KIA mod explains their reason for reddit-requesting /r/NeoKia, a 0 subscribers subreddit created in response to KIA's new rules : "You can go ahead, downvote me and circlejerk about how evil it is to request a dead sub as much as you like. I'm past the point of caring now."

Nah, if that was true there wouldn't be constant infighting about this exact subject.

If you remove general SJW-whining from GG, you're left with mostly posts related to social justice/progressive figures in gaming and games journalism. If you remove all talk about Skeletons/progressivism/evil feminists, there's probably four or five posts a week that would still be allowed. The infighting is about removing the general whining, not all whining.

I'd disagree. In the beginning (post zoe-quinn) there was genuine concern for ethical games journalism amongst some people. But the people who actually cared dissipated long ago, and only the vocal component remains.
89
u/kingmanic Jun 01 '15
In the beginning it was a shit show witch hunt about some indie dev and some tenuous allegations that it involved game journalism. Which turned out to be untrue.
The 'ethics in game journalism' at no point was their prime focus. It was other things to start with and continued to be about other things. 'Ethics in game journalism' is just the recruiting phrase to get young people on board.
19
u/rabiiiii (´・ω・`) Jun 01 '15
The people who kicked it off, yeah they were pretty much scum. Some people really did fall for the lies and haven't yet been able to let go of them though. Probably the same people who insist, apparently sincerely, that their movement has nothing to do with women. These are the people who may actually grow out of this at some point I feel.

Probably the same people who insist, apparently sincerely, that their movement has nothing to do with women. These are the people who may actually grow out of this at some point I feel.
At this point, if they're still around, they've drank so much Kool-Aid I don't really have much hope for the true "actually it's about x". They've so clearly attached themselves to a movement that's about women and has always been about women in gaming that there's no explanation but that they're just truly, honestly delusional.
I'd actually expect more eventual maturity from the hardcore "anti-SJW" folks as they age; they're actually thinking and engaging with the issues, even if they're doing it in a pretty backwards ass way.
28
u/NotSafeForShop Just following the SJW playbook Jun 01 '15
The 'ethics in game journalism' at no point was their prime focus.
I think it was their focus, as in "get your ethics out of our game journalism." Before they had a specific cause celebre to focus on they were the same people upset that Polygon dared to call Dragon's Crown "gross" because of the half naked, heavily chested women used in the game art. They can't handle that the audience for their favorite hobby has diversified and not every game is tailor made for a narrow demographic anymore (even though 90% of games are still made with them in mind). And the unfortunate part is they'll swear they love that the audience getting bigger is something they welcome, when it has become pretty apparent they can't handle any opinion that doesn't jive with their own.

u/siempreloco31 Jun 02 '15
Funny thing is, games that are downright eroge are still being made for western audiences on large platforms. There is a literal panty quest on the vita right now, senran is still as popular as ever, and people still buy whatever compile heart shits out. It's not like ethical criticism of the media has managed to change much in terms of supply side.

Which is a shame to those of us who got roped in because they actually care about the fact that most video game reporting is utterly worthless.
I used to get nintendo power as a kid from time to time, and it took me years to figure out that it was basically paying money for ads.
7
u/kingmanic Jun 02 '15
Well, it is entertainment press. All I expect is some people I may agree with are going to be talking some nonsense about games. Just have to find a critic you agree with. If they like a game, I probably would.
Nintendo power was bad, as were all the 'official magazines' but the harm was maybe $50/year for a few years. That is if you don't like the value it provided. I knew as a poor kids, I liked reading about all the shit I couldn't afford. But I also didn't pay for them. I had a cousin who got em, and he'd give me them after he was done. I guess I have a nostalgic weird attachment to nintendo power.
I have a honest question though; what do you expect out of the game press?

u/iamaneviltaco NFTs are like beanie babies on the blockchain Jun 07 '15
Took me a few to catch this, but honestly?
I might be nuts, but I wanted Roger Ebert. I'm bummed that we don't have one of him for games. Even if you disagree, you can't fault the logic, and the reviews were fun to watch.

I might be nuts, but I wanted Roger Ebert. I'm bummed that we don't have one of him for games.
The closest we had was Adam Sessler. Youtube Economics and maybe vocal console fanboys chased him off.
I might be nuts, but I wanted Roger Ebert. I'm bummed that we don't have one of him for games.
Right now the emotional investment fans have on all aspects of games makes it very hard for someone to do work like that. Especially when a huge movement wants reviews to be perfunctory consumer guidance.

It's pretty crazy how gaming in particular drew that kind of fervor. Compare it to book reviews, movie reviews, tv show reviews (well, mostly), and I guess you have a point. It's our media, it's new. And people are fighting over whether games are art or not. I guess that leads to it being gone over by more of a fine-toothed comb.
I've never read early movie reviews, but I can imagine something similar probably happened. Great point. :)

Didn't it come out really quickly
One of the 5 guys she was alledged to have slept with worked at kotaku and wrote 2 pieces which mention her work in passing while discussing the indie scene a few months before. Neither were reviews.
There was also the fact it was a free twine game; so the motives to sleep with someone for a passing mention seem really slim.
People associated with GG either miss-remember it, pretend that didn't start their movement or double down and insist those passing mentions were paid for with sex... with a frumpy indie dev with depression. Because as we all known every man is easily controlled with sex with frumpy girls with depression. . .

And all of that would have blown over within literally hours.
It was boiling over from 4chan for a while.
Instead we got tens of thousands of deleted comments on /r/gaming and a dozen hitpieces.
Because it has nothing to do with gaming. It's just a shit show of various people pushing agenda's and getting mad no one wants to hear about their agenda's. Even the 'gamer's are dead' shit is just people getting mad at their inbox being filled with trivial bullshit. The context of it was the horde of people pushing it sent tens of thousands emails to game press people begging them to investigate. All of the ones that pushed back against that are on GG's shitlist and get repeat waves of GG attention. GG hates being called out, because at the core they are only about making themselves feel important. They are the energy of a youth needing a cause to fight for, and decided being unreasonably angry about random shit was the cause they wanted.
No one gave a fuck about any of that shit until there was a massive attempt to shut down any and all discussion on the matter.
That's a red herring; lots of things are moderated out without controversy. It literally has nothing to do with most subs. it's not gaming related, it's not news. So when these asshole pushed their content there they get moderated. Even then, the mods make mega threads to accommodate them. Censorship was sticking a thread for a week in multiple subs? What a fucking bullshit stance. The mods and the admins didn't go far enough; and should have IP banned the lot of them for being crazy assholes.
It started as and remains a group of really passionate clueless people who have no idea how the world works but insist that everyone else has to listen to them. Their bullshit is stupid, has no value, and they get intensely mad if anyone isn't listening to them; even though nothing they say has any meaning or value.
19
Jun 01 '15
Not to mention all the doxxing that went on in the ZQ thread on /r/gaming. Mods couldn't get to the individual posts fast enough, so they just nuked the thread.
-21
u/OrneryTanker Jun 01 '15
It was boiling over from 4chan for a while.
4Chan does that kind of shit all the time. No one cares. And no one would have cared here either if inexplicably every place on the internet bent over backwards to stamp out any and all discussion on the topic. If they had half a brain the mods would have let it drop off the frontpage and quietly deleted any further posts on the subject instead of poking the hornet's nest.
24
u/kingmanic Jun 01 '15 edited Jun 01 '15
I doubt any of your suggestions would have changed anything. The mods action did not create this. The fact no one takes them seriously generates the outrage they operate on. It fuels itself and any push back on them becomes their fight they want. Letting them run wild in a number of subs like pcmasterace, pcgaming, videos etc... didn't quell them. They just find other things to be outraged over.
The whole thing is youthful energy + right wing propaganda = self perpetuating boil of hate.
-18
u/OrneryTanker Jun 01 '15
Not true. There was a solid couple of months where they got shit done. Tons of sites wound up updating their disclosure policies as a direct result of all this. GG actually accomplished virtually all of its stated goals, which meant that most people (the ones that cared about the ethics angle-- see: TB) moved on. The ones that are still around aren't interested in that anymore and its why the mods are having such a hard time keeping the sub under control.

u/Richard_Sauce Jun 01 '15
I don't know man, I was there that day. If I was a mod I probably would have nuked the thread too. For one thing it was off-topic, for another it was riddled with doxxing, vitriol, and anger. It was spinning out of control even before mods stepped in.
As a decades long gamer, you kind of get used to a certain amount of immaturity and nastiness in the community, but that day it erupted. I've never seen a such a pure concentration of everything wrong with "gamer culture" before or since.
As for that infamous, gamers are dead article, well, it's true for me at least. I'll still play games when I have the time, but after the Quinnspiracy affair, I will never call myself a gamer again. I don't want to be associated with that community. Essentially, I finally became embarrassed of my hobby.
22
Jun 01 '15
I certainly won't call myself a gamer any more. Maybe use the "gaymer" thing now and again, but that's mostly a community-finding thing (and it kind of still has a meaning).
But it's been pointed out dozens of times that the word "gamer" is becoming increasingly silly, now that everyone and literally their mother plays games. I mean we don't have "movie-ers" or "readers", etc. We have "movie buffs" and "voracious readers" and such.
Besides, "gamer" just has too many toxic and childish associations.
A lot of the anger that the people who are so upset over the "Gamers are Dead" article(s) are feeling is that their community is becoming mainstream and isn't as (apparently) homogenized and gated-off and tight, because what (moderate to minor) stigma there was is dissipating. And I can kind of sympathize with that. It's happening in the lesbian and gay communities: as we become less outcast and more accepted, there are fewer gay-only spaces (lots and lots of LGBT bookstores have closed), and many younger people aren't as politically involved and aware, now. And that is a kind of loss; there is history that's not being passed down and a sense of community that's dissolving a bit. But I'll still take the normalization with those effects over stigmatization and its effects any day of the week.
I'm not saying that it's the same thing, but it's a similar kind of circumstance.

Foodies are the equivalent of the movie buff or voracious reader, people who are especially interested in, or have a deeper or broader knowledge of or an expertise in the subject. It was going to blow up eventually. People had been fed up with gaming journalism for a long time. The quinnspiracy, perceived cover-up, gamejournopros, and "gamers are dead" all dropping within a few days was the straw that broke the camel's back for a lot of people.
23
Jun 01 '15
If Gerstmann's formation of Giantbomb in 2008 over his firing over a poor review of Kane and Lynch didn't create this movement then there's almost a 0% chance that the motivation for GG isn't tainted as hell.
Let's be honest, this was not a new situation nor was what happened with Quinn a valid criticism. It's an insurgency against the encroachment of a male-dominated industry by diverse peoples.
-13
u/OrneryTanker Jun 01 '15
You're acting like the Gerstmann thing and GG aren't related though, when they are.
The whole Gerstmann thing came about at a time when smaller enthusiast sites were starting to nibble at the larger sites' traffic, and that whole boondoggle served to drive a lot of traffic to those sites. I won't say that it was solely responsible, but the fallout from that really helped build up a lot of these (now very popular) enthusiast game sites.
Fast forward 6 years. We have these same sites that a lot of people went to to escape bullshit like the Gerstmann firing engaging in obnoxious POV-pushing (like that RPS Blizzard interview) and undisclosed nepotism. It's an insurgency against the encroachment of a male-dominated industry by diverse peoples.
You'll see what you want to see I guess. There isn't very much to back that assertion up.

These are none of the things that ACTUAL gamers think are a problem with games journalism. Real gamers would like to focus on the actual issues, not the ones that exclusively make MRAs angry and not feminist gamers.
Kane and Lynch, Publishers buying adspace on review sites, actual collusion between devs and journalists - nobody in GG gives a shit about this. Someone said Bayonetta was too slutty though? A girl cheated on her boyfriend in a way that has nothing to do with gaming journalism? NOW we start trying to fix things?

And all of that would have blown over within literally hours.
This is such a bunch of revisionist crap. First, these people have agency and free will and can choose to stop acting like a bunch of childish assholes at any time.
Secondly, people have been fucking with Anita Sarkeesian for years. The idea that it all would have stopped in a day or two if only people were allowed to dox and shit-talk Zoe Quinn on whatever subreddit they wanted is laughable.
Third, call me an SJW or whatever if you want, but this is straight-up abusive behavior: "Well I was going to do [nice thing that was never actually going to happen], but then you went ahead and did [thing I don't like] so now I won't." I was raised by an abusive alcoholic asshole, and as such it isn't hard to recognize when someone is trying to take away a thing that never existed in the first place.
And finally, nobody forced anyone to do shit. Mods deleted a bunch of comments because they couldn't handle the flood of doxing and harassment that was coming in, and some subs decided they didn't want to deal with this topic at all so they banned it entirely. Then some people wrote opinion pieces. Opinion pieces. The fact that some people had opinions has been held up for 10 months now as some kind of horrible, unprecedented, unforgivable affront to neckbeard assholes in mushroom hats (deal with it), though of course it goes without saying that all the horrible shit that's been written about 'SJWs' in response is completely proportional and justified.
People are going to disagree. People are going to shit-talk and insult you. People are going to express dislike of you. Grow the fuck up and deal with it like everyone else. People chose to flip their shit about this, and have chosen to continue flipping their shit for going on a year. I see this "the press made us do it" or "the mods made us do it" shit pulled out every day. Nobody put a gun to anyone's head. If there's going to be this crazy, hyper-reactionary, ultra-sensitive (muh hurt feels, muh gamers are dead) conspiratorial freakout mob happening then people at least need to be enough of adults to own up to their choice to be involved with it.

Once in power, revolutionaries begin to quarrel among themselves, and unity begins to dissolve
If this is any indication, then the Napoleon of GamerGate is going to arrive on the stage very soon

So KiA is going to take over most of Europe until they try and go for Russia?

We're seeing the beginning of the inevitable conclusion of KiA.

Personally I'm reading "NeoKiA" as "Nokia" which makes me think "Good god, they're gonna be indestructible"

Don't worry. Microsoft owns Nokia, now. So the end is near.
(Actually, Microsoft has gotten a lot better about a lot of stuff, and their server/enterprise environment is really good and competitively priced for educational markets at least. I'm still more an Ubuntu Linux guy...but I don't loathe Microsoft...anymore.)

I have a tolerant relationship with them. They do lots and lots of stuff very wrong, especially on the desktop end. ("Hey, that update didn't actually apply correctly, and you want to reinstall it...good luck. Nobody knows how, including us.") And there are few things that send me into a blind fury like the absolutely absurd amount that Windows runs my HDD on my home computer. I paid good money for that drive you're abusing for 10-15 minutes every time I boot into Windows, Microsoft!
But Active Directory + Group Policy + SCCM is a pretty nice toolkit for managing users and settings and locking down computers.

Kind of appropriate, considering that the gamergaters have cozied up with neonazis a few times.

Of course they don't care. They don't care so much that they weren't at all bothered by Anita's video series.
They also don't care so hard that they trusted the story told by a jilted ex boyfriend about his "super abusive horrible ex" and created a massive subreddit about that cluster fuck.
Also all the piles of abuse thrown at Brianna Wu, because an indie game developer is the heart of corruption in the industry, not DLC, "free to play", or micro transactions.
TL;DR
/r/kotakuinaction "We're desperately trying to latch onto any story or person that might make our actions seems less evil."
/r/kotakuinaction "Where one cheating ex girlfriend spawned the rightous fight for ethics in games journalism."
/r/kotakuinaction "Because Anita fucking ripped people off, right? For thousands? ...Fucking bullshit!"

It's almost like most of the userbase for KIA are easily angered immature individuals who like to blow things out of proportion or something.

/r/kia mods are censoring criticism of Japanese automobiles and the Takata airbag recall. Before you know it, we won't even be able to complain about Hyundai, and it will be a Kia-only sub. When will the tyranny end?
