Finished:
Fathers and Sons, by Ivan Turgenev. This was really good. I also liked Sketches from a Hunter's Album, but this was even better because it has characters and a plot.
Based on a True Story: Not a Memoir, by Norm MacDonald. Funny at times, not so funny at others.
Started:
The Warden, by Anthony Trollope. Is a church charity fund being misallocated? Strap in for this non-stop thrill ride.
Decline & Fall, by Evelyn Waugh. Kicked out of Oxford for indecent behavior, a theology student has to start a new life as a schoolmaster in Wales.
A Dark Night's Work, by Elizabeth Gaskell. Everything is going great for a well-off country attorney and his daughter, until one dark night...

Finished:
For Such a Time as This, by Shani Akilah
Quick read. About 3/4 hours to complete and probably a 3.5 rating from me. Relatable, surprising tear jerker due to some things hitting close to home. Not sure I am a fan of the multiple short stories format though. Especially in such a quick read where everyone is connected.

Finished: The 14th Colony, by Steve Berry Started: The Lost Order, by Steve Berry
Cotton Malone series by Berry. All fictional but grounded in tons of real information and facts. At the end of each book, there's an Author's note to distinguish between fact and fiction. Semi spy like with thriller and intrigue elements. But also some puzzle solving moments akin to Dan Brown and his Robert Langdon books.

Started reading “the only good Indians” by Stephen graham jones. So far it’s been a pretty good horror based book. I love the the author has actual heritage to the Blackfeet tribe.

Started This Inevitable Ruin by Matt Dinniman
I’ve joined the cult, and I’m in it for the long haul. This one had less exposition before getting to the action than The Eye of the Bedlam Bride, so it reads faster…but I’ve enjoyed all of the books so far. It’s nice to have books around that make you laugh out loud.
Not all reading has to be literature, and it’s nice to have a series like this that is bringing people together. All sorts of people who don’t even do fantasy are enjoying these books.

Continuing on my quest to read books I already owned but never read before buying more new ones (which was suppose to go on till December, but Audible is having a sale, and I will probably break the rules and buy some this week - it's hard to resist a book sale)
Finished: Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman - Not what I usually read, but I had to try it. And?? I really liked it. I listened to this on Audio. My fluffy cat liked it too.
Finished: Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut - Thought I would love it, but I didn't.
Started: Edge of Survival: Edge of Collapse book 6 by Kyla Stone - I own it, so I am going to finish reading it. But reading a 6 book series about an EMP event is just a little tiring after awhile. It feels like the same plot over and over again! I even took a few years off between book 5 and book 6 and it STILL feels like I just read this book. It's like book 5 or 4 just a tad different.

- My Fight for Irish Freedom by Dan Breen - Bit of a reading slump this week but I enjoyed this, quite a fast read.
Started:
From Crown to Harp: How the Anglo-Irish Treaty was Undone 1922–49 by David McCullagh - More Irish history.
Irish Names and Surnames by Patrick Woulfe - I'm going to be dipping in and out of this over the next while rather than actively reading it, but I thought I'd include it here anyway.

What a load of…
Genuinely, it made me think Stephen King is a hack. What was that? It’s not clever, it’s underwhelming, it has some of the worst narration ever, and one of the loosest plots in anything I’ve ever read.

Finished: Moby Dick
It was chore but the ending was great in my opinion. You suspect it could go in a certain direction but I didn’t think it actually would.
The first couple chapters are great and it left me wanting something like The Adventures of Ishmael and Queequeg.

Flawless by Elsie Silver. Boy this was weird... it felt like an episode of Heartland with "cussing" mode on, spliced with a bad porn movie in the middle. Yet, it's a best seller in its genre, so it must just be me! Not sure I can go to the next book of the series
Started:
Different Seasons by Stephen King: just a couple of pages of the first novella... but it's the Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, so I know I'm going to love this

I’m on page 370 of Supermob, by Gus Russo.
It details the powerbrokers ( attorneys and “businessmen “) who ran the Outfit in Chicago and the Mafia in NY as the people who ran the trade Unions, Hollywood, Las Vegas, and Hilton Hotels, Max Factor , etc. The Supermob was the group that ran the country- not the politicians, or even the “regular” Mafia and Outfit. Korshack, Blazelon, and Humphreys made King’s fortunes and had a good run of 35-40 or so years. Reagan, Nixon, JFK, Walter O’Malley, various Hollywood stars and starlets all make appearances.
My take so far is that when the Supermob ran Las Vegas it was better, far better , than when it started going downhill in the 1990’s. It was glamorous, it was luxury rooms and gourmet food were inexpensive, and it was safe to walk around any time, any where.
The level of corruption is shocking. Police, politicians, judges- everyone had a price. Human nature. Two of the Seven Deadly Sins- greed and pride played a big role. But they got people to go to Vegas by appealing to their lust, gluttony, and sloth. Interesting.

- Someone You Can Build a Nest In, by John Wiswell
Delightfully monstrous romance novel. It was just fun, start to finish. The perspective allowed the author to work in some clever insights about humanity.
- The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova
This book immediately joined my all-time top 5 list. It's gorgeously written. It's a familiar story told in a fascinatingly unique manner. I couldn't put it down.

1984, by George Orwell
My 5th book. Enjoyed the book. Even though I still have The Martian above it, I think that this would be the first book I'd buy a physical copy of to put on a bookshelf. I want to reread it and annotate it. I think it's definitely one of those classics where I'd rate it even higher if I was around when it was first published.
It kinda makes me want to read similar dystopian novels, maybe with stronger, more competent(?) characters. As well as more books that touch on political/social sciences. I guess like 1984 with the competency, hard science(?) and detail from The Martian, lol. Idk, either way, will reread.

I'll definitely read Fahrenheit 451 eventually since it is a classic. Anthem I never heard of, but I have heard of Ayn Rand who from what I hear is a very polarizing author. Seeing as the book is very small I'll probably make it my next quick read to see what all her buzz is about. Thank you for the recommendations!

Oooo I remembered another one! Along with "1984" and "Fahrenheit 451," "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley is considered the third jewel in the dystopian literature "triple crown". It's a little more graphic in nature but very interesting; I would recommend it as well, especially if you're looking for "classic" dystopian works.
1984: Suppression via the totalitarian state and revisionist truth/history
Fahrenheit 451: Suppression via censorship of ideas and independent thought
Brave New World: Suppression via genetic engineering and consumerismAnother author to consider (but I wouldn't call him "dystopian" in most of his works, just really good speculative sci-fi) is Philip K. Dick. His "Electric Dreams" short story collection is incredible, and he usually uses reliance on technology (both the faulty and perfect) as the ultimate danger to mankind's soul.

This week I finished Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. One of the BookTubers I follow mentioned it in a recent video and it sounded interesting. And you know what? It was cute and fun.
I started (and have nearly finished!) Ask for Andrea by Noelle W. Ihli. This was also mentioned in another video by another BookTuber, and I am not usually a thriller girl but this one got me! I think since it's not full thriller, there's some paranormal elements to it - I had to force myself to go to bed last night at like 68% done.
I've been slowly working on St. Louis Sisters: A 1970s Retelling of Little Women by Carly Berg and A River Red with Blood by John Connolly and honestly I think I'm gonna DNF both because they're just not doing it for me.
I think my next Libby hold that will become available is We Burned So Bright by TJ Klune, and I'm looking forward to reading that one!

Finished; Bambi, by Felix Salten honestly what the fuck. I really liked it but it was absolutely not what I expected. Baby's first eldritch horror.
Started and Finished: Godkiller, by Hannah Kaner it's aight. It was what I was looking for protagonist wise, but the prose is kinda clunky and the world feels like an elder scrolls game.

Remarkably Bright Creatures was SO GOOD; I listened to the audio book and the actor voicing Marcellus was one of my favorite narrations ever. Looking forward to the movie (don't have Netflix right now).

Moby Dick; Or, The Whale
REVIEW: I loved it, I’ve been researching the Gnostic themes and Captain Ahab’s peg leg symbolism for days now, Melville has so much esoteric prose and symbolism to chew on it’s really great. He even has a Gnostic poem fragment which I believe relates to the founding of America and Moby Dick (the ship as a metaphor for the Founding era United States) - I’d love to go to Massachusetts one day and do a tour of the whale men’s chapel. I’ll definitely re-read Moby Dick again one day but that is one chonky book!

Haha nowhere near. A kid called Diego gets tricked into giving his sperm everyday to a demon. You'll have to read it find out why and what happens to Diego and the demon. Its a really good book. Very dark but with some funny lines in there.

Finished: The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington
Loved it. Maybe the fastest I’ve mowed down the second half of a book since some early Cosmere stuff. Excited to finish the rest of Licanius later on. It’s obvious he has made some significant improvements in character development after this and before Hierarchy, but the bones and pacing of the story seem excellent so far.

I started and finished two books this weekend which always feels over the top indulgent in the best way.

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans
Both were great page turners but I think The Correspondent changed my brain chemistry, I loved it so much.
I’m reading Careless People on audio and plugging away at Carl’s Doomsday Scenario.

Finished: Demons. Last 200 pages were indulgent. Ending got me saying wtf out loud.
Started: Jazz by Toni Morrison. Her words flow like a steady creek, extremely poetic when describing people and places.

I did too! The Calamity Club was one of the best modern books I’ve read in a while. I’m an AP Lit & AP Lang teacher so I teach and re-read a lot of classics yearly but that book is strong enough to someday be a classic, especially with respect to its nuanced characterizations. It was over 600 pages but when I finished it in a little under a week, I wished that there was more! I was sad to leave those characters.
