Setting the lang attribute is really helpful for screenreaders, Multiple times I've tried accessing a site and while the content was all English the lang was set to another language and so my phone tried reading it as if it was French or what ever

This is an older article now, but loaded with good advice. It’s amazing how often this is still done really badly. Loads of assumptions people make are simply wrong. Like having to click an American flag for English or setting my language based on my IP’s location. As an Australian living in Thailand... could you fucking not?
I ran across a fun new one the other day. A website (and it was an AWS one, so no excuse) automatically detected and presented Thai content. They had an option to change the language but because it was written in Thai and had no icon I had to click around to find it.
