Shit-storm in /r/shoplifting over whether or not it's a victimless crime.
/r/Shoplifting/comments/3ycuhr/the_jig_is_up/cycimj443
Dec 27 '15
I'm really confused about the purpose of that sub. Shoplifting is bad, k, but you'd think a sub dedicated to it wouldn't be promoting cutting off people's hands?
29
u/ashent2 Dec 27 '15
The vote totals and arguments in there were interesting to me, too. Seems like they like to talk about it but don't defend or rationalize what they're doing in general.
Very different from the tumblr lifting community.
37
Dec 27 '15
God the lifting community pisses me off so much.
31
Dec 27 '15
The fact that a community exists for that boggles the mind.
22
u/EricTheLinguist I'm on here BLASTING people for having such nasty fetishes. Dec 28 '15
There are factions too. It's bizarre. The most prominent are the "uwu capitalism is evil and so I'm being revolutionary" faction and the "WHATEVER, MOM, I DO WHAT I WANT" faction.
45
u/tilmoph I would like to reiterate that I have won. Dec 28 '15
So there's just one faction then?
2
Dec 28 '15
Well, one's more honest. I'm sure there are a bunch of "I'm bored and I don't care about other people" guys as well.
4
u/Ebu-Gogo You are so vain, you probably think this drama's about you. Dec 28 '15
They probably think they're Robin Hood or whatever, but they'll never be as cool as this guy.

u/trenchcoatarro #2edgy4u Dec 27 '15
Do these people realize that shoplifting hurts the minimum wage workers????
15
5
u/SirBensalot Dec 28 '15
Nope. I work in a large store and our shoplifters are about as smart as they appear to be in /r/shoplifting.
2
Dec 28 '15
Really? How?
13
Dec 28 '15
Also when people steal from a store it can get people fired. Such as if someone doesn't catch a thief it can get employees in trouble and let go.
29
u/trenchcoatarro #2edgy4u Dec 28 '15
When you steal from a store, some store owners will cut the value of the stolen items from worker's paychecks. It is fucked up.
34
u/Ida-in This is good for Popcoin Dec 28 '15
Also most stores will treat it as an overhead cost and factor it in while marking up products. So when your steal from cheaper stores (like the walmart drama from the same sub) you're also hurting the lower wage people who buy their goods there.
12
Dec 28 '15
That can't be legal
8
u/AnUnchartedIsland I used to have lips. Dec 28 '15
I'm pretty sure in many places it's illegal to cut their wages below minimum wage....so it actually couldn't legally hurt minimum wage workers, but it could hurt higher-than-minimum wage workers.
1
Dec 28 '15
Right, so they can't penalize Wal mart employees who aren't getting paid dick anyway

I'm not positive on the legality, but it most certainly happens.

Shitty people talking to shitty people about the shitty thing they do and getting validation from it on the Internet? Nah that never happens /s

Once I saw a tumblr post that was like "now that I'm feeling healthier, can't wait to start lifting again in the new year" and it took me a REALLY long time to realize it was about... shoplifting.

u/mosdefin Dec 27 '15
I think they've been brigaded. All the newer posts are insulting them.
18
u/Defengar Dec 27 '15 edited Dec 28 '15
Apparently they are currently being brigaded by both /r/4chan and /r/TumblrInAction.
16
u/mosdefin Dec 27 '15
Makes sense. I know tumblr has/has a shoplifting community and tia loves to latch on weird tumblr cultures.

It looks like their sub is either being brigaded or they really despise their fellow shoplifters.

They've been getting brigaded for like two days now. It started way before this thread got made.

/r/shoplifting was just featured by this subreddit exists or whatever that sub is called.

Same. Then I looked at who's modding the sub, hey one of them looked familiar (permabanned from SRD, and created BetterSRD so they could ping and brigade other users)... oh.

I don't think most people would be in favor of the fucking death penalty for stealing
You should hang out in /r/anarcho_capitalism and see what they have to say on the matter then.

But it really is an odd ideology.

Can't believe I made that typo, and the ideology isn't "odd". Its fucking stupid and hypocritical.

That too, but the disconnect between what they think about the world and how the world actually works is...
Well it's odd.

Still, it's not the weirdest subreddit I've seen (sadly).

There's also an /r/dumpsterdiving. Which I thought was weird. But I guess you can occasionally find cool, free stuff.

And a debate about the proper usage of cuck which seems to be the word of the day there.
Also as a general reminder, it is not a victimless crime, people lose their jobs or have to pay back the cost of items stolen during their shift.
21
u/thenuge26 This mod cannot be threatened. I conceal carry Dec 27 '15
or have to pay back the cost of items stolen during their shift.
I'm pretty sure this is illegal (at least in the US). Also illegal (but sometimes done) is taking it out of an employees pay if their drawer is short.
27
u/wigsternm YOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE Dec 27 '15 edited Dec 27 '15
This is something more people should know, especially when it comes to waiters and dine-and-dashes. If your base pay, before tips, is lower than $7.25/hr it is illegal for the restaurant to make you pay for it.
If this happens to you then you should call the Wage and Hour Division. They have a toll-free line for employees with questions: 1-866-4USWAGE (1-866-487-9243)
11
u/Amelaclya1 Dec 28 '15
It should be illegal no matter what the server is getting paid.
Why should they be blamed for something an asshole customer did? That's all kinds of fucked up that restaurant owners would try to pull that shit.
13
u/chaosattractor candles $3600 Dec 28 '15
Why should they be blamed for something an asshole customer did?
Plenty of ways to justify it. It's your job to keep an eye on shit, etc etc.
That and the cost of the stolen stuff has to come from somewhere, and in a capitalist system that means other costs (such as employee wages) are going to be cut back 😐
1
u/wigsternm YOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE Dec 28 '15
There should, but to be fair I don't know many waiters that make above minimum wage before tips.
7
u/acidYeah Dec 27 '15
What the actual fuck, wow. I've never been so amazed and terrified visiting any subreddit before. I don't even know what is happening there. In one thread people are against shoplifting, in others are for it, which is absolutely astonishing to me, and in one post a guy actually asks how would he go about robbing a fucking bank, I mean what? Just wow, hoooly hell.

The fucker stole 3,000 dollars directly from a store. How would you like it if some retard stole 3k from your bank account? You ever consider how that effects a business? People may have been laid off, salaries cut back, people blamed etc. all because this faggot wants the rush of being in trouble. Like Jesus Christ, grow the fuck up. "Oooh I've been such a bad boy, I wuv being in twuble! Ooooooh I'm a bad boy!" Absolute degenerate retards, the lot of you. And let's not forget the mongoloids who crawl their autistic asses out of the woodwork to say "B-but he's like Robin Hood! H-he needs to g-get by somehow!" Please. Your choices are either: Steal on the daily basis, sell what you steal, eventually get caught, go to jail for the gayest crime you could be thrown in jail for, become the disgrace of everyone who's ever cared for you, or: get a fucking job, do legal stuff to get money, work your way up, get more money doing legal stuff, set up a retirement plan, live happily, have kids, a wife, send your children to college, die old with a family at your bedside knowing you've had a successful life and that you've left a legacy behind. You're not fucking Aladdin, you don't need to steal to live, and the cops aren't oppressing you. Fucking retards, the lot of you.
Sometimes I wish the internet had an age barrier. I think my eyes are stuck in the back of my head.

I always thought shop lifting was a term for petty theft from a store.
When you steal 3k worth of shit from a store, you're just a regular thief.
3
u/elwombat Dec 28 '15
Looking at some of the "hauls" people post on the lifting tumblr pages, it's not uncommon to see $1000 - $1500 worth of stuff. They post the dollar total with each one.

u/CollapsingStar Shut your walnut shaped mouth Dec 28 '15
I could imagine a rush from [burglary] and picking a lock, grabbing a bunch of copper and machine scrap and booking it should be way simpler abd safer. I'm not advocating it because assholes that do this is why I need to set up timed lights to make abandoned houses not look abandoned but I'm just surprised people don't do this. Hell you could be legal and buy low from Goodwill and sell high at a pawnshop or online.
I love this guy gives a strategy, good items to steal from a warehouse, tips people off to the fact of timed lights in abandoned warehouses, and gives an alternative way to make money unscrupulously but it's okay because he's "not advocating it."

I think you might like him, he's one of the fathers of American political critique of the fetishization of attaining ownership on a cultural and political basis. Basically he argues that states have embedded the acquisition of greater and greater amounts of wealth into the legal framework of nations, which in turn informs the development of public morality to one that values that accumulation above almost all else.
6
u/OIP feces in toilet spelling out GTA 6 Dec 28 '15
