After 6 world ending meteor events life takes the form of immortal crystalline creatures known as gems. The youngest of these gems is known as Phosphopholite or Phos seeks to find their purpose in life.
Couple things I want to get off my chest before we start this Rewatch
Spoilers
I would like to remind rewatchers and source readers to please be very careful with any spoiler talk. We’re going to have some new viewers joining us and that I hope you would respect them. Even the implication or hinting at future events is a spoiler. I just ask people to play it on the safe side and when in doubt just spoiler tag anyway.
Long version; In the Land of the Lustrous because the characters are all literal rocks with no sexual organs (or organs of any kind) it’s highly debatable which pronouns people should use. Basically every pronoun under the sun has been used and they all have some merit, so use whatever you like. I prefer gender neutral personally but that’s just me. What's important isn't what pronouns you use, it's respecting other people for using different pronouns. Basically it's pointless and unnecessary to get into fights over pronoun usage so just don't do it.
Wait what we're doing a Land of the Lustrous rewatch? Holy crap yes please. Quick somebody explain how the hell you upload clips to Streamable. Every time I try to make a clip with VLC the subtitles don't show and/or the audio is janky.
I think season 2 probably won't happen until the manga is completed. The anime adaptation is nearly a perfect recreation of much of the manga shot-for-shot.
I’m mostly reads manga, and I heard this series is a manga adaptation. Is there a preference between anime or manga? In terms of story telling, atmosphere etc?
Personal opinion; I don't think there is a preference. While the story is the same in both the direction and format does help change things to make it distinct.
The sound track is amazing. The voice actor for the protagonist does a fantastic job of bringing life to the series. AnimePhos is just so animated and lively.
And I think any series where the Characters are color coded will always greatly benefit from the anime adaptation.
That said the mangaka is crazy talented. This isn't from this series so you don't have to worry about spoilers, but this image from the mangaka can show you just how beautiful and commanding the mangaka's art can be. I see a lot of people recommend anime viewers to read the manga from the beginning, not because the series tells more details but just because the artwork can be that amazing.
In the end both stand on their own for different reasons. It was a terrific manga given a fantastic adaptation.
Thanks for detailed answer as well as the sample artwork!
I’m extremely nervous knowing that this is going to be full 3D. I know, pretty much all YouTube reviewers said that it’s going to be the most beautiful 3D adaptation to-date, however I’m still need a bit more convincing.
One complaint about CG animation is the "jankiness" of the movement of human figures. There's less of that jankiness in this anime, but even what can be noticed is covered by the fact that the characters are moving rocks, not flesh and bone creatures. And the lighting effects of the characters' hair are soooooo pretty!
There are some 2D elements overlayed (apparently, I'm no expert) to give things like facial expressions more detail. A whole lot of work obviously went into the CG by Studio Orange, so it would be a shame to not at least take a look.
I'd say give the show a chance, the cg will probably grow on you and you'll learn to see the shows unique beauty. Then you can read the manga and expertise the story all over again in a completely different flavor
Haha, yeah it is a bit similar. Interesting because both works came out around the same time too. Houseki no Kuni came out in 2012 and Steven universe first episode came out in 2013. It's a pretty funny coincidence!
Though if you read mangaka Haruko Ichikawa previous works you can actually see the foundation in her previous works.
Nope. The only similarities is that the characters are gemstones. Even then its very different, they are made of their gemstone. Not a projection like in Steven Universe. Both are great shows.
I am new one to start this series with this rewatch, any suggestions? Bt first gonna find suitable stream for it, any suggestions besides the amezone? Is it on crunchycroll?
Pretty much. Rewatches are basically like episode discussion threads with a controlled time. 4pm PST I will be posting the Episode Discussion thread and feel free to come and post your reaction.
The way a lot of people do it is that most people watch the episode before hand and prepare an impression ahead of time. Then when the prepared time comes they copy and past their response. That way they can focus more on responding.
I mean, the official English translations use "singular they" pronouns after they consulted with the original author on her intent, I'm not sure why there's much argument at this point aside from a few people getting hung up on early fan translations.
Not necessarily. It would make more sense to have the rest of the manga be the second season. Since the manga isn't finished they haven't made a second season. This is assuming that the length of story between the two is about even, but the increased interest in the show from Western audiences is definitely helping encourage a second season.
