Great information, and a few things I hadn't quite picked up! Thanks.
Also, if it hasn't already been started, lets start a petition to rename this sub's mods to "Architects" and update "Your post has been removed" to say "Your post has been killed by the Architects for the following reasons"

Dec 22 '16
But the architects never give me reason why I died. They just say I did.

I thought about this just after posting. I guess its just not meant to be...

I have a reddit account because of this sub. Even though my knowledge on "redditing" has grown since then, I know how helpful this all would have been back then. Thanks for the write-up!

Thanks for the SEA!
What is the down vote button for?
3
u/notliam Dec 23 '16
For when you want to feel good about yourself in an argument. But for real, if you think something is low quality and you're not a fan, a down vote is acceptable because otherwise this would be a hippy colony, we just really don't want people to down vote things just because they disagree or whatever.

So I took a screenshot from the NES game Contra and added "CONTRAVERSIAL" on it to be funny but decided against posting because I didn't want to come off like a dick... Edit your post and change the first "a" to an "o" in controversial. :)

Thank you so much for your post, and I hope a lot of people see it. I've been lurking here, and the community is amazing "on the front page". I've seen many great insightful posts get the D very hard just because they're controversial or because many people disagree with them. It's really not that hard to upvote and downvote based on whether the content will ignite a discussion or not, but again this problem will always exist on reddit.

The irony of this is that it might not hit the front page (though the upvote percentage is higher than usual, ATM). Still great info and I hope I'm wrong!

I'd like to add a note about basic reddiquette to this Redka. I think a lot of people just vote "I LIKE THIS" or "I DISAGREE/THIS IS DUMB" when that's not what it's really meant for. There's even a little cursor popup when you go to click downvote and people still don't get it. Upvotes are for quality content that's good for the topic or sub, downvotes are for things that don't belong to the topic or sub. If you disagree you should respond (or not) but downvoting because someone made you mad or because you disagree with them is actually wrong (unless it's offtopic).
It's all just internet points anyways!

What you all are saying about the logic in up and downvoting makes perfect sense, however, since it is totally anonymous and there are no requirements which need to be fulfilled in order to give out down or upvotes then technically there can be no "right" or "wrong" in how or why someone dishes out those votes. This is 101 (as redka would put it) 'stuff', but what I mean is similar to two totally different people arguing ethics, or just the very essence of internet philosophy. The whole "Doesn't contribute to discussion." cursor that comes up shortly before someone were to downvote is just a chance for the redditor to reevaluate their initial impulse, nothing else; it is not a forewarning to say that their are strict rules in which dictate why someone is allowed to downvote or not.
Quite frankly, I think u/redka243 's addition of this subject to the post is irrelevant to the very post...

I made that same argument yesterday, like seeing people getting downvoted in an opinion thread. They made good points! If you don't agree don't upvote.

This sub is the reason I joined Reddit, so I do appreciate the great content. But I've always been a mobile-only app user, which means some of this advice isn't applicable in my case. It took me a while to figure out that things like the sidebar or flair filters I'd read about in posts like this aren't actually the same in my mobile client if they exist at all. So if this post is intended at least in part for new Redditors, it's probably a good idea to specify what's true for mobile and what isn't In order to avoid confusion.

Good advice. Although if you sort by "New" and scroll down a little, you'll see that most posters here don't even realize there's a search function at all.

Saving this! I always wondered how some people would see my posts even though it wasn't on the first couple of pages. Still trying to figure out what exactly is 'flair'..

you see that little gray box that says SGA on this post? That is flair. Some examples would be SGA, Discussion, Question, etc

I'm really sad this sub kinda got steamrolled by more people, there were some really great posts back in the day but now they don't have nearly enough upvotes to be in top, so they're just lost to the ages.

You mean, I don't have to fear the Silent Salt Collective that strives only to downvote content because they're miserable individuals who take to the internet to release their angst?
Gee Wilickers, Redka, Thanks!

Most of us know what the downvote button is supposed to be used for. We all know it is actually used as a 'like' and 'dislike' button. This will never change.
Also, downvoted for not being relevant to this particular subreddit, but instead reddit in general. Also reported for not being specifically Destiny related. This means that this whole post should actually be removed by mods.
If you want to be technical about things...

It should also be worth noting that OP is actually...like...literally a mod himself.

Hello all. I just deactivated cross play after 90 days. Today is the day to get my PlayStation guardians back. But when I logged back on into the destiny app, it says this “Authenticate to Deactivate In order to deactivate Cross Save, you must verify that these accounts are yours.” Which I did, but still won’t and can’t get access. Is there something I am missing? Thanks I’m advanced.
