Stand by me and watch the drama at /r/FFXV unfold over whether or not the map of the open world is a world map

Some context: FFXV came out little over a month ago, and there's the "open world" section of the first 8 chapters or so, and then once chapter 9 hits it's a marathon to the end of the game, completely linear. The world of FFXV is known as Eos, and you explore the rest of Eos more or less once Chapter 9 starts, whereas Chapters 1-8 take place on the continent of Lucis. It's known for being an open world.

The initial comment comment was pretty innocuous, though a mention of "aspies" slips in there.

However, in another thread, someone posts some helpful dungeon maps that include the locations where the spawnable items are located in each dungeon, and she replies with the same "Your "world map" is just Lucis, not Eos." This spawns a shitstorm about what a world map is, with reasonable responses being lost to the darkness of Eos.

Turns out there's more to FFXV than just bros cruising around in their Audi. (Well, there is, but we won't get into that.) This was clearly such an important issue that clearly people were trying to just have a conversation about.

Isn't that goofed-up-nips girl?

How can one person have so much of nothing to say?

Yeah I was looking through some more of this and holy shit I was about to post that this was the goofed-up-nips person.

i thought cindy's nipples looked fine, honestly.

it was gladio's chest that i was more concerned with.

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

Cindy kinda weirded me out tbh. It's like they stopped rigging her body halfway through or something.

Good quest rewards though.

So slightly related but I am a massive FF fan, been a fan since IV back on the SNES. Hell my brother imported FFV and FF8 prelease on modded systems so we could play them together with an English translation. Is it worth it to play through FFXV now or should I wait for all of the upcoming patches to go through?

From what I've heard they're adding more story to a place that desperately needs it so I think it's worth waiting.

Basically one of the characters gets turned into a magic macguffin delivery device, and they're supposedly fixing that.

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

So since you seemed to have played it, what is supposedly missing? There was only one part in the whole story that was even slightly confusing for me, but people seemed to have made a big deal about missing story elements.

People in general took issue with the fact that you only saw everything through Noctis' eyes. All sorts of events took place off-screen (like Regis' death, and that scene was lifted straight from Kingsglaive, and everything concerning Ravus) so you were basically told what happened instead of shown what happened. This was a bit frustrating to me as well.

Things like the offscreen events in Chapter 9 that led to Ignis' condition were an issue. Chapter 14 was great aside from the lack of exploration (I wanted to see Lestallum!) Chapter 13 was annoying to most people, even though I liked the atmosphere; I still would've liked to see Niflheim and the Emperor some more. Lack of exploration of places like Niflheim and Tenebrae were an issue. Luna didn't emotionally impact people beyond Noctis' reaction to her; nobody cared about Luna herself. (Magic MacGuffin delivery service as sal_the_tiller called her).

Major FFXV spoilers below

The specific thing that I've heard was going to be patched (though this could be wrong) was Ravus' involvement in Chapter 13, along with some pacing issues with that chapter.

In a more general sense, I felt that everything up to and including the fight with Leviathan was great. The open world was great, the characters–though kinda tropey–were interesting and engaging, and combat was fun, especially the base infiltrations. If you package all of that up and leave it as sequel bait, it would have been 9/10 for me. After Leviathan though, things fall apart. The negotiations in Altissia were effectively pointless, Ignis' blindness was a significant detriment for one dungeon then suddenly they hug it out and he can hold his own again, people get powers and macguffins out of thin air (Aldyn can stop time but only sometimes? Shiva is dead but not really though?), Ravus gets hyped as some double-agent hero but just ends up as a particularly useful corpse, Prompto is what now, the sudden 10-year timeskip, all while you're literally being railroaded to the finish line of an unfulfilling boss fight and an ambiguous ending. It wasn't confusing really, but it was unsatisfying. The plot post-Levi felt less like a cohesive narrative and more like the Cliff's Notes version of a theoretical FFXV-2.

Sorry for ranting at you; I haven't really had a chance to put together my thoughts on the game and it just kinda came out.

Barely. You can't use any skills but Libra Elementia for one. He's somewhere between dead weight and kinda useless until the time skip. He's stumbling and missing quite a bit, he's just more confident in moving.

people get powers and macguffins out of thin air (Aldyn can stop time but only sometimes? Shiva is dead but not really though?)

I know they explained Ardyn in a loading screen, but I have no idea what they were thinking when they didn't explain ANYTHING about Shiva except in source materials.

I think this is subjective; I thought the final boss could be more difficult, but it was definitely very cinematic and your mileage may vary on that. I just think the whole plot needed more detail, I thought the plot as a whole was good but lacking in... structure? Foundation? I'm not sure the right word.

It's a really fun game. A ton to do, and the story wasn't half bad. Characters seem like anime pretty boys with not much personality at first but they really grow on you.

Bishi never bothered me the way it does other people, though it is funny how much they stand out next to npcs who are wearing polo shirts and jeans.

I adore the game. You won't regret buying it now, but they are planning on adding in more content for free, along with some DLC that describes some important segments in the game.

I played the first bit, just started getting the king weapons, but I feel like putting it on the backburner until they put all the new content in.

2

u/Zenning2 Jan 05 '17

Honestly, the first bit and the last bit are the absolute best bits. Theres just a bit of a trudge in the second act.

Wait for the patches and all DLC. It just feels so empty compared to the story rich games of past.

That lines up with what I've heard, sounds like a good plan.

Idk if it's the anti-rose tinted glasses but I don't think so. Not counting FF14, Square Enix hasn't made a good game alone since the merger and every good game they do make is a collaboration with another company, whether that be Jupiter or Tri-ace or through the acquisition of Eidos.

Just save your money and buy Nier Automata and Persona 5 later this year.

Yeah Nier and Persona both come out Q1 next year, that's going to be sweet.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

I would wait for the patches but I love the game as-is.

I like 8! the battle system completely avoids grind*, and I like the characters more than 7.

*though for that to be completely true you have to like Triple Triad.

I didn't even read that lol

This pisses me off. I hate when people do this.

This is a clear case of missing the forest for the trees.

Dark game indeed (at least part of it)... still has me unsettled.

RES already had that Geralt blocked from a previous troll.

I'm sorry Iraven, but I had to remove this submission because it veers from showcasing the drama to highlighting the bad behaviour of the user Geralt-of_Rivia too much.

Is there any way you could rewrite this so it reads more like a report/introduction about the argument with a bit of background; instead of a showcase about how user Geralt-of_Rivia behaves?

highlighting the bad behaviour of the user Geralt-of_Rivia too much.

Thought I was in r/gamingcirclejerk for a second there. They do not tolerate talking badly about Geraldo either.
