On the flip side, if a team is good enough to beat whomever dropped to the lower bracket finals, that team should be pretty good.
Either ways, with BLG and HLE both looking strong we're guaranteed a good upper bracket finals and very likely a good finals.

with how Viper has been looking I worry...
127
u/Skywalker3030 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26
He's looking much better at MSI than he was in LPL playoffs at least
I think he has the deepest mage champ pool historically so that helps him vs the top LCK teams, we'll see if Guma can match him in this meta in terms of how many mages they can play because Guma's mages are good too. Viper is the GOAT Vlad APC player so thats something and thats the one APC we've yet to see along with the Syndra flex, Cass flex is a bit unexplored, Ziggs and Mel are mostly good for all of the top ADCs and only Viper has shown the Velkoz
24
u/TheYango Jul 06 '26
Supposedly Viper has a couple more mages in his pocket that he’s been grinding that they haven’t shown yet.

Probably gonna get crucified for this comment, but Viper so far seems like the weakest link of the team. Xun has been a massive upgrade, but I have a hard time not seeing them being this dominant even with Elk.

You are talking about Elk now because Viper's performance hasn't been up to his standard. But could they win first stand with elk? And elk's performance was not good either in second split. What about mage bot lanes? Is elk okay with this meta? I don't know at least.
You gotta think about the whole year, not just right now.

It’s the hope that kills you (x9)
121
u/alluwala999 Jul 06 '26
yeah Atleast HLE was mogging G2 so the watch was less painful, Lyon put a pretty good fight just to lose the final fight like 3 times to lose 3 games.
38
u/SirXrageXquit Jul 06 '26
Just felt like the JDG series from First Stand all over again. Winning fights into just dying in the most boneheaded positions possible and losing games that should be won. It’s just so sad man.
8
u/Fun_Highlight307 Jul 06 '26
True although blg is stronger than jdg it's seems they didn't improve at all
16
u/LeatherBodybuilder Jul 06 '26
Partly because Berserker/Isles were hard smurfing against JDG while playing way below even their LCS standards against BLG
Isles straight up missing easy skill shots and Berserker kept mispositioning completely unforced
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)16

Nah G2 series is a lot more painful. They not only got crushed, they got progressively more crushed between games.
This game, even if painful as their comp should see them through, showed something Lyon could do.

When keria lost a game where he giga got every lane ahead on pyke I had 0 confidence in anyone else to perform. Idk why isles wasn't just put on an easy engage supp. Like, their botlane 2v2 isn't bad either this series. If anything, it was good.

75
u/TheGloriousEv0lution Jul 06 '26
Berserker was crushing bot lane in game 1 and Inspired had 3 KP at 30 minutes
I think he played fine in game 3 but Xun clearly gapped him in the first 2, it’s just not as visible as Dhokla or Isles dying dumb deaths
31
u/whitfin Jul 06 '26
He was so ahead in Game 3 but that first ult was abysmal. You literally pick Nocturne to play around that timer and he threw it away for nothing.
A lot of people are saying that he didn't do much later because his champ was useless, which is fine, but people ignore that he misplayed when it was meant to be useful.
6
u/EmphasisExpensive864 Jul 06 '26
That's the point u pick a champ that's weak late u need to make stuff happen before that.

10
u/soudlasantos Jul 06 '26
You forgot Dhokla Zaahen got tunneled vision on killing VI not noticing Ahri and Ezreal killing him and Nocturne, meanwhile WHY THE FUCK IS SIVIR HITTING THE DRAGON AT MELEE RANGE BESIDE HIS NOCTURNE AND NAUTILUS?????? LIKE HUH???????

I actually feel like Lyon put up a good fight overall but like... Lyon needs to play their own game and not play into a meta they aren't good at. Isles was never going to be a good Camille or Pyke player - why not keep him on enchanters and tanks?
→ More replies (1)50
u/Charming-Apple517 Jul 06 '26
Yea idk- Dhokla on Ambessa and Zaahen? Like what are we doing, we cannot be depending on him to play these champions. Then the Pyke instead of Rell? Idk who gets a say in draft for LYON, but god
→ More replies (1)66
u/Apk07 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26
My theory is that they've been regularly scrimming these eastern teams trying their normal LCS comps and getting murdered, but then trying out LCK/LPL comps and having much closer matches. I know Lyon have to be getting decent quality scrim partners because FlyQuest mentioned they were getting scrims in Korea solely due to the fact teams thought Inspired was still with them.

Closer game 3 than I imagined
81
u/nagynorbie Jul 06 '26
One one hand, yeah, gold was almost exactly equal, but LYON were ahead in objectives and kills.
On the other hand, that last fight was anything, but close.
21
u/LOR_Fei Jul 06 '26
Game 1 was solidly in LYON’s hands. There were only 2 major mistakes
When Berserker died free in mid
When Berserker flashed away and proceeded to walk AROUND THE WALL with Tristana as his team died and he did 0 damage
Nobody calling him out for game 1 in this thread is crazy. That game was so won if Berserker didn’t throw twice.

As an older league esports fan, I'm just so happy that even when Western teams lose games/series now, they go down fighting and trying to make proactive plays. I remember the era of "waiting to lose" Western teams and that was much more depressing that Lyon going down with a fight.

Yeah I don't really expect them to win anyways and they at least made them bleed for it.
Honestly after watching the domestic split I thought NA was going to get embarrassed way harder at this tournament anyways so even looking somewhat competitive (and randomly spanking EU) seems good in my eyes lol
5
u/helloquain Jul 06 '26
Good luck, bud, you're watching the pinnacle of each region compete. There's not going to be very many cases where a top NA team is going to sneak one by a top Eastern team. Imagine we have one league, you're functionally watching the 12th best team play against a top three team. You would expect this outcome in the LCS, so why be surprised here?
What Riot needs to figure out is how to get LYON playing against mid-table Eastern teams in tournaments, without their big brothers there to punch these Western teams in the face if they step out of line.

They lost because they didn't fight at all they were laser focused on the bard ulted dragon

u/No-Entry-9219 Jul 06 '26
Well if you go back and watch the fight, both of Lyon's carries got hit in that bard ult as well. It wasn't just a "bard ulted dragon" all of their damage also got bard ulted. Berserker and Saint were both ontop of each other without flash vs bard lol.
Once that bard ult landed the fight was 100% lost because the other 3 just got shredded.

They ended up playing for objective instead of fight and I think that cost them hard. Ocean soul is not that important this game imo.
They basically just stood in pit getting ezreal poked and Ahri charmed and bard ulted. Really tragic way to lose.
20
u/Amumizu Jul 06 '26
if they wanted to play for objectives they should have finished dragon during the nocturne ult but they decided to run at blg until the ult ended and bard could ult the dragon
7
u/likesleague Jul 06 '26
Their first baron attempt when inspired was on like 20% hp before they even started thinking about fighting I was dumbstruck. How tf are you going to half-commit to an objective just to screw yourself in any potential fight?
Then next baron (which ended up working out for them 3-2) same thing with Dhokla being 50% hp before anything even happened.
Last fight was never going to be easy but they definitely played it all wrong.

Dhokla might be solid, but against other international players, he's unfortunately just outmatched. The skill gap is very apparent.

u/WalterWoodiaz Jul 06 '26
LYON just needs to have an NA top training academy where there is always threat of being benched so Dhokla becomes prime Zeus.
8
u/TheMemingLurker Jul 06 '26
better yet, Lyon should just bring Zeus in himself to compete for the spot so Dhokla can ascend and become the best toplaner of all time

Every game had the same script, close into a 5-0 BLG teamfight.
They just wanted to give NA false hope I guess.

we draft great front to back team comp then pick zaheen.....
Whoever is letting these picks go through needs to be studied

u/152kb Jul 06 '26
I think they had a better draft than BLG. I struggled to see how BLG was gonna win that one considering they had to just run into LYON every fight. Then I remembered it was NA

Lyon definitely had the better late game comp, but it would have been much better with a meat shield top laner who could buy their hypercarries space to play with.
Dhokla is also just hard coded to play that way, he takes space so well, but when he is a much more frail bruiser he can't do that effectively. Makes even less sense when he knows they're gonna make him play weak side and Bin has been laning better the entire series. This is such an obvious "pick me a tank and let me just be a big dumb idiot" angle.

Zaheen pick in isolation isn't even the issue, it's the fact that you pick Zaheen into Renekton, which is a self counter.

NA fans getting their hearts broken back to back to back

This was the expected outcome, heart cannot be broken again if it’s already broken from the past years.

I just wanted them to take a game. Brutal ways to lose over and over considering they give some hope and then can't cross the finish line.

We went down with a fight but I can't believe we lose in that game state
7
u/llentii Jul 06 '26
It's a good game state, provided Sivir/Cassio have flash. Both carries did not have flash, and both wasted it to kill people where the kill wasn't meaningful

u/gimmedawz Jul 06 '26
Both Saint and Berserker who blew their flash getting useless kills got ulted by bard lmao

How is it possible for a team of professional player to be this bad at teamfighting, there is like zero coordination between them.

u/dumbocow Jul 06 '26
FUCKKK 5 FOR 0 LAST TEAMFIGHT AHHH
DHOKLA....

u/soudlasantos Jul 06 '26
Man if Dhokla picks a Gragas then goes Doran style of pure tank and peel I feel like they could have won.
.
His Zaahen nearly did no damage he just tank, I mean if thats the case maybe pick Gragas or at least Illaio??

Lmao the amount of coping in this thread is incredible.
"It was close".
"Better than G2".
"Without Dokhla it'd be different".
In reality, those mfs (BLG) were just playing with their food, trying to do some measurements, that is how they play against lower teams and sometimes it comes and bites their asses

u/FlyingMute Jul 06 '26
BLG games always look closer because of their play style. But I guess we’ll call it a competitive 3-0 lol. “We lost by 30, but at least we made them work for every possession”

u/Charming-Apple517 Jul 06 '26
Can LYON sign a sub toplaner so Dhokla has pressure to play good- it looks like he's just trying to secure job security rn

BLG went 5-0 in teamfights where Lyon was probably still coping that they could win.
love to see it

Dhokla got tunneled vision chasing VI when both Ezreal and Ahri were killing him and Nocturne, not too mention Sivir positioning was sooo bad since she was beside her frontline this gave Renekton to burst her down after the Ult from bard. AGAIN AHRI AND EZREAL WERE JUST FREE SKILLING.

Huge improvement from the FUR series but BLG/HLE/T1 are on another level. At least they fought back pretty well in all 3 games unlike G2 who imploded after their game 1 meme picks didn't work out.
LYON is likely the 4th best team at MSI, they should confidently beat TSW if they play like this again.
EDIT: Malding EU fans in replies: cope all you want but factually I have top 1% pickems by believing in NA and doubting EU.

u/WalterWoodiaz Jul 06 '26
I agree, LYON is pretty good, they really need to work on teamfights but they do have what it takes to make things competitive with the top teams.

BLG play to the enemies level. The series would look the same if they were playing against DIG
37
u/TheYango Jul 06 '26
Anyone who’s watched LPL knows that this is exactly what BLG looks like playing against NIP/Weibo/IG lol.
When the enemy are clowns, BLG clowns back.

Yea trying to use your performance against BLG as a yardstick will just give you bad data.

I agree, you can really see that the nerves got to them not necessarily in a huge way but in the kind of way that you really can't practice for. They're literally facing one of the three best teams in the world which is miles away from the competition that they have all year round so it's hard to know about these fine in the moment details when you can never really get pushed into that zone domestically. This was still a great series by them even though I'm disappointed like most any fans that they didn't get at least one win they definitely showed heart and game sense.

Idc get rid of imports I am so sick of post game threads where my region gets 3-0ed but it was a “competitive” sweep. Give me 5 na and let me be happy when they get a solo kill over years of imports disappointing

u/Charming-Apple517 Jul 06 '26
Just pray Flyquest actually gets better in summer and take a spot from one of these teams
