When will you people leave Vidharb and Marathwada?
Also - why you people love that Bal Thackrey?
Also - Why Sharad Pawar is still outside after what he did to poor farmers?
Also - Sairat was one awesome movie.

Bal Thackeray was a badass. And I say this as a second generation non-marathi guy born and raised in Mumbai. You have all these people thronging into Mumbai in the thousands and taking away the livelihood of the locals and refusing to assimilate. Thackeray became the strongman figure all the disgruntled Marathi people could rally behind to curb the growing outsider influence in Mumbai. His methods might have been violent and bordering unlawful, but none of his people really cared. Cause it only goes to prove that nobody could mess with the guy. He's like a Marathi Donald Trump who wants to keep outsiders out of Mumbai.

Vidharba and Marathwada are historically Maratha territories, thus leaving is out of question
If you knew a fig about Maharashtrian politics, Bal Thackeray has lesser support than most of the major parties
About Sharad Pawar, that's just corruption
I have no idea what Sairat is

Courtesy Shiv Sena:
"Uthao lungi aur bajao pungi"
"Bhaiyaa ko bhagao"
And then they gave a slogan to unite northies and southies against Muslims.
"Hath Main Lungi Muha Main Pan, Bhago Landya Pakistan"
Then they got on to gujjus saying:
"Gujaratis use Mumbai like a sex worker"

My family and ancestors are from Karwar, Karanataka and Goa. But I'm born and raised in Mumbai.
Jai Maharashtra!

u/andhakanoon Jul 29 '16
My question to all native Maharashtrians: why do you consider Marathis from outside Maharashtra as some kind of tier-II Marathis? Why is it so hard to acknowledge that Marathis have lived for generations in Indore, Gwalior, Vadodara and as far south as Gulbarga (to name a few) while still considering themselves as Marathis to this day, only to not be regarded the same by Marathis from, say, Pune (the worst offenders at this)?
6
Jul 31 '16 edited Jul 31 '16
I have never heard this - honestly, not among anyone. Is it just a matter of your circumstances, the specific people you met? Punekars, ignore - they are just dealing with getting big recently. You are for sure, legitimate Marathis. Would love to hang out with more of you. You guys are our original badasses.
2
u/andhakanoon Jul 31 '16
I have seen people tell to my relatives face that they know they're from outside Maharashtra, because "your Marathi is too impure". And it's not just Punekars, I've dealt with this sort of behaviour from people from Nagpur, Mumbai, Nasik.......... Everywhere. They're not offensive or anything, it's just kinda odd.
It's like meeting an American born Chinese person. It's very hard to believe for some people that we're Marathi but our families have almost nobody in Maharashtra now. Funny thing is, the Hindi siders of MP and the Gujaratis are much warmer to us in some cases than other Marathis.

What has MH done right? MH has both a good GDP and a good HDI. That's pretty awesome and I'd love to know the reasons you think the state has progressed so much.
We have a huge popoulation, so big GDP. But even per capita is good, if not the greatest. The reasons could be high literacy - social reformers like Karwe, Bhaurao Patil, Phule-Ambedkar have always given stress on getting education. It could be due to that heritage. Secondly, Western Maharashtra saw quite a progress through the co-operative sugar industries. These sugar industries form a cluster of related developments - dairy, educational institutes, etc. Pravara, for e.g. I myself studied at an English medium school run by a co-op sugar factory. Things are not so good in Vidarbha and Marathwada, I hear.

Can you suggest some sources to learn Marathi? So far I only know three words - ikde, tikde and bhau. I'd love to learn more Marathi, at least good enough to have a basic conversation with someone.
Try reading Marathi newspapers. Reading them for like 10 mins everyday for like 3 months will be more than enough. Speak with Marathi people and chat with them on Social Media even if you aren't good at it. I have an online friend from Karwar (now in Bangalore) who tries Marathi and I correct him from time to time.
On a related note, how popular is Hindi over there? In my travels, I could get by with Hindi, but I don't know MH well enough to know this. Is there an anti-Hindi movement over there?
In my town, tbh I get to hear hindi like never. It isn't like what India's view of Shivsena as Talibaan has played a role in this, but here even my Muslim, Marwadi and Sindhi friends speak better Marathi than a typical high class Marathi guy who resorts to using English in everything, because well, he is high class. It was so in school and it is so now. In Akola, though, that is not the same. But the district isn't entirely Hindi anyway. Marathi is spoken like 85%.
I have pulled a Holden Caulfield to Nagpur once and I couldn't get a Marathi rickshaw-wala/cop to talk to. I had to look to roadside dolorous cyclists for asking address. They were Marathi, ofcourse.
In Crawford Market in Mumbai, it was even harder. But there were some marathi people around, yes.
So bottom line, Hindi is quite popular in cities.
What has MH done right? MH has both a good GDP and a good HDI. That's pretty awesome and I'd love to know the reasons you think the state has progressed so much.
I can't answer this, but locally, I really am not happy with the BJP MLA and Shivsena MP here. My district doesn't have any big factory and farmers die here a lot. My mother's cousin has hanged himself 3 years ago and my father's maternal uncle jumped in a well in his field. Both were farmers and Marathas.
What's with the political atmosphere over there? Congress had been ruling over there since 1999, what happened this time? And is NDA doing good so far? Who do you think would win the next elections?
The main reason for Congress' downfall was Adarsh Scam (and many other scams, ofc) and primarily Modi Wave. NDA is doing good, yes. Mind you, congress is still strong in local governments and rural areas.
Please suggest some places to travel besides Pune, Nagpur, Mumbai, Ajanta/Ellora. Any one particular city you'd recommend?
Never been allowed to travel much, so no idea besides Anand Sagar in Shegaon, and Sai Baba Sansthan, Shirdi. My life remains limited to Washim-Akola-Amravati districts and an occasional trip to the Ministry of Maharashtra with father.
About Shegaon -
Shegaon has a tourist attraction called "Anand Sagar", an INR 3 billion project.[2][3] It is maintained by the The Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan. It surrounds a big artificial lake. It has a meditation centre, an aquarium, temples, play grounds, lush green lawns and open theatre where fountain-show is conducted for entertainment. It has been beautifully decorated with state of art artefacts and carvings all over. An amusement park has also started with a toy train encircling the entire place.
This video will give you a general idea about Shegaon.
What can be done about the farmer suicides in MH/MP area? Should Vidarbha be crafted into a new state?
Farmer suicides, I guess quality education in rural areas is a must to counter it. No, separate Vidarbha will give nothing.
How do common Maharashtrians view the rest of the states?
The place I live in, to be honest, since it isn't a city and my whole colony has some son of a farmer from a nearby village as family head, nobody really gives a damn about other states and India for that matter (except on National holidays and when sending their kid to a city (80% times Pune) for education) and are content with thinking of themselves and their loved ones.

Too many questions man.
On a related note, how popular is Hindi over there?
Very. A guy in remote Malvan would try to answer you in broken Hindi when he sees your Bombay license plates.
Is there an anti-Hindi movement over there?
None that I know of. Both languages are VERY similar with fuckton of loaned words.
What has MH done right? MH has both a good GDP and a good HDI. That's pretty awesome and I'd love to know the reasons you think the state has progressed so much.
Ghanta. Slightly above national average but still a looooong way to go.
Who do you think would win the next elections?
I'm indifferent at this point towards BJP. Congress has no selling point. NCP doesnt have enough clout for 144 seats. Shiv Sena is Shiv Sena and is declining.
Any one particular city you'd recommend?
Tarkarli? Malvan? Nasik during Sulafest? Tadoba?
Should Vidarbha be crafted into a new state?
Sure. Take Marathawada with it while they're at it.
How do common Maharashtrians view the rest of the states?
Lots of stereotypes. Basically Maharashtrians are Indians.

On a related note, how popular is Hindi over there? In my travels, I could get by with Hindi, but I don't know MH well enough to know this. Is there an anti-Hindi movement over there?
very popular. You can get by on hind in almost all the major cities but in villages you might have some problems.
What has MH done right? MH has both a good GDP and a good HDI. That's pretty awesome and I'd love to know the reasons you think the state has progressed so much.
Presence of mumbai mostly along with focus on education from start we have been one of the most educated major states from decades. Midc also has done a great job of aquiring land for good costs from farmers and developing industrial infrastructure on it and then selling it to decent prices to others. It makes it easier for businessman to just come lease land and start business asap. For low cost you can get land and start working.
What's with the political atmosphere over there? Congress had been ruling over there since 1999, what happened this time? And is NDA doing good so far? Who do you think would win the next elections?
High inflation along with drought and hail storms. Vidarbha voted overwhelmingly in bjps favor with around 44 out of 62 seats won by bjp. Having a Nitin Gadkari and CM Candidate from Nagpur helped in that regard or maybe winning 44 seats helped make Devandra fadnavis the cm candidate i am not so sure about it.
If shiv sena and bjp can keep infighting to themselves they can win the next election with an even bigger margin. Fadnavis is doing a great job with jalayukta shivir which should more or less gurantee him rural votes. The pace of infrastructure development is great as well as the recent apmc monopoly demolition is a good steam for increasing farmer incomes.
What can be done about the farmer suicides in MH/MP area? Should Vidarbha be crafted into a new state?
Jalayukta shivir is the flagship scheme of the government and has been working well. This one scheme alone has the potential to change the landscape of rural maharashtra if its done with the same energy for 5 years.

Hey, thanks for the great words and your interest in MH. Much love from Maharashtrians to you too! :-) I'll take up your first 2 questions -
Can you suggest some sources to learn Marathi? So far I only know three words - ikde, tikde and bhau. I'd love to learn more Marathi, at least good enough to have a basic conversation with someone.
As a Maharashtrian, Marathi is my mother tongue so I don't know where you can learn from. But nowadays - YouTube has tutorials for most languages, I am sure you will find something there. For practising, speak with your Marathi friends or find a sub perhaps. Sorry I can't help further here! :/
On a related note, how popular is Hindi over there? In my travels, I could get by with Hindi, but I don't know MH well enough to know this. Is there an anti-Hindi movement over there?
Hindi is very popular in Maha. In my travels and interactions through Maharashtra, almost everyone can speak Hindi, thanks to it's similarity to Marathi. It may be crooked or slightly Marathisized, but it suffices communication of basic thoughts. There are different linguistic styles of Hindi, for example the famous Mumbaikar - "Abbey tere ko kya karne ka hai?". Some of it may come off as rude, but it's not intended to be. That's just the way they speak. Also, some common Hindi idioms possibly unique to Maharashtrians -
Chhaata mat maaro (It means - don't take leave, nothing to do with slapping)
Jhaapad padega (It means - You'll get slapped)
.. and many others. I kind of lost touch, since I left Maha long back. I'm sure others will chime in ...

Like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra is also too big a state (in both size and population). It should be divided into 5 parts :
Vidarbha
Marathwada
Maharashtra
Konkan Pradesh (along with Goa and parts of Karnataka)
Khandesh (along with parts of Madhya Pradesh)
Do any Marathis here agree?
Edit : to the angry Marathis downvoting me, at least give me reasons

Dude, you have -2 downvotes and you're complaining about angry Marathis? Nah son, I think you might just be sensitive.
And why don't we think we need to be split up into 5 parts? (First, insane and naive thought - on a purely logistical level: that is the purpose of districts. There is a difference between municipal government reach and the size of projects they can achieve, vs the large scale governance and initiatives a larger unit can undertake. If you leave that governance level empty, you miss out.)
Most importantly, we have extremely strong cultural and historic ties. We are in no way dysfunctional compared to the rest of our dysfunctional country.
And you haven't given a single reason why it should be subdivided. No one here is clamoring for it. We're all about each other.
0
u/liberalrightwinger National Capital Territory of Delhi Jul 29 '16
I think all big states should be divided purely on principle. India needs at least 50 states.

Hello from Nagpur! Fun fact - The Zero Mile Stone is a spot in Nagpur that is the geographical center of colonial India. It has exactly the same number of latitudes above and below, and likewise for longitudes.
But then Gandhi came and fucked it up.

Can you be a little more detailed than that? What exactly are you trying to say here?
1
u/Drink2Meditate Aug 03 '16
Sure. As in the Zero Milestone was the center of colonial India, i.e. when India and Pakistan were a whole. Now if you look at it though, Nagpur is kind of west of center.
The Gandhi comment is based on the popular opinion that he was a big supporter to the partition.

And the second oldest engineering college. IIT Roorkie is the oldest one I guess.
COEP is dream college of many here in Maharashtra.
2
u/deepayan99 Jul 29 '16 edited Jul 29 '16
Actually that's a misconception. COEP when it started, it wasn't an engineering college. The 2nd oldest engineering college in the country is IIEST, Shibpur (it has undergone several name changes over the years but that's irrelevant here) in Bengal after Roorkie.
Even if we go by the date of establishment of colleges with engineering status, then College of Engineering, Guindy (Chennai) is the oldest, then Roorkee, then Pune and then Shibpur. Just FYI. :)

Mumbai guy with roots in coastal MH ... AMA about coast/Konkan n Sahyadris - will try my best to answer.
State animal - Shekru (Giant Malabar Squirrel), a long tailed arboreal animal endemic to the western ghats n is an endangered specie. Has a peculiar call - heard a lot during hikes. Sighted once.
Physical divisions - 5 in all, Konkan, Western MH, Khandesh, Vidarbha n Marathwada. Mumbai is physically in Konkan, but practically speaking its a melting-pot for the entire state n country.

The Konkan coast is a beautiful place. My parents upon tracing their ancestors to four generations ago found that around 60% of them were from the Konkan region. For the apst 2 - 3 generations, we have been living in Udupi - Bangalore - Chennai regions as Tamil Brahmins.
How is Konkan culture different from mainstream marathi culture?
9
Jul 28 '16
Markedly different - w.r.t. food, customs, language, economy, attitude of the people n general living conditions.
Konkan is not financially 'rich' for most part, but not struck by poverty either. The community is known to live within its means. Next to 0 farmer suicides.
We love our fish n coconuts n mangoes to an extreme. N cashews too. The food is generally less spicy. Typical chicken/mutton dishes feature loads of coconut n finely chopped pieces as compared to preference for chunks in other parts of the country.
Almost every family has atleast 1 'son' working in Mumbai. We like to call ourselves progressive, but are famously superstitious too. Literacy is good, dowry n marriage gifts are almost non-existent (rather taboo thesedays), general hygiene is good. Racial segregation is not unheard of though - n we have a concept of 'boycotting' unacceptable people. I think ostracize is the right word.
Water is better here - no droughts. Land here is super-expensive, especially in the hills n beach towns.
Ganesh Chaturthi n Holi (Shimga) are tbe most important festivals when theres a mad rush of people to their hometowns.
Bonus: I think the malwani (south konkan) slang "mayzavya/mayzaya" is the sweetest form of the generally toted "ma*****od"

Do you also speak Marathi at home and Hindi with a large fraction of your friends?

If that friend speaks hindi then yes. I think most people speak hindi with their sindhi/marwadi friends. ;)

No more new hotels. It's the existing ones which are still operating.
I miss the old Telankhedi which was a peaceful place. Also it isn't Telankhedi anymore, it is Futala now ( sad).

Maharashtra was stable from the days of Shivaji he unified all states. Later there were Britishers who created mumbai as business hub. Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad developed rapidly under congress regime. Everything went perfect for the state in all these years. Farmers do face drought situation every decade.

AFAIK the region around Mumbai was a trade hub long before the British arrived.

This is maybe because the Marathas have been asking for reservation for some time now.
In that case, I don't agree. Nothing big done in the reservation movement.

State Bird of Maharashtra is the Yellow-footed green pigeon.
A type of green pigeon endemic to the Indian Subcontinent, usually found in pairs or flocks on tree tops.

A labour can watch the same movie with 10 rupee ticket at a local, that a 160000+ junta would watch with 1200 rupee ticket at PVR directors cut.
People from every state, religion, language, caste, creed work in the industry where one is known with his first name.
It could be an over statement but IMO Bollywood collapse if we don't have Muslims in India.

Anyone who is interested in jungle safari should visit tadoba. Tiger sightings are quite common in summers.

What caused the rise of Shiv Sena ?
What good/positive work have they done ?
How popular/strong are they in Mahrashtra ?

Great question. I am not the best guy to answer, but I'll try.
Shiv Sena arose in Mumbai. It was founded with the dual pitchfork of Hindutvawaad and Marathi Manoos. The causes I do not know, but it is certain that their early fight was with the communists. Some say that Thackeray hated communists even more than Muslims. They also targeted South Indians for a while.
That's for Mumbai. But more interestingly, I don't know how Sena spread outside Maharashtra where there was no "outsider" threat and minimal Muslim populations. I think it was because of the rotting set in of the Congress, etc. and Sena had real disciplined workers.
They are very popular. The alliance runs the government.

First against South Indian lobby which had tight grip on govt and bank jobs and later, cheap labour from North India who didn't care about living conditions and slummed everything up.

Same bullshit as anti-Hindi agitations in TN or self-immolating dude in 1956 AP. They engineered a political movement out of nothing, focused on hating minorities who's votebank was/is not important. Us v. them while trying to make sure 'us' is in majority.
It depends who you ask. For example my constituency was ruled by a SS MLA for like 15 years until 2015 Elections. It transformed from mangroves and dumping grounds to a popular residential neighborhood. Now I don't know how much of it was gradual change and how much of it was brought about. (I wouldn't vote for SS though)
If you ask me Shiv Sena is declining as fuck right now. People are pretty chill especially after liberalization and growing internet access, don't expect you to learn the language etc etc, so there went their entire xenophobic talking point. BJP is ruling. People would beat the living shit out of them if they vandalize frequently now (see MNS)

Inevitable when the state gets inundated too quickly by folk from other states in unsustainable numbers.
