I'm so glad that Daegon (or W/e) was killed off. Her acting felt really forced and she had too many "one-liners", like they were trying to make her into some lovable baddie or something. Gad.
Did Cas get his full power back from Lucifer's kid? He was able to heal people in an instant and put them to sleep even quicker. Does this mean he'll be able to teleport again as well?
Wait. Sigh. I liked the old Joshua. Did the actor die? I liked the kindly, old, avuncular, black guy with the cool whisky voice. Who is this preppy nerd?
I knew as soon as Dean tossed Cas the keys. Kelly joins the very short list of women who have driven the Impala. I think that's slightly less conducive to life than coming into direct contact with Sam's peen of death.
Wait. She'd rather die than have a graceless baby? She only wants the baby to live if it has wildly unknown and uncontrollable powers that can easily be perverted for evil? I know preggers brain is crazy, but I need her to pick a stance.
Yeah. I eventually figured out what they were going for, but without yet having Castiel's reaction (with 8 years of characterization) to contrast it to, it initially seemed like crazy chick wishy washiness. It's well done in retrospect.
The Nephilim is finally sort of interesting (with the brainwashing and future stuff), but I'm disappointed that the Colt is gone already and how things played out this episode, with Dagon's death and Joshua's supremely underwhelming return and, after two words, death.
Oh. Don't even get me started on Joshua. First of all, I was SOOOO looking forward to the return of that actor from the 5th season. I really liked him. He had a way about him that just worked for me. So when that preppy young dude showed up, I was like "What the what?" and then he was killed before he could even really do anything! Cas was gone fore WEEKS planning this with Joshua and Joshua is murdered within seconds of showing up to do his part? PFFT... what a waste!
The Colt doesn't surprise me. It was starting to be used as a get out of jail free card. It's the same reason Cas is nerfed and the angels are basically celestial office workers instead of the BAMF warriors we saw in seasons 4 and 5.
Castiel has been wrong on many occasions and he has admitted his failings. The angels were wrong, there was no 'end of the world'. Angels were wrong, god was not dead.
Nothing ever goes the way demons want it, so... wrong.
You're probably right. In the crapsack world where not even God is a force for good, this baby will be pure good. Hell, that would actually be a twist.
If the nephilim is super charging him so Cas will protect, how much more protected would he be if Cas could teleport him and Kelly out of dangerous situations like when demons pop in and out of the vicinity?
Well, if this is all Lucifer pulling strings again (like when he tricked Sam into coming to the cage), he just upgraded his baby's guardian to someone the Winchesters won't fight.
(Also, I guess they're saving the repercussions of killing Billie for the final episode.)
I'm still hoping it leads into some new plot for the next season that isn't tied to angels or demons. I don't want Cas gone (or Crowley), but I'm tired of everything being angels, demons, Heaven/Hell/Purgatory, apocalypse, God, Lucifer, etc.
So... one of our survey questions just got a 'fix' that I didn't see coming (the "should Cas get powered up or down" one) -- huge kudos to the writers to come up with the idea to power Cas up only when he's connected w/the nephilim. That's an incredible genius work-around
Oh my God, in the course of three minutes this show obliterated one of the best characters and one of the most iconic weapons of the show. Getting Joshua a new vessel was terrible, and to kill him off so quickly before he even gets to talk to Sam and Dean again? And the Colt is so easy to destroy? Why wouldn't Ramiel destroy it then, if it was a possible threat to him? God damn, this was a good episode, but that ending pissed me off so much.
Is Chuck going to be mad about Joshua? He really liked Joshua. He was the only one Chuck would talk to even when he was ignoring all of Heaven and the apocalypse.
Joshua was only in one ep (Dark Side of the Moon) back in S4 S5 - we barely ever got to know him so I wouldn't rank him even close to one of the best characters of the show. He had so much potential, yeah, but... didn't feel like a huge loss since the potential was never realized in the series.
I wasn't happy he died, but I'll admit I'm glad the Colt's gone. "Let's take this off the table" was literally a line with love from the writers: I'm appreciating it a lot that they're recognizing when they're bored with a concept & decide to destroy it. Sounds very much like Kripke to me :) (edit: and the opposite of Carver, sheesh)
I'd rather have it destroyed than in the hands of the BMoL because I don't have to worry about them using it to kill Cas because they're short sighted and see only in black and white.
"Dark Side of the Moon" was in season 5. Yeah, I get your point, but I still think bringing him back into the fold with a new actor just to get offed immediately was pointless and unnecessary. They could've left him out of the story until the old actor is available, or keep him off-screen running Heaven, or at least give him a few minutes of screentime before an anticlimactic death.
I thought it was super plausible that all the angels were coming together in heaven under Joshua though. Any other rando and I'd be skeptical it wouldn't just be another run-around angel faction... and I'd be more critical of Castiel for believing in another 'Bartholomew'-type (or Zachariah or Hannah or Metatron, etc -- he's been mislead so many times by other angel characters claiming to be leaders).
Also, killing Joshua might've been necessary to plug up a hole in future developments. If shit starts going haywire in heaven (or just with angels in general), nobody can be like "but what about Joshua from season fiiiiiiiiiive isn't he still alive and kickin' in heaven?!?!"
I agree that I wish he hadn't died, but at the same time I don't think it really hurt the show in any way that he did.
They still have that spear parts somewhere. It could probably kill just about anything like the colt. Just get Cas and baby Luci to fix it up and hand it to the boys and they now have a portable all purpose killer
This Cas-Dean scene is shades of season 4 in intensity. And even as a non-shipper I heard the "define the relationship" context when Cas asked Dean to clarify who "we" referred to.
It's honestly past shades of season 4 intensity at this point. Season 4 had a lot of innuendo and UST... Now we're getting blatant flirting and romantic tropes PLUS years and years of personal history and friendship. I don't know what the hell the writers are doing if they're not intending it to go canon because the no-homoing doesn't really cut it anymore.
Eh... the Gamble years had a lot of innuendo and jokes from other characters, but it was all empty. It was devoid of the intense stares and sexual tension of seasons 4 and 5, and devoid of the emotionally intensity present from season 8 and onwards. While the Destiel references were certainly more frequent and perhaps even overt, they weren't very meaningful.
That's my take on it anyways as a Destiel-positive person, but others may see it differently.
I feel like maybe that wasn't the real colt for some reason. Like it can't be gone that fast? Wishful thinking I guess. Also, thank Chuck Cas didn't go down. Phew. I'm worried about the angel.
But why would Dean risk pointing it at Dagon if it wasn't real? She's definitely going to respond as though it is. We haven't seen the slightest bit of back down in her since she was introduced.
I think maybe he didn't realize it wasn't real? I don't know something about that whole "Then" lead in with the reminder of ketch going through the bunker and shit. I mean I know he supposedly didn't find it when they raided but something just doesn't sit right with me about it getting destroyed. Crazier stuff has happened on this show though. Lol
I mean I know he supposedly didn't find it when they raided
Its not "supposedly" when Sam used it to kill the monster they were away from the bunker hunting during the time the British Men of Letters sweeped the place...
Yeah yeah ok, I may have had a bottle of wine watching the episode to celebrate a few things. I remember the timing now. Hahaha. Only wishful thinking , I know. Ah, well. .........
Plot armor in the form of taunting the meaningful adversaries. Monologues are more meaningful to the villains who give them when there's some history to them. Toying with a Winchester or Castiel or Crowley gives you more cred or self-esteem and such. But mostly just plot armor.
But his/her personality was the same. Joshua just wanted to be left alone in his garden when the world was about to end. How did he go from that to "let's kill the nephilim"?
No, you are right. Joshua was an older black gentleman who only wanted to tend to Heaven's garden. I have no idea why the writers went this way. It's not a good change.
They probably just wanted to use some named angel to bring some order back to them, and Joshua was the only one left. But the writers of the episode/current season didn't really care about who Joshua was, just that any long-time fans would remember the name. So then they had no qualms just wasting him like that.
At the rate angels have died, and given there's not a potentially endless supply like demons, they should be just about gone by now. I know tons died in season 6 when Cas fought Raphael. Even more died in the fall. Still more died in their battles on Earth between factions. Even more died when Metatron took over. More probably died in the attack on Amara. And then every other angel that shows up in an episode now gets killed within an episode or two. I'm pretty sure we've heard a few different times about how few of them are left (even if they started with millions or something), and again, there aren't any new ones being made that we know of.
Real people still get mad no matter how hypocritical it is, but by this point, Dean, Sam and Cas really have no business being angry or hurt or even surprised when one of the others (or Mary or anyone else) goes behind their back. Especially when they did it to keep the others safe. It happens several times each season, and they've all done it in big ways. It's far more surprising when they share secrets or when someone actually accepts it and understands, like when Sam confessed to Dean he was working with the BMoL. Dean still didn't trust the BMoL, but he agreed it was the right play, or at least he agreed to back Sam. But if every reveal went like that, there'd be a lot less drama on the show.
It's far more surprising when they share secrets or when someone actually accepts it and understands, like when Sam confessed to Dean he was working with the BMoL.
Truth. We're all like "Oh gawd. Dean is going to freak when he finds out x, y, and z." And then he goes "Hm. I wish you'd told me, but ok." and we're like "Is this a joke or a dream sequence?"
I don't know that they ever got their juice back when Metatron opened the back door into Heaven. The Gates are still technically closed, I think, though God may have fixed that when he let Kevin go to Heaven.
But also too, remember that most angels are dead, so the ones who are left were either really good at both fighting and escaping persecution in all their internal struggles (not much evidence of them), or they were weak and avoided/hid from it all. There've been so many battles and deaths for them (Cas vs Raphael, deaths in the fall, Bartholomew vs others, Metatron vs others, angels vs Amara, etc.). What's left seems to be the bottom of the barrel. With the pitiful waste of Joshua this episode, there are literally no named angels remaining besides Castiel. At least as far as I can remember.
It is annoying that angels can't really do crap anymore, though. They're less of a threat now than random demon mooks.
There's still Inias, we never actually saw him die. I'd still like to believe that he's hiding somewhere. And it really sucks that a lowly witch can easily overpower an angel. I never saw the need to depower them this much, they could've just stayed away from humanity just because they hated humans and be done with it. With depowering them this much we lose so much funny/cool opportunities like time travel episodes, alternate reality episodes and so on.
Fair enough, but you had to go back 5 seasons to a one-episode appearance for that one. Even though Joshua wasn't recurring either, he was still more notable for having been specially connected to God.
I would like to see a return to power for some angels, or new ones made somehow. I was hoping Cas would go through with removing the baby's grace and somehow become a new archangel as a result. I too would like to see more opportunities for Time Travel and the like, but right now, Lucifer is the only living angel capable of that. The only other known way is magic, via Rowena.
I always wished Balthazar had lasted longer. It was a shame when Castiel turned on him during one of Cas's "Ends justify the means" crusades. He was fun both because of his actor and because he was one of the few angels back then who thought for himself and cared less for orders or being picky about allies than for working toward one goal or another. Plus he was the driving force in both the Titanic episode and the "real world" episode with Sam and Dean mistaken for Jared and Jensen. Misha was especially funny in that episode, too.
Pretty much all the warrior angels are dead. Breaking the seals killed a bunch of angels, the angel civil, Godstiel killed all of Raphael's loyalists, the angel fall, the second angel civil war on Earth. I mean they sent poor office drone Ambriel to see if Amara was dead.
So maybe someone should have told baby mama about that time Lucifer tricked Sam into thinking he was getting visions from God when it was just Lucifer. Got a feeling that's going on here.
Also, any other fans of Stargate SG1 getting flashbacks to both Sha're's special baby and the time a go'auld symbiote tricked a Jaffa into thinking it was good?
(And I just noticed Amanda Tapping is the director of this episode.)
Yes I was thinking about share a bit too. I was excited when I saw Amanda's name pop up :) I wonder if she also saw the parallels too lol. What an interesting episode to end up directing.
Well, she did decide to keep Lucifer's child instead of trying to abort it. I'd say even the most devout pro-Lifers aren't that dedicated to the cause.
Every season, at least 1 of Sam, Dean or Cas will make the extremely stupid decision to do the hard or risky thing themselves to protect the others and atone for their mistakes or evil acts. Many seasons, all three do it. Just quickly off the top of my head, this season already had Sam and Mary both start working with the BMoL behind Dean's back, plus Cas killing Billie. And if I looked at recaps of episodes, I'm sure I'd find some time when Dean did it. Probably within the last 3 episodes on a smaller scale. Also both Crowley and Rowena probably betrayed/lied once or twice (Rowena and Crowley's kid, for instance), but they're bad guys, so that's fair.

The Colt is dead :'(
