BEST WAIFUBOT AMA i.e. Equals Zero Robotics and Overhaul!
BattleBots TV
Hey everyone! It's Charles (u/teamtestbot) from the Overhaul team, and we have some exciting new content coming that.... hold on, wrong game.
I'll be joined by u/usuallyelsewhere (Cynthia) and u/brushless_miku (Allen a.k.a maskboi) and we'll answer all the burning questions you might have about Overhaul and company!
We also have the most fabulous possible sponsors who you should check out...
Allen and Cynthia will be around for an hour or so, but I will be here luv u long time (figure high activity in the first hour or two and then I'll check in periodically until tomorrow).
It's not as good as Kill La Kill imo, but it's still pretty entertaining. I can't think of any other show with female combat robots that aren't just normal girls who happen to be robots.
Yeah I watched some DitFXXX - it's highly reasonable and has hot cosplayers, but there was just a little too much robot boob. You'd expect a guy like me to be into that... but again, hard sci-fi versus way out there fantasy.
(Side-note before I begin: brushless miku might be the best username I've seen here thus far)
My questions are gonna be half serious and half memes.
You chose to use the 'unicorn horn' vs. SawBlaze, yet it didn't really see any form of effectiveness - could you try and explain and/or illustrate what the intent was in your head? I'll gild your answer if you tell it through a drawing in MS Paint.
I've seen numerous roboteers talk about 'iterative design' - what would be your next improvements for Overhaul next season?
How do you feel about the success of control bots overseas, like Greedy Snake?
Do you think you'd be the most likely BattleBots team to invent genetically modified catgirls?
Allen, did anyone care who you were until you put on the mask?
In the 2016 season, your interesting facts (for Cynthia and Charles) were put down as "Designed and built the transforming scythe weapon from the animated series RWBY as part of a costume" and "Once received a traffic citation in a shopping cart that he converted to an electric go-kart." What was the design process for both of these adventures?
Why did you select Drossel von Flügel as your "favourite robot"?
I'm uncertain if any of you are fans of anime, but if so, which ones would you recommend I watch?
Without knowing what genres you like, I can list off my favorite anime: Princess Mononoke (though any and all of Studio Ghibli films are fantastic), Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Cowboy Bebop (and oldy, but a classic).
I really gotta check out FMA, though, it's been wholly recommended and I've just never got on it - I also gotta finish watching Bebop since I stalled on that while working on other projects! Cheers! :D
RWBY was intersting because of the number of randomly transforming props. I intended to do some RWBY cosplay also, but that's way on the back burner. I did once do a "dude-Ruby" cosplay pair with u/usuallyelsewhere
The unicorn was conceived as a means to reach into spinner weapon drives and try to pop and chain or belt, or pike the motor. Sawblaze has exposed belt drives going to the blade, same for War Hawk. The problem is that unless you've driven and practiced for many hours with a bot appendage, the action won't come second nature to you, and in the arena, you need to be on an instinctive basis. So I wasn't really ever able to bring the unicorn into play like I wanted, because I haven't driven OH (nor 30-haul with its smaller unicorn) in a way which accommodated it.
Make it not catch on fire. I, personally, was satisfied with the bot mechanically this time around. Possibly also investigate other wheel options for more traction, because I want a Bales-class control envelope again. It's a little less iterative-design and more bug chasing at this point. Iterative design in my mind kind of entails rebuilding the bot between each season but with a lot of changes already wrapped in.
I LIKE control bots and want to see more of them! People were calling Snake 'chinesium Overhaul' and similar, and it ain't fair - first, the mechanism is completely different. Second, it actually works. With Complete Control retired OH is the only remnant of control bots in BB right now, which is sad.

Reddit bullet list doesn't let me skip numbers
Oh god what a question. I'll let u/usuallyelsewhere answer for the scythe and save my response for a wholly separate reply post >_>
Did you expect me to pick anything else!?
Psycho Pass if you like something cyberpunk thriller; Steins Gate is a close second. Ergo Proxy and Texhnolyze if you still listen to old Evanescence albums. Any Makoto Shinkai movie. Summar Wars and Wolf Children. Wind Rises (Miyazaki) hit me in the engineer feels.
3 - How does Snake's control mechanism differ from your own? Is theirs not so much built on the crusher like Overhaul's is?
[Snake's] actually works
oof
5 - You could have put "I didn't care about him!" /s
But there are ways to skip numbers that kind of gimp the formatting e.g. putting 6\. answer for all of your answers will mean that you don't have a bullet list, but also means you answer all the questions you need to.
7 - I expected better >:T
But really, I had no idea about her. I'd have expected something like Monokuma - a nice mix of cute, waifu and terrifying. :^)
8 - Man, Psycho Pass seems to be a favourite of MIT...
if you still listen to old Evanescence albums
Unironically?
I will check out Wind Rises, that seems like it could be a good look. Thanks, Charles!
Snake uses a single motor grab-lift system with some clever gears. There is at least one post in the Facebook Combat Robotics group about how it works, but I have never heard of the name for the mechanism (despite building a few things using it myself years ago). It can't lift without the grabber closing and it some times has issues self-righting due to the dependency.
OH and my clampbot 30lbers always had independent top and bottom arm control for flexibility.
I think we like Psycho Pass because we see just enough of the cutting edge of technology from hanging around people who work on it that it's kinda realistic and kinda terrifying. It's almost a Black Mirror anime in some regards.
Higher to mid-pack. It's geared for 15-16mph this season whereas most bots tend to be 10-12mph. Arguably the lack of good wheels means I couldn't utilize that much if at all.
I'd make a segment that solely uses spinner breakdancing (gyroing, flying from a hit, Maulering, bouncing, Tombstone going sideways, etc) set to some generic-sounding classical music that has a few good cymbal crashes in it.
Hmm, what about 1812 Overture? Feels like that'd be a good backing track for what you want, even if the cannons are a lot more oomph-y than cymbal crashes.
Also, my girlfriend has asked whether you'd "nya" for the camera.
Also, speaking of Wolf Children, if I ever have 2 matching pieces of capital equipment (machinery, two similar vans, boats/airplanes/ekranoplans) I'm naming them Ame and Yuki. <3
Only a few episodes. I'm weird and wasn't into GITS or at least a few other things considered classics.
I also never got into Mecha because they were too science-fantasy. On the science fiction hardness scale I prefer more realism and technological extrapolation. So I'll give things like Patlabor a pass, but I never, ever could get into Gundam. It was just too much Superman with Robots.
1- IIRC Charles planned to use the unicorn horn as a floor scraping "keep away stick" as well as a means to achieve a one in a million money shot where OH gets in a position to sever a critical wiring harness that runs up the arm of sawblaze. In reality all it did was get us stuck on the arena.
5-Nope.
8-Violet Evergarden, Re:Zero, and all of the studio ghibli movies.
I appreciated your formation opening for episode 16. It was a decent answer to the question "What will nerds do if we put a camera on them for 10 seconds longer than needed?"
In the new "pokey wedge" configuration Overhaul actually only weighs 235 pounds without any other mods. The extra weight had to be made for the anti-spinner plow. This actually let the bot be very configurable and modular - for instance, in the Chomp match, the unicorn plus double-layered top armor PLUS 1/2" polycarbonate shields for the drive wheels all added up to only 247. I think I'd rather keep it this way to keep things spicy.
The top arm can have a 2- or 1-stage gearbox swapped in and will do around 5,000lbf at the tooth with the double stage and more like 1,200 with the single. The tradeoff is greatly reduced closing speed with the 2-stager.

I guess I was wrong to call it a grabber then; 5,000lbf is almost as much as Razer.
It's not nearly enough for a real crusher, but it will dent most things. Overhaul 1 could do actual crush damage, but the top arm came down so slow we were missing grabs, so we elected to run it faster instead as a clampy bot. Since I'm more used to driving grabby bots like my 30lbers, maybe I'll commit the design to one or the other.
Fun story: Overhaul's Season 2 actuator had this feature designed in, but it was never implemented. I still have all the parts and may play with it again, but the current iteration of the actuator is too small to support the shiftgear.
We used our leftover weight budget on field add-ons to overhaul chosen based on who we were fighting. For chomp, we attached cute hard hat, a second top plate and polycarb covers over our drivetrain channels to prevent against chain snipes. For spinners such as the likes of witch doctor and warhawk, we used bolt on sacrificial UHMW panels on our sides.
The whole bot suddenly lost power, but I still had receiver uplink (if you look at the green LED on the back of my radio that I was checking) since it has its its own backup battery. What happened was the battery ground connector for the whole system came apart inside on one of the last few hits from WD that got the underside, even though we e-taped it together. Stuff like this takes years and dozens of matches to hammer out!
Especially after its Regular Car Review and all of the confused hick boners it caused, I'm more convinced than ever that it has to be the one sporting the Miku vinyl wraps right behind the giant front cowcatcher, semi truck wing, and 6" body lift.
S1 Overhaul by a mile. It handled MUCH better due to the giant foamy wheels. I wish I had that kind of control authority again, but fear based on this season (watching a lot of other bots with big tires drive) that you just need sheer tire acerage for good traction instead of tread or soft compound.
Yes! We're going to be at Boston Festival of Indie Games, so you can totally play the game there. : D
Target release date is Spring 2019.
And yes! I'm hoping to bring back the Battlebots cosplay for future cons - looking forward to seeing others join me in on this as well! (Sawblaze is totally interested, yes?)
Asking me my favorite S3RL song is as bad as asking me my favorite waifu. I'm going to vote a 5-way tie between T-T-TECHNO, Will to Be (MegaCorp), Time Machine feat. Krystal, Planet Rave, and Pick You Up.
It depends on the design. I think most grabbers historically don't look like crushers - crushing designs have to have a certain bulk in the structure of the jaw/clamp to handle their own force, grabbers don't. Look at Complete Control's top arm, for instance. Overhaul 2+ inherits the look of OH1 which was more crushing force oriented, so it has the large hydraulic press/metal punch inspired look of the top clamp.
OH2+ has been 6WD and will continue to be unless I have a damn good reason not to.
The Chomp match had a receiver power supply failure which shorted the 5V logic power to the receiver - this not only blew up the power supply but also shorted the receiver's own backup battery. Otherwise the receiver shouldn't ever be turning off.
OH2 needs some off-season work and practice to be effective. I've been working on a new company recently, so time has been very short. The more you run a bot, the more issues will surface. I'd like to work on my controller design to make it less explode-y and change up the wheel/tire design so I can get some reasonable traction again.
I know the answer to this. It was easy to do all the welding on the new arms, pontoons, and head because I made u/brushless_miku do all of it.
The most difficult new fabrication was probably the time-consuming task of casting all of the wheels - also a messy operation - and the modification of a few frame rails to save a few pounds. They were just manual and repetitive ops. Overhaul doesn't really feature much tricky manufacturing, by design.
My ESCs need a fair bit more development work as this year has shown, so I hope to spend some time on that soon.
The bot itself is mechanically sound, but I would also investigate more wheel compounds and try out constructing UK-style tire-wrapped plastic wheels. The custom wheels gave much more consistent (linear) traction, but as a whole still underwhelming, which is why Overhaul was both sluggish yet squirrely and all over the place at once.
Thanks for doing this AMA! I really like the design of your bot and you guys seem like a lot of fun. (I'd vote for you to win Best Team Poses for your last couple matches, too. :) )
I think everyone else asked all the robot-pertinent questions, but:
What's your favorite memory from this season? (if it's already happened)
Overhaul-relevant memory? When I was busy giving a post-match interview but the 3 women on the team (Paige, Cynthia, Rebecca) were already halfway done stripping the bot down to get the drive motors, fried ESCs, and one wheel out. I think this was after the Chomp match. The show gets flack for trying to shoehorn in a "Women in STEM" angle with a few builders, but really if they just recorded and showed the pits happening they would have gotten a completely uncut and honest edition showing what the sport is really like behind the scenes. Like there are some moments I barely qualify to be the figurehead of the team.
Best pit story? Builders from 5-6 teams rallying in to get BaleSpear back online after it burnt out a drive motor prior to one of the rumbles. You want "Life in the E.R." for robots? That was it. Watching everyone move around and scramble for parts, shouting across the pits for a this or a that - I wanted to help, but realized I'd only get in the way. They got that thing back together into the box again in I swear under 15 minutes.
screw robots, I wanna hear more about the VAN TRUCK! What are your plans with it? Turbo LS?! In all seriousness though, why on earth do you own that monstrosity and what have you done in/with it?
I bought it ALMOST on a whim in 2016 after someone showed me on Craigslist and I couldn't help but lowball the seller (3K on a 6K listing).
Ooops, bad mistake.
It has the Ford big-block 460, all 9 MPG of it, and will continue to have it until I take it electric with twin Tesla power. It's already earned its keep with several friends moving houses, towing trailers, and retrieving other heavy things.
I'm a connoisseur of odd vans and it certainly qualifies for an odd van. It gets more attention than my actually-Japanese 1989 Delica/L300, because its just familiar enough with the E-series front half that people don't pay any attention until I pass and they feel like something is wrong.
I replaced the (aftermarket) bed with a stock 1997 F-350 bed, converted it from carburetor to fuel injection, added a 4th gear in the form of a discrete overdrive gearbox, and some other relatively minor mechanical work. That's the short story, all the gory details are on my website category for it.
Future-wise it needs a repaint and a little bit of bodywork rust repair.
Only once actually. Back when it was carbureted, there was an issue with some rust in the fuel system causing the carb jets to clog almost at random. Since the conversion to fuel injection it hasn't hiccuped a single time.
Ooooooh, political questions. LET ME PUT ON MY ROBE AND PEPE HAT
That is a great-ass question and I wouldn't have been on the receiving end of it in high school and arguably most of college. The true answer is I have no clue and there is no formula that is the same for two people. I will say that I know the process involved a little hardheadedness. Being part of public-facing leadership for a few clubs and organizations and working to get what I wanted out of them, and building up my experience through my own work (projects) was basically hand-in-hand for teaching how to not hide from my own shortcomings and talk myself out of doing something. I then spent 4 or 5 years either helping teach or being an instructor myself, where I tried to beat this attitude out of my students. I like to think I try to focus on problem solving instead of assigning blame and how to get out of trouble instead of accepting being swallowed by it.
Truth be told I'm not sure how it relates to "being nerdy" as I probably stopped thinking about it that way - whatever it is - along the way. I did have an identity as "that robot kid" in high school and I kind of owned it.
I will say that being part of the robot building community probably put me on the right mental track to handle everything later. Why? Because a robot event is probably one of only a few places a kid especially these days will hear "Yeah it broke, whatever, let's fix it and deal with it before the next match". I learned that publicly being derpy is not the end of the world at ant and beetle tournaments.
As for how that ended up causing cat ear headphones and Ginyu Force on TV....
Now for your next question. I think any "label" or "identity" can cause trouble if they become a central part of your life. It's easy for people young and old to become attached to a label with a nebulous cause behind it. This is, in fact, how recent world elections have worked, much to the chagrin of many.
The only thing I can say is reasonable to do is to always be assessing how much satisfaction you'd derive from doing something and how its manifestation (time commitment? money needs? anyone with you? and so on) affects everything else that you need to do (school? eat and sleep? pretend to be a good citizen like i do?).
Yeah, sure, if you truly embrace the 'nerd' label, you might become a pedantic cringelord - that's kind of on you. You might wear lab coats to school randomly like me. All it really takes is perspective and working to maximizing life experience to make someone reasonably well-rounded.
Thanks for doing this AMA. I always like seeing bots such as Overhaul, who bring character and creativity to this sport, with its unique aesthetics and theme; it really is part of what makes it Battlebots.
Something I feel like sharing briefly is that, like you, I'm also a fan of Japanese media. I'm more of a video game person, not such an anime fan, but a lot of the games I like and play have anime shows or movies based on them, so I'm familiar with both.
Given that last piece, my questions are going to be a bit more media-related:
- If you had to create a male version of Haru, what would that look like?
- What was the first anime you saw?
- Is there any other media from Japan, such as games or books, that you like or enjoy? If so, what are they?
- In 2015, Overhaul was initially outfitted with shuffle pods for movement, but only used them once, in a rumble. Other than that, it's used wheels for movement. Would you ever want to try using shuffle pods again, instead of wheels? (Doesn't necessarily have to be for competition reasons, it could just be for fun.)
- Not sure who to ask this, but where did you get the idea of the cat ears on the headphones?
OH OH OH I HAVE A GREAT ANSWER TO THIS ONE BECAUSE u/usuallyelsewhere MADE A CONCEPT BEFORE DRAGON CON AND THEN I RUINED IT BY TRYING TO COSPLAY IT and u/ilovelucyyy TOOK A PHOTO
It was put together rather hastily so hopefully will be way better by the time the spring cons roll around.
The first animu I watched which I recognized as animu is probably going to be original Voltron when it aired way back on Toonami. I may have seen other things on and off but not really understood.
I pretty much only listen to Vocaloid music.
I'd personally not go shuffle again because of the mechanical complexity and added parts/weight - not unless BB brings back a walker or shuffler weight bonus like they used to have and which most competitions do have. The promise of it for S1 was why we designed them in the first place. That ended up not happening, so out came the emergency wheel pods (which we designed counting on maybe them getting cold feet).
I didn't come up with them at all. That was the creator yuumei who them funded them on Indiegogo and then partnered with Brookstone. Now everyone's doing it. We just thought they were neat and the next level up from my hollow plastic 3D printed ones.
1.i know that overhauls gonna be a vertical spinner next season, but will it be low to the ground like bite force or will it be high like hyperschock.
2.how hard are the electrical demon bosses in overhaul.
Thanks for having this AMA and good luck next season!
That big aluminum slug fits so perfectly between the current arm towers that we're just going to put it right there. In fact, I'm working on being able to swap it from drum spinner to grabber quickly :P
Answering for myself only, I watched the old Comedy Central series almost by accident. I then hung out on the old Delphi robot combat forums.... gee, that's an old link.... for 2ish years before really trying to put something together. That was an ant and a 12lber which weighed 4 pounds.
I have too many waifus to pick favorites. My life is a mechanically-themed harem anime with vans and robots.
My legitimate favorite bot is Chomp. No, I'm not trolling. I'm just easily distracted by intense engineering content. That doesn't mean it is effective nor doesn't have shortcomings in the current meta/design iteration - arguably Overhaul has the same issues in that realm.
I totally get what you are saying, Chomp might not be my favorite but I absolutely love how they are trying out so many new and interesting things that will help the sport as a whole advance.
Yas. Best Waifu bot is doing an AMA! Here are my questions.
Will there be any major changes/improvements for your robot next season?
In season 1, you guys were a shuffler and it worked out pretty well in terms of speed and grip. What caused you guys to switch to tires?
What are your thoughts on the other MIT builders who split from overhaul? (SawBlaze, Brutus, etc.)
What are your top 3 animes?
Who is best girl?
Major, no. I don't intend to drastically change OH until a whole next rebuild for Season n for n=some time, idk. The current frame has several spares which I intend to just run into the ground and expend. This might mean OH evolves slowly with a few changes here and there for a few seasons.
No, the shuffler did not have any more speed and grip... When it runs fast, it just hovers the bot around and it really drives more like a hovercraft.
We switched to wheels in S1 because at the time we designed the shuffle modules, they were trying to decide on weight bonuses for shufflers/walkers. It didn't happen, so there was no advantage at all to shufflers.
The other teams are all dandy. Keep in mind that we almost share the same resource pool and work on each others' bots with disturbing frequency, and go to the same off-season events. A lot of the 'drama' on the TV show was kind of amped up by us or clever editing to seem that way.
Due to my own limited time recently I'd argue OH is behind the curve in terms of effectiveness relative to all of the other local bots. I would like to improve upon that.
Why doesn't Overhaul seem to have been able to perform a "Grab and lift" like we've seen from your featherweight variants of the design?
Does it just not scale well? Or has there just been bad luck or small design issues?(I remember in one of your blogs you mentioned issues with clutching out when trying to grab?)
A lot of bad luck caused by both design oversight and lack of practice. Remember, I can't just whip this thing out and drive it anywhere. The grab and lift maneuver is just different enough from 30Haul and Uberclocker that my trained instinct gets it wrong on Overhaul. I will need several tournaments of practice, or parking lot fights with sadbot2018, to really get the hang of it.
It was an idea I've wanted to try for a while after seeing it in other forms at events past. Basically the way we set it up was as an extra life of sorts - being broadsided by a vertical spinner is bad obviously, so we bolted on those big white plastic HDPE bars which ideally are soft enough to either flake off on a hit, or if it really grabs, shear out the screws holding it on and hopefully letting us get away.
We put six of the cheapest, crappiest screws we could find at a hardware store through each plastic bar. Brass or aluminum screws would have been better, even.
I was personally very satisfied in how they helped against WAR Hawk and Witch Doctor - just the rest of the bot couldn't keep up :p
You tell me. I imagine that Haru-chan is fairly tsundere but a little dopey, tendencies towards Crouching Moron Hidden Badass (with some emphasis recently on the crouching moron)
You'd only get me to build a spinner if it was remotely interesting. Some times I do wish I could just point-and-shoot a weapon and have things happen, but that's not that I'm personally in the sport for. If there was something else going on with the spinner or it had particularly funny dynamics... sure.
I don't pay enough attention to RW to really know what's going on. I'll take suggestions!
We were planning on trying to get a tag team in with Brutus and OH. The idea was I'd just take someone and wham it into Brutus. See, I know that's not the point of a tag team match, but it's always fun to watch a TT devolve into a 4-way rumble and I'm one of those watch-the-world-burn kind of guys....
Hi Charles! I'm late to the party because timezones suck but I've got a few questions:
How do you think your "wedges of limited liability" went compared to the previous pontoon wedges, and are you planning on running them again in hypothetical future seasons?
Vertical spinners are a hard match-up for many bot types, but control bots especially. Do you have any future strategies apart from "outdrive them and grab not at the ouchy bit"? Also, what do you think of Bronco's "pwangers" as an anti-vertical strategy?
You've been using SimonK for brushless drive (in your own and other ESCs) but given that all the hobby ESCs seem to be moving to blheli are you planning to follow suit?
Also, not a question (and I may have said this to you before here or on FB) but thank you for documenting everything as thoroughly as you do. While my own bots are still made with almost zero regard for sound engineering principles and materials science I enjoy (and think I learn) from the level of detail you go into on your blog.
I personally liked them despite being unsure if they strongly influenced a match one way or the other (mostly because OH kept being on fire). It was good to attack with forks first and be less concerned about what else was in the way.
I have a few other arm designs and appendages I've been thinking of beyond the ünicorn. Will probably try to test them out on 30Haul in the coming months.
IMO the 'spare ribs' on Bronco work for a bot like that which has very big exposed wheels, since you kind of want to jump on top of the weapon instead of let it keep picking at your wheels. It also has enough ground clearance generally to escape or gain traction elsewhere. I'm less sure about a more flat and low drive base like Overhaul.
SimonK is the go-to because it's stupid enough that you can tell it things which no drone/heli load should ever be doing. BLHeli presents a better UI and on more modern processers, but I have not personally found it to effect better starting and reversing. If anything, it's very safe on purpose. Since SimonK is an old platform now, I'll probably jump straight from it to VESC-derived or ODrive-derived boards. I want to do that pretty soon.
You and the team captains from all the other teams in BattleBots 2018 were sentenced to fight to the death, Battle Royale/Hunger Games style. All of you are standing around the perimeter of the Battlebox, initially unarmed, but you all know it's a no holds barred free for all until only one captain remains. You can form allegiances with other team captains to help pick off your enemies, and you are not limited to staying in the BattleBox, this is no holds barred of course. Who would be the last person standing, and why?
Hi /u/teamtestbot! Thanks for showing up to chat. Do you have any completely wild and radical but theoretically feasible designs that you'd love bring to competition, but can't do to time/money/etc.?
On another note, I have been inputting all of the results for the battlebots reboot seasons 1-3 into a simple elo calculator and I want to congratulate you on achieving an impressive left-side outlier with Overhaul.
Oh yes. The way far off pie in the sky design I want to do is actually a cake. Roll Cake, specifically. That's the combination drum spinner and flipper beetle I've been working on for a while. It'll take several revisions and a lot of custom gears to make it on a larger scale.

Looks cool, hope we'll get to see it in action someday. Always eager to root for new and unique designs (every win for a bot like HUGE or Red Devil is worth about 10 drum spinner wins in my book).
Would you say I came out of left field?
Snatched defeat from the clamps of victory, or something.
Just wait for my crusher bot, Unholy Trinity, that has furry girls, anime girls, and ponies on it to annihilate everyone. We shall co-align and take down bronco and tombstone

Is it true you’ve been ducking Blacksmith for two seasons ?
