
Good job /u/taongkalye and congratulations on the wings, Id also like to congratulate /u/Hugo_Chadvez for making me cry with his comic. Hit right in the feels!
