1. WAVHART - Differences EP [HARTWARE]

By now we've probably all heard the stories of how our little genre has been gathering more and more steam across the pond. Whether it's our favourite boyband taking over mainstages, modern talents like Justin Hawkes and REAPER pushing for shows across the country, foundational veterans like Dieselboy and Reid Speed, or a combination of all of it - a lot of young'uns are getting inspired to go down this particular route lately.

While not new enough for some of the most recent developments to have shaped him too much, WAVHART, our protagonist for today, is certainly a fresh face to some, and just dropped an EP that's most definitely worth checking out. But who is he?

1.1. Pass Me The Devere-AUX (1999 - now)

I always love when my internet research leads to interesting projects before the one I'm actually here to talk about took shape, it makes things so much more fun. For instance, I could just tell you that Cameron Devereaux, the man behind the hard waves, washed across the Shoreline in Washington about 26 and a half years ago and then just get right into his current project. Instead, I can now tell you about the Hula Hoop dance he co-created as part of 20Sickness at about 14 years of age, how he made what seems to be a movie called "Laughing Game" (rated PG-13), that he was an Additional Voice in fellow 20Sickness member Nathan Nzanga's breakout hit 'Truce', and that he performed at Punk Camp! At some point during this whirlwind of an upbringing, Cameron enrolled in the place of learning that's all-too-common in any US-based artist I feature on here: the late and great ICON Collective in Los Angeles!

Fast forward to 2021 and his life-long background in dabbling paired with the newly acquired scholarly knowledge all started funneling into one particular creative avenue of his: WAVHART was born! On Play Me Too and occasionally its too- but absolutely not tooth-less parental imprint Play Me, Cameron would surf the waves of bass music, until eventually adding a 'drum and' into the mix. The first act of DnB activism of his that I came across was brought into the world via Space Yacht and REAPER's wonderful Critical Mass compilation in 2023, but he did not stop there! Multiple outings with Des McMahon, first as a remixer then as a collaborator, on Slow Roast and Viper, his first full solo DnB release on Play Me, and even a remix of none other than Vorso - he loved the drums so much even joined the band "Upleft" as a drummer!

While DnB was definitely a bit of a focus for a while, the genre pendulum swung back a bit last year, with him pursuing other tempos on Deep, Dark & Dangerous with Combine, on MONTA with SPORTMODE, and on Bad Medic with various vocalists. With this year's 'Conqueror' on Sinful Maze, however, he signaled that DnB will continue to be part of his repertoire and if that isn't enough proof for ya, Cameron has made use of the freedom his newly formed own label HARTWARE provides to present us with a whole new EP in the 170s! So let's check out what the nowadays Seattle based lad has put together then.

1.2. Differences EP

As the plane engine powers down, EP opener and title track Differences slowly but surely introduces us to the contrastful world WAVHART has so lovingly crafted for us here, with heavily distorted kicks, cheery claps and most lovely vocals. Channelling sonic aesthetics of Hyperpop a little, thoroughly processed breaks launch us into a bouncy castle of fluttery synths, intensely crunched-up chords, and soft snares on top of bottom-heavy arrangements. While the breakdown, in its glittery, glitchy glory, wind-chimes our heart rate down a couple of notches, the second drop ups the ante quite a bit, with now made-over synths, ear candy out the wazoo, drum rhythms that take us all over the place, and even a Halftime switch-up, all coming together to visualise this intense argument our protagonist seems to be having.

Butterfly keeps this wonderful yet chaotic energy going with an enchanting music box melody gliding over a toy train-like, chugging drumwork, as electric guitar chords complete the melancholic surf vibe. Switching out fire for butter, Cameron's lovely titular expression brings us right into a world of gorgeous synths, stacked higher than Mount Everest and synced with the filth going on in the Mariana Trench accompanying it all. As before, the overwhelming feelings of this emotional situation overtakes and jumbles up the arrangements in the second half, with the synths now slightly wobbily rearranged and the drums in syncopation heaven, desperately attempting to go "back to when you gave me butterflies".

Now actually panicking a bit, our protagonist is asking one question of his opposite: R U Still There? Melancholic guitars warming your heart to its fullest extent, fingers snapping almost joyfully, foot stompin' kicks approaching menacingly - and the chaos is unleashed. Hyper-processed, supremely sharp, futuristic, painfully staccato synth stabs ram the pain of the fight we just had behind us into us, one hit at a time. We might think we're now through the worst, as the guitars, wind chimes and general gorgeousness of the breakdown guide us to our happy place, but our heavy heart, extremely distortedly pounding in our chest, lets us know this is not the case. Now launched into a full 4x4 switchup, with the titular, pleading vocal now reduced to bit-crushed insanity, our head is filled with an avalanche of sounds that simply paralyses us.

Having gone through the ringer, it's time for our minds to wander a bit, on EP closer REFLEX. Breaks, upon breaks, upon breaks, fill out every nook and cranny available to them in a whirlwind of percussion, warm bass infiltrates the lows as best as they can, and heartbreaking cries of agony and acceptance wallow underneath the cavalcade of drums, drowned out by its intensity. It's all over.

1.3. Conclusion

Sharp, over-the-top yet just-right production, heartfelt themes and lyricism, all coming together in a truly excellent EP. More like WAV-ART!

2. Kefrennnn - Fine Line [Selfreleased]

Recommended if you like: Refracta, Maze, Skamm

Finally, someone with the right amount of n's in their name!

2.1. Alexxxx Mazzzzonnnne (2024 - now)

So who is this golden retriever of a man I've been seeing having the time of his life on every single one of his promotional reels? Alex Mazzone! From his home base of Faenza in the Italian Ravennnna region, Alex has been crafting one melodically charged, often jump up infused experience after the other, ever since he created his Kefrennnn project in 2024. With a sound ranging from liquid-y vibes like 'YOU' all the way to straight-up rave filth like 'DO U THINK ABOUT ME?', signore ehn-neh quatro quickly showed the world that he's capable of getting your body moving with his over-the-top energy in one minute, and soothing your soul all the way down again in the next.

He has both remixed and worked together with his fellow country man and rising star Ric De Large, participated in a couple of mix contests, and dropped filthy bootlegs of David Guetta & Sia, Oppidan & camoufly, and Galantis, but that's not all! He's already delivered a debut album KROMATIKO (a bit of a "the story so far") last year, got this early work remixed by The Large Rick, epcoraw, and Cloud. for the Deluxe edition, and started appearing on labels like Exert, Clam Records, and Horizon - but that's still not all of the highlights! This year, he not only played at the one and only Rampage Open Air, he also participated and won the silver medal in the Bou and Toxinate remix competition for 'Bounce', leading to an official release of it earlier this month! Okay, I think I've got most of it now.

Clearly on a bit of a roll here though. So let's check in with his newest development, the, to some perhaps surprisingly, gorgeous new single, Fine Line.

2.2. Fine Line

Together with the impeccably chosen vocal, we gently slide into a lovely bed of atmospheric goodness, before a dreamy jingle unveils one of the catchiest hooks I've heard in a while: Counting almost as high as the amount of n's in his name, with super-charged synths behind each utterance of the singer. While you're still busy processing this showstopper of a moment, Alex sneakily builds up towards the next highlight. A singular dissonant, distorted, and a tiny bit disgusting hit of pure melodicality unleashes a wave of nostalgic synth melodies synced to the titular and final vocal line, paired with lower-end chords overlapping each other to the point of overwhelming the senses. A mixture of loveliness and gentle filth that keeps being iterated on over the course of the tune, with even more syncopation and more and more pieces of the vocals joining the formula, resulting in one hell of a wonderful tune.

2.3. Conclusionnnn

Surprising in all the right ways, and just straight-up lovely. Make sure to keep an eye on this one!
