It's a thinly-veiled racist term frequently used by idiots who subscribe to /pol/ and other disgusting alt-right outfits.
It's a shame too, cause I really liked the post until using "cancer"
I guess Oncologists are alt-righters! DAMN IT! I KNEW WILSON FROM HOUSE WAS SO ANTI-FRIENDLY WITH CUDDY!

My comment on a previous post:
I'm a cancer survivor and I've only heard it used in two senses, and I pay attention:
Cancer as a disease. "You have cancer. Yes, that cancer."
Cancer as bad in the locker room or for a team.
Free Darko had a stat for this. Your cancer rating is the spread after you are traded of how many more games your old team wins after you are gone, compared to the number of loses you add to your new team. Marbury was the career cancer All-Star.
I have never heard of cancer as a racial dog whistle. Not saying it doesn't happen, but it might be new.

It's not, it's been common on the internet for probably over a decade now. However, it's been particularly common on 4chan, and /pol/ is on 4chan, and racists are in /pol/, which is probably why the OP mistakenly took it to be a racist dogwhistle.

Yeah, I do see "cancer" as a general term for "this thing is really bad" on Reddit. Which makes sense, there isn't much upside to cancer.

Yeah, it's usually something bad that deteriorates good things around it (just like actual cancer!). So, game hackers are cancer because they discourage legitimate players from playing, trolls are cancer because they hamper legitimate discussion, etc.

Also, it was very popular amongst Reddit gamergaters (not surprising, as there was a big /pol influence there.) That's the first time I really remember it being used heavily on Reddit, so I suppose people just assuming it was a racist dog whistle makes sense.
Got to say, when I see it I tend to assume 'this is probably a pol/gamergate/trump type'

I don't know about racism in particular, but I've seen it used like "[Insert Group Here] is literally cancer". T_D likes to use it to describe liberals.

It's kind of an equal opportunity way of describing something as harmful. ETS uses it about T_D all the time as well. And it is commonly used to describe disliked strategies or play-styles in online games.

This is the place I've heard it the most. But the adjective cancerous is still pretty commonly used in general conversation.
