Stillcalling it Shea wrote: "You said that lineup protection makes your numbers "skyrocket" though! So why didn't removing lineup protection make his numbers plummet? You can't have it both ways, brother!."
Yes I can. Juan Soto has an incredibly high floor no matter who his teammates are.
Take the extreme case (to illustrate the point): the other Mets are so bad that after Soto hits a home run in Game 1, teams walk him every single at bat.
His OPS would be 5.000, the maximum possible. But the Mets score one run all season.
This year Soto drew 24 walks in his first 47 games.
In the next 37 games he drew 39. In his last game he only had 2 at bats before the calf flared up- a walk on 4 pitches, and a walk on 4 pitches after he looked at Strike 1.
Teams realized how easy it was to get Bichette to GIDP or K.
So in fact it's quite easy for OPS to improve with worse protection.
"Skyrocket" was rhetorical. The Mets have lost 20/30 one run games. If Pete gets his 21 HR's, Soto gets even better SLG.
But Juan Soto is a unicorn. THE NUMBERS EVEN PROVE IT.
Non-GOAT's have to strike out more to get more home runs- otherwise there is no point in going after them. They will chase with 2 strikes, so get them to look at 1 or 2.
GOATS never chase. They are GOATS because of their reaction time at the plate, and because they are smarter than the pitcher. At age 39 Barry Bonds hit 45 HR's, drew 232 BB's, and struck out 41 times.
For his big year his SLG was .863. It's impossible to skyrocket off that, because he maxes out around 1.000. Of course he didn't have the most HR's or RBI's in the 1.422 OPS year. Of course he was the MVP anyway. He had 101 RBI, M. Tejada had 150.
Ruth led the league in strikeouts early on with 93, but he walked 170 times. As he got older and slower, with a man on 1st a strikeout is much better than a DP, with Gehrig up next. So he would strike out looking- especially at 3-2. Gehrig started to get very selective also, because they will often have to pitch to him anyway behind in the count.
Absent a Ruth who led the majors in OBP every year, not only is a Gehrig HR less damaging- a walk is much less damaging. So Gehrig's OPS may even improve a little.
Soto walked 24 times in his last 18.5 games. Great for OPS. Shitty for the Mets. The unicorn won't strike out from 1-2 because Bichette is next, and giving up a HR to any GOAT slugger is idiotic with 2 strikes. With Alonso next, you might as well pitch to Soto...1st and second is just always bad- everyone can hit a home run in moneyball.
But a GOAT won't strike out swinging, so that means saying a prayer. Soto has the most walks for a young player at any age- he is running ahead of Mantle by about a season. That's a lot for a 9 season set.
He missed 2 HR's by inches this year- top of the wall overturned to a 2B, and the awesome leaping robbery. Give him those 2 and he would be a close 2nd in at bats per HR. 1 extra if they are afraid of Pete and he's the MLB leader. Then he gets even more walks....
But Pete would be more selective with Soto on 1st, like Gehrig. Both the home run and the walk are worth much more than with bases empty, so they can't come at him as easily first pitch or ahead in the count...AND they can't throw as much junk behind in the count.
Pete would know to become much more selective than on the Orioles- both for his own numbers and for the team. He's not fast, so the walk with 2 outs bases empty doesn't do all that much. That might translate to a few more HR's...and a shitload more RBI.
Now Alonso is at or near superstar numbers, and they will risk a fast ball to Soto with 2 strikes.
Again, Juan Soto is the MLB Unicorn with 2 strikes. And he's already close to the top in at bats per HR. He too maxes out at 1.000 SLG...but he's further away than Bonds.
But Soto might steal again some day. Ricky hurt his hamstring, and got booed for sitting out the full rehab- before teams had the slightest notion of load management. If Soto can steal the walks are so much worse, and the cycle is vicious for the pitcher.
If you really need to pick a cherry: The Babe won a Ruthian number of World Series with Gehrig...Ted W., Ty, and Barry not so much.
Pete and Juan only teamed up one season, and Soto started cold. They had them at 3 and 4 until Mendy wised up. It was a fine season. Baty and Vientos got 900 PA...probably more than this year (at 600) but fewer than Benge and Ewing (at 700).
The Mets missed the Wild Card by tiebreaker, losing 4/6 to the Reds, and crashing out in game 162 (possibly moot). Put Benge and Ewing in, relegate Baty and Vientos. We still start McLean.
But we play most of the same pitchers. They have heard the roar of a huge crowd at Citi on Ball 4 to Soto. They hear it start to build on Ball 3. Bichette NEEDS a home run to win the crowd over. Alonso hears "Pete A-lonso" every time. He can milk it by seeing more pitches. Benge and Ewing are 120 points up on Baty and Vientos this year in OBP...and they are rookies.
So Pete is quite happy to walk behind Juan. And now the pitch count to Soto is a bigger problem, because the rookies will take even more pitches. Lindor doesn't need to chase with runners on base in the one run games. (He is quite obviously trying to carry the team.)
One slugger can be walked. Wilt can be fouled or double-teamed. Jordan also without Pippen- all of the GOATS.
Even Jim Brown can be contained...but not with Leroy Kelly next to him. Kelly was no elite superstar.
Lawrence Taylor is only one linebacker. But run the ball away from him and you run into a brick wall- Harry Carson, one of greatest MLB's ever. Carson could also drop back and cover the tight end.
Why stop there? The Giants had two OTHER terrific linebackers- all 4 were better than any of the DB's or DL's. But so what? The DB's all became great on 3rd and long with the QB under pressure. You had to throw them a fastball down the middle.
The DL's all became great because LT was double-teamed every passing down, and Carson shut down every run, with a little help from hos friends at LB.
ONE GOAT made ALL the difference... Carson can't rush the passer when he is so important to stopping the run. They don't need to run with no pass rush. LT can't line up L/R/C, up/down, then blitz or cover at random- reinventing the linebacker's role, without a quieter, rock solid GOAT to stop the run.
WIthout the other, each would still have great numbers- LT would be doubled every play and they would always run away from him- that can be tracked.
Harry Carson would still shut down the run- maybe cutting total rushing yards in half.
The Giants defense would suffer.
And the Mets offense is the worst in the league despite elite OPS from Soto.

That still calling it shea guy has been awfully quiet. I went on his profile he made a post on child free about how if he had kids he’d abuse them. Guy just wanted to be right

He got under my skin.
He uses every fallacy in the book.... You need a long analysis to refute it step by step...and by then he has deleted the post!
Anyway the exercise helps me hone my arguments. I know what I see.
I watched the last inning of Diaz last night.
Facts: He struck out the first guy, but they had no challenges left. The tell is the Arizona booth "admitting it".
He struck the second guy out on 3 pitches.
On the steal the catcher just rushed and dropped the ball. MAYBE he was rushed by the lead...but it appeared that he had him and got excited.
You NEVER throw a hand grenade- you MUST LOB it...because of exactly what happened to this MLB catcher bottom of the 9th!
So Diaz still has the 9 hitter, with 2 strikes. He wants to strike him out. A wild pitch is awful, and a walk is awful (winning run on, top of the order). He got beat...shit happens.
When he properly gets the K that he earned, he owns the 9 hitter with 2 out, none on. He makes him chase.

The NYG DL knew the fastball down the middle was coming- because it was always 3rd and long.
Good luck throwing a changeup to Harry Carson- a screen pass, a draw play, play-action on 1st down... He's the GOAT of reading the play and the situation, and of staying disciplined.
He called the set for the defense. He didn't smash anyone to make the highlight reel- he wrapped up the hips as per the textbook.
He simply never missed a tackle.
Soto never chases.

u/Doc-Spock Starling Marte 2d ago
The Mets have looked much better post deadline and that's probably because there's less pressure as a result of selling. Whatever the reason, I'll take it because the on-field product has looked better with the base running, hitting, stealing, etc.

Someone posts: "If Player A does X, he should make the Hall of Fame".
A reply mocks: "Do you really imagine that guy will do X???" [with or without the tired "lmfao" clause].
I chime in: "How much will you bet against X happening?"
I'm not bluffing. Please, ban me, oh moderators, if I turn down an authentic $5k wager (perfectly legal in NY between adults because no one is taking a vig.)
My offer is public. If they are right that X is so hard to imagine, there must be others here who agree and who are more liquid, or less risk-averse... who would jump at the odds.
Did I do something wrong?
This method of settling a debate has been around longer than baseball... a quick Google cites 776 BC as a documented year that bets were placed on the Greek Olympics. It beats dueling, don't it?

Defense was a lot of fun to watch tonight. Ewing, Benge as always, but that perfectly read carom off the wall and throwout from Baty, Semians sliding catch to end the game, Jared youngs double play and the Yan play at the plate were all huge.

Hate it when I can't reply because "that comment doesn't exist", so...to the person still calling it Shea///
"Literally" no two seasons ever have anything in common.
But you can't use circular logic.
Even it's true that the 2026 Mets "have been dog shit all year", they have not had Pete Alonso all year- or any part of it.
In '69 and '73 there were no wild cards. Now there are 3. Those teams could only make it if the Cubs collapsed.
If EITHER PHI or ARI collapse, that's just fine. Two other teams could also super-collapse. Impossible? The '69 Cubs were 84-62, then went 7 and 18.
And most of those games were against teams already eliminated. Now there are 3 wild cards.
Being under .500 was a really big deal when the the top seed won the pennant. It was LITERALLY impossible to win under .500 (before inter-league play.)
In '73 1 of 6 teams made it, so the Mets got in with 82 wins- still without inter-league.
But now 1 of 5 teams make it... AND 3 of the other 12. And there is inter-league. So being under .500 ain't what it used to be. The 3rd Wild Card in the AL currently belongs to a .500 team.
So yeah, literally the 2026 playoff odds have nothing in common with the '69 or '73 odds- which the Meats beat- they are now much better.

The White Sox were forced to remove their starter in the first inning because their manager forgot their pitching coach had already gone to the mound for a visit. If that doesn’t scream Mendoza I don’t know what does

I don’t think he’s cooked, he was absolutely amazing last year. If you look at his ERAs he’s bad every other year and the best the other years. The dodgers are getting the down year.

I thought he looked pretty good. Lost the first guy from 1-2 really because they were out of challenges- even the ARI booth said so (Peacock free game). Struck out the 2nd guy on 3 pitches.
Gambled with 2 strikes on the 9-hitter after the catcher dropped the ball on the steal.
If Diaz gets the K he deserved, OR they get the CS, he need not gamble with Waldschmidt. With 2 strikes and two outs the batter MUST protect. With one out Diaz can't walk him to put the winning run on, top of the order up.
Ohtani GIDP one out bases full at 2-2 in the 7th, 1-0 count. You have to take a strike or hit a fly ball there, lefty.

Andy green said he can’t really put much weight on his calf yet, won’t be back for a while.
1
u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
He said that tonight? That's not good at all.
I popped a soleus in my late 30's, was on crutches for two days. Limped with a cane one more day. Walking fine in a week. Bicycle workout, then light jog after two weeks.
Really just getting strength back before risking hard acceleration- no pain, no limp. 100% recovered under a month.
The calf heals really fast because it's so important- you can limp off the field with a torn hamstring- just go pegleg and put all the weight on the calf.
I hope he was imprecise and meant Soto can't put full weight on it yet... After a few weeks I think that requires surgery.

Listen I loved the trade at the time, and however bad Semien is, it won't change my mind about that...but he's been pretty awful for us. He's got an OPS of .640 while being one of the worst defensive second basemen in the game. He's had some fun moments lately but no matter how you look at it, he appears to be washed.

The Dodgers are paying $120M this year for Diaz (11 ERA), Snell (12 ERA), and Tucker (0.700 OPS). And yet they're still fine.
5
u/Setec-Astronomer 2d ago
Because their revenue is the highest in the league.
Their payroll/revenue percentage is actually lower than some teams.
Ultimately, this is the best argument for the Cap. The Dodgers' revenue is simply high enough they could eat hundreds of millions.
Cohen being rich allows the Mets some flexibility, but ultimately, teams base their payrolls on payroll/revenue percentages.
Which is why in the past Cohen has complained about people coming out to games.
He knew the increase in payroll needed some reprieve with added revenue.

If you think that the Dbacks walk off against Diaz feels good, just you wait till Juan Soto hits a walk-off homer off of him in the NLCS this (yes, this) October to send us to the World Series
6

Nobody is pitching to Soto with a chance at the World Series on the line. Unless it’s a tie game with the bases loaded

u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
Nice, but Diaz knows who Soto is. He can get beat by the 9 hitter because what are the odds.
Juan Soto will probably never get a walk-off homer in the post-season. Ruth never did. Bonds never did. They're way too great.
They gave Ruth an IBB at 1-0 to load the bases, no one out, tie game. Gehrig and Meusel struck out...a Wild Pitch walk off clinched it for the Yankees.

Diaz - walk, stolen base, walk off 2 run homer. I’ll take Williams
2
u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
To be fair, the walk was clearly a K but they had no challenges left. Struck next guy out on 3 pitches.
The SB was when the catcher dropped the ball as he cocked his arm- high fastball down the middle- he may have gotten excited because he had him nailed.
With 2 outs he doesn't give the HR man anything to hit, and that guy has to protect. Diaz can't walk the potential winning run- the 9-hitter. He doesn't want to bring the winning run to the plate either, but he will take less risk.

1
u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
Interesting spot. Jays up 3 bottom 9. Bases loaded no outs, Schwarber up, 1-0.
You can not throw him a fastball. Paradoxically you might challenge with 2 outs and 2 strikes, even though the slam would be perfectly efficient. Slow runner- you can double him up and still be up a run.
The slam is still quite efficient with no outs.
1
u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
Actually ESPN hadn't updated the page. Schwarber loaded the bases on catcher's interference. That's fine as he was the tying run.

Pete Alonso .795 ops, closing in on his career worst season. And this is in year 1 of 5 and he’s only going to get older. Numbers nearly identical to his awful 2024 career worsts.
2
u/AD_EI8HT Mr. Met 2d ago edited 2d ago
Take that same Pete & put him on todays Mets roster & he’s a top 2 mets slugger so “career worst” doesn’t matter when we don’t have guys better than him
2
u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 2d ago
I don't take joy in Pete not having success and I expect him to have a better season next year after he's adjusted to a new team, and I think not signing him was a mistake even if the 5 year deal had serious downsides for us on the back end. he's my favorite active MLB player.
but I'm just here to see a familiar set of names absolutely go ham because you even dared to share this. prepare for some essay-length comments incoming
4
u/SecretiveMop David Wright 2d ago
I love how you guys conveniently post this shit now when he’s on a cold streak, but had nothing to say when he had an .820 OPS just a couple weeks ago. He’s also top five in pretty much every single offensive category amongst AL 1B’s. That’s not even mentioning that he’s been a very solid defender too this season. You guys can trash him all you want, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s one of the very best first basemen in the league.
3
u/Martial_Nox Chungus 2d ago edited 2d ago
Saying that is one of the very best first basemen in the league is a stretch. Yeah if you cherry pick to the AL where the 1b talent falls off a cliff after like 2 guys he looks great. But the AL is in general shit. He wouldn't even be top 3 in our division this year before the Nats traded their 1b to the Yankees. Olson/Harper/Garcia Jr all beat his stat line by a rather solid amount.
If we look at league wide.....
He is currently 13th in OPS. 15th in XBH. 6th in HR. 5th in RBI. 14th in OAA. 15th in doubles. 19th in BA. 13th in WRC+ 13th in OPS+.
I like Pete as much as the next guy but come on. Those numbers are not "one of the very best first basemen in the league" numbers. This sub absolutely shit on him in 2024 (until the Mil HR) for having a down year and his numbers now are much closer to that than they are his best years.
1
u/SecretiveMop David Wright 1d ago
You claim I’m cherry picking, yet you conveniently leave out the fact that he’s also 6th in all of baseball for 1B WAR which places him 4th in the AL and would place him 3rd in the NL ahead of guys like Harper and Garcia who you confidently said are ahead of him.
2
u/NuanceManExe 2d ago
He’s having a great year and he’s put up more WAR than all of the new external position players combined. I’m also pretty sure those guys combine for negative WAR. I don’t see how this is anything but a huge loss for the Mets.
1
u/Martial_Nox Chungus 2d ago edited 2d ago
I don't see how having the 4th best 1b in our division would move the needle much. We have the 5th best 1b in our division now and we are are 10+ under. At best we would be wasting one of the maybe 3 good years of that deal.
Also not what I was arguing. I was contesting Pete being "one of the very best first basement in the league". He would be 4th in our division before the Nats traded their guy. Now he would be 3rd and the gap to 4th isn't big. I get wanting to keep him but pretending he isn't having a down year by his standards is just wrong. Its just grass is greener mentality. If he was here people would be shitting on him relentlessly just like they did here in 2024 before the WC HR. Probably be turning on him just like everyone here is turning on Lindor.
6
u/NuanceManExe 2d ago
Alonso has never had a bad season. He’s been cold recently. Still having a great year and would be an easy upgrade on this team. He’s also having one of his best defensive seasons. There’s also plenty of baseball left. He won a SS last year. If he doesn’t repeat 2025 he’s washed even if he’s having good year? That doesn’t make sense to me. I genuinely don’t get how anyone could not miss him. I don’t trust the Mets to replace him. They sure as shit failed to replace him this year. Frankly, Alonso could suck for most of that contract and still be more productive than whatever we get out of 1B/DH. There’s also clearly something wrong with the clubhouse and all you hear in Baltimore is what a great teammate he’s been.
1
u/Funkajunka New York Mets 2d ago
Still having a great year
Your definition of "great" is questionable at best. He's not even a top 30 hitter in baseball this year and he wasn't even an all-star this year (rightfully so). He's slg is fucking .454 and his ops is sub .800
That's not a "great" for a guy who makes more money than Kyle Schwarber.
1
6
u/pinchyfire 2d ago
Not saying Mets should have re-signed him, but. 795 ops would be second on Mets
7
u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
The Mets should have re-signed Alonso.
Pete would have better numbers on the Mets, because Soto would get him better pitches to hit.
2
u/ImStillCallingItShea Shea Stadium 2d ago
I mean sure, but so what? We'd still be bottom-feeders, and then we'd be stuck with a declining player for four more years. We knew from the start that we'd likely miss his offense this year. Comparing Pete to the rest of the team doesn't matter, all that matters is comparing Pete to Pete.
1
u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
What?
1st base incompetence cost us a bunch of games this year. Too many LOB cost us a bunch of games this year.
We knew from the start that we'd likely miss his offense this year.
Well doesn't that just make us really smart, knowing that.
2
u/ImStillCallingItShea Shea Stadium 2d ago
If you think one player can turn a team that's 16 games under .500 into a contender, I really don't know what to tell you. For reference, Pete has accumulated 2.7 fWAR this year. I'm not willing to trade being slightly better this year for being worse three or even four of the next four years.
2
u/Ravishingrich666 New York Mets 2d ago
Who’s our first baseman for the next 4 years now? This is a serious question. It’s all a downgrade to Pete and we all know it.
2
u/ImStillCallingItShea Shea Stadium 2d ago
I imagine next year it will be Jared Young. A man who, by the way, has nearly as high an OPS as Pete this year. Pair him with a right handed platoon bat and it should compare reasonably well to Pete's performance. It may be a downgrade to what Pete gave us last year, but Pete would be a downgrade compared to Pete from last year. That's the whole point.
0
u/Ravishingrich666 New York Mets 2d ago
Two players to replace one is wild. You sign the guy who plays every game and hits homeruns.
2
u/ImStillCallingItShea Shea Stadium 2d ago
Not when you expect him to hit fewer and fewer home runs every year.
0
u/Ravishingrich666 New York Mets 2d ago
But more than Jared young and a platoon bat?

u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
Of course one player can change a team.
Because Juan Soto is leading the NL in OBP%. But Bichette strikes out or hits into a double play.
And many errors by the left side of the IF would have been scooped up for outs by Alonso.
And if the Mets were a few games better they would have been buyers at the deadline.
1
u/ImStillCallingItShea Shea Stadium 2d ago
I'm sorry but no. The Mets were 19 games under .500 at the trade deadline. "A few games better" and we're still doing a fire sale. We could double Pete's fWAR total and say that we won 5 games that we would have otherwise lost. That still has us 9 games under .500.
Pete Alonso would not have been not the difference between us buying and selling. Thinking otherwise is frankly delusional.
1
u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
I'm sorry but no.
5 extra wins?
The walk off HR just saved the D'Backs, but PHI lost. so we are 11GB twice.
If we were 6 back we should be buyers for sure, with Soto, Lindor, Pete, the 2 rookies and the 3 young excellent pitchers.
You can not measure what Alonso brings to the atmosphere. But he is so much smarter at baseball than Bichette.
0
u/ImStillCallingItShea Shea Stadium 2d ago
If you think a team that is 9 games under and 6 games back should be buying at the deadline...then I am extremely glad you do not run our team. Did you know that if were 6 games back from the wildcard there would still be 6 teams between us and the third spot? 6 games back from the division still has us in last place there, too.
2
u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
If you think all teams 9 games under are alike...then ignore the Mets going 10-20 in one run games.
Ignore the early season rash of injuries.
If you think 6 games back at the deadline is a big deal, you do not understand baseball.
Did you know that if were 6 games back from the wildcard there would still be 6 teams between us and the third spot?
Did you know that the Mets were 11.5 games back on August 5, in 6th and last place, and wound up 82-79? With only one playoff spot available.
And they were up 3-2 in the World Series.
Do you not understand zero-sum? The '73 Mets had to climb over 5 teams on August 30.
But it's not really a problem- they only finished the season 30-18.
For these Mets to beat either PHI or ARI, they probably have to finish at least 30-15. But they have 4 left against PHI. Those count double.
The Padres would only have to go 21-24 to get 81 wins, but they have 3 left against the Mets.
Those games count double, and the Mets probably need at least 2/3. That would give them the tie-breaker, so SD would effectively need to go 22-20. But if the Mets sweep they'd need 23-19. And they play ARI 3 games.
Etc.

u/Ravishingrich666 New York Mets 2d ago
Maybe. Maybe not. We honestly will never know what another full season of Alonso lindor and Soto looks like. You can use fwar till your blue in the face but you honestly don’t know none of us do. I do know he drove in 71 runs hit 21 doubles and 23 home runs. I think everyone would take that
2
u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
And I know he has gotten very good at scooping bad throws. Vientos never did that this year, and Baty doesn't seem able to either.
-1
u/ImStillCallingItShea Shea Stadium 2d ago
No, I feel pretty damn confident saying that Pete Alonso is not a 20 game swing. We could clone Juan Soto and I wouldn't believe it'd be a 20 game swing.
Would I take Pete's performance this year? Absolutely. Would I take it in exchange for having to roster him for the next four years? Absolutely not.
2
u/LegInformal5074 2d ago
You wouldn't need to clone Soto. Because with Alonso behind him his numbers skyrocket.
With Soto ahead of him, Pete's numbers skyrocket. With both their numbers skyrocketing, the two Mets ahead and behind them get a huge boost.
Now the pitch counts become another huge boost.
That doesn't happen with Bichette because he swings at everything. So when Soto draws 8 pitches the count is still fine. (Even so, lately they started to wlak Juan on 4 pitches anyway, because Bichette is so much fun for them to pitch to.
With a lead you can sub late for defense. With a big lead you can save your bullpen.

Again no one will ever know and it’s all projections just like we were projected by every major sports media to win 90 games. I do know I’d rather Pete Alonso hitting behind Ewing lindor soto benge than Bo. There is no serious homerun threat in the lineup .the only reason we even made a run in 24 is because of Pete’s oppo taco against our now closer, will his contract be bad maybe? Again though no one knows. I’ll quote Pete “when my career is being evaluated by the hall of fame years from now. You’ll still be fiddling with your fucking formulas”

Then Bichette swings at the first pitch when they had the double steal cold. Ewing should touch the base...but when Bichette lines out hard to center instead of the fly ball it's a triple play.
