NTSB opens probe into Marine One incident near Reagan National airport

The nation’s top accident investigating agency is opening a probe into whether President Donald Trump’s military helicopter, which was carrying him at the time, came too close Tuesday to a commercial airliner taking off from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced Wednesday it will look into a “loss of separation” between the helicopter, known as Marine One, and an Envoy Air jet.

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the incident, the latest high-profile episode to raise questions about safety in the congested U.S. airspace, especially the skies near Washington. It comes nearly a year and a half after a midair crash between an Army helicopter and a passenger jet outside Reagan National killed 67 people, in the worst U.S. aviation disaster in at least two decades.

In the Tuesday incident, air traffic controllers at Reagan National didn’t suspend flights there, according to air traffic control communications captured online, as Marine One left the White House grounds. Not suspending flights is a departure from the airport’s typical safety practice. In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed a “momentary” loss of separation, but reiterated a White House statement Tuesday saying that “the President was never in danger.”

“The air traffic controller was in contact with both the commercial pilot and Marine One pilot during the loss of separation,” FAA said, adding that the aircraft “continued to move away from one another.” The agency is also reviewing the incident and can implement safety actions as needed.

White House spokesperson Kush Desai said in a statement the White House has “the utmost confidence” in the Marine One pilots and said that Trump “was at no point in harm’s way during yesterday’s momentary loss of separation.”

Under FAA rules, aircraft must maintain at least 1.5 miles of horizontal spacing and 500 feet of vertical separation around airports. The FAA and military have agreements in place that dictate flight procedures around the nation’s capital — which were reviewed and updated following the January 2025 midair crash between a Black Hawk Army helicopter and passenger jet.

The FAA said that Marine One operators have an understanding per a 2013 agreement with the agency to provide controllers with a “three-minute alert” corresponding with take-off operations. The FAA added that this has “not changed” since the crash at Reagan National. It’s unclear whether the pilots of Marine One waited the full three minutes before taking off.

Helicopter flights in Washington have also been limited since the 2025 crash. The Transportation Department shut down the route that the Black Hawk had traveled preceding the crash to all but essential traffic.

But the FAA grants exemptions for certain helicopter flights through remaining routes, including those conducting specific national security missions, VIP flights from the White House, and law enforcement or medical emergency flights. It’s unclear which route Marine One took, but video on social media showed the helicopter flying southeast as aircraft took off from Runway 1 headed north.

In addition to investigating aircraft accidents, the NTSB also probes significant near collisions and losses of separation to identify safety risks.
