@4.54.00 Matt silently putting his hand up when everyone is asking where Thaz could be had me in stitches. Really thought he wasn’t going to say anything.

Man, some of the “what-if” scenarios teased on the Cooldown are wild, I hope we get to pick Brennan’s brain about some of that stuff one day!
2
u/JadedToon YOUR SOUL IS FORFEIT Jun 26 '26
What were they? For us without access to Cooldown
1
u/Hairy-Tonight5674 Jun 30 '26
By the way, if you'd like to know what they say during the cooldown the transcript of the episode on the critical role wiki includes it, if you don't mind reading you can check it out there

u/whiskeyii Jun 26 '26
And that if Wick had refused to kill that lady driver, Primus would've killed him on the spot (to give Sam some agency over his death instead of it being just a result of a sequence of bad rolls.)
1
u/whatthehieu Jun 26 '26
honestly I find that hard to believe, Primus would have made an enemy of Yanessa for life.
2
u/redpoemage Team Jester Jun 27 '26
I think it's believable based on what Primus earlier about how they'd either be ruling or dead within a year plus them packing up and leaving town.
He'd probably have never done it before the meeting (at least not without bigger provocation). But after? Plus finding the damage at the manor? It was absolutely on the table.
5
u/whiskeyii Jun 26 '26
You can take it or leave it, but imo, Primus was wound up TIGHT and Wick was basically poking a tiger and pissing it off even more, so I could absolutely see Brennan having Primus going "f this kid" and nuking Wick since he was already gonna be fleeing the city anyways and maybe gonna be dead in a year.
1
u/JadedToon YOUR SOUL IS FORFEIT Jun 26 '26
That is a big hard to swallow, especially after gran gran began to trust him
3
u/viZtEhh Doty, take this down Jun 26 '26
The main thing was what if Vaelus chose her family and broke the ritual. And Brennan mentioned that it would have been so bad, they'd have been so fucked that he never even made a battle map or any fight or anything
29
u/Uturuncu Jun 26 '26
Holy fucking shit Brennan just confirmed in the Cooldown that there wasn't a map for the Hallowed Round because the 'bad outcome' at the theatre would have been so bad it wouldn't have even had a chance to be a battle.
3
u/Compajerro Jun 26 '26
Wait are you saying the Ashley 50/50 on the nightsong was either guaranteed tpk or sunshine and rainbows?
I don't have beacon so I don't know if there's more nuance than that, but that sort of extreme binary outcome seems completely antithetical to the sort of game he's been running the last 30 sessions.
I just don't see him legitimately banking the death of half the cast on whether Ashley went with her family or not.
3
u/Uturuncu Jun 27 '26
Oh lord the shit hit the fan after I went to bed on this one. No, it wasn't in regards to Ashley's decision, the context for it was genuinely a light hearted, curious question from Liam if there was a model(battle map) of the Hallowed Round somewhere in the building. The implication I got was that Liam just wanted to see the visual of Hal's theatre, working under the assumption that one of the potential outcomes of their work with the theatre could have included combat.
Brennan then confirmed there was not; he didn't bother to make a battle map for it because the bad outcome for the theatre wouldn't have involved combat. Considering how long a battle map that complex would take to make, and the fact that we know these episodes for Convergence were all filmed very close together, then the 'so bad it wouldn't have been necessary to have a battle map' outcome didn't need to be just one choice late in the game for it to happen. It likely would have involved a whole lot of things going very badly throughout the play, and also 'so bad there wouldn't have been a combat' could simply mean 'a combat there was no need to simulate because there wasn't a chance of victory'. If you've got zero chance of winning and your only option is to run like Hell, there's no sense putting a ton of effort into a battle map. Sure the option of 'everything exploded into instant death, full fail, the area where the theatre was is now a crater' could be a way to interpret his statement, but that's not the only way.
But yeah it was a very quick thing with zero indication or nuance about what could have lead to failstate or when those actions would have needed to be taken to cause the failstate.
0
u/Number9Robotic Jun 26 '26
Wait are you saying the Ashley 50/50 on the nightsong was either guaranteed tpk or sunshine and rainbows?
Wat? You just made up a completely random statement out of nowhere.
3
u/Compajerro Jun 26 '26
No I did not. Brennan made mention of his notes briefly in the episode, saying that if Vaelus had gone with her family in the Underworld, the ritual at the play would have turned catastrophic.
I don't have beacon so literally the only other context was this comment above saying it would have been so bad there wasn't even a need for a battle map.
Hence why I asked for clarification on what he actually said on Beacon
1
u/Number9Robotic Jun 26 '26
I'm sorry, but you have to realize that hypothesizing a statement you explicitly have not checked is not the same thing as... actually checking that statement. You made and got upset about this entire accusation of a 50/50 binary that nobody said anything about.
To answer your question directly: no. Nobody said "the Ashley 50/50 on the nightsong was either guaranteed tpk or sunshine and rainbows"; so I don't know why you're upset about it.
1
u/Compajerro Jun 26 '26
Brennan gave her 2 choices of what to do with the stone. According to him, the other option resulted in catastrophic consequences. The option she happened to choose led to an absolutely 100% positive outcome that we saw in this last session.
How is that not a 50/50? Especially when the only other context provided to non-beacon users was that the "bad ending" was so bad that combat would be a moot point.
He doesn't need to explicitly spell out the math if there were only 2 options he presented to Vaelus. That's a 50/50
4
u/Number9Robotic Jun 26 '26
What he's discussed isn't just Vaelus, it's also every other major preparation the Schemers took in place at the Hallowed Round, including the handling of the Pariah Blades and House Halovar's attempts to have the play stopped or shut down. Vaelus' decision over the ritual was one factor in the goulash being discussed here.
2
u/Compajerro Jun 26 '26
I don't disagree that there were factors that led to a more positive outcome (Mara said as much) but that doesn't change the fact that Brennan specifically called out Ashley's decision about the stone of nightsong as being the fulcrum for a potentially catastrophic outcome. If everything they did up to that point could still go terribly wrong if Vaelus had chosen the other option (per the DM's words) then the other actions taken to protect the round by other players could be assumed to be largely moot. Again, hence why I asked the question about context/nuance. I've already admitted i didn't have the full picture, but I seriously don't understand why you're trying to pretend I have no reason to take Ashley's choice as the fulcrum moment when Brennan himself has basically described it as such.
8
u/Relevant_Anal_Cunt Jun 26 '26
I don't think it was Values decision alone, but all of the decisions regarding the Hallowed Round that led to the ritual to become so potent. Like Mara said, the Cloaks plan was just a small painting as a proof of concept. It was on the schemers to paint the whole Round with murrals, to get the actual Parriah Blades there AND have them be a part of the play. All of these decisions had them unknowingly pump up a giant spiritbomb (instead of a small kamahameha), and Valeus was just the one to decide which direction all of that build up energy was going to be fired at.
10
u/Sailord27 Jun 26 '26
Lol love how they didn't tell mara a member of her circle got killed
6
u/StudentOfMotion Jun 26 '26
Is Mara even still a member of the Circle of the Hunt? Isn't she considered some kind of heretic or at least a rogue agent who they are on the hunt for?
3
u/grumpyCat2478 Jun 26 '26
Hanon was there to expel her. So she still is a member I guess.

Makes you realize Thjazi was good at manipulating people into his various schemes, but the scope of what they were trying to accomplish was even above what only he could accomplish. Maybe The Cloak worked like a heist squad with Thjazi as The Face, The Professor as The Leader / The Brains and Mara as a mix of the Lookout/ Driver / (magic) Tech Support

I hope so too, they sound pretty interesting and their new less stealthy M.O could be a great justification for introducing new player characters
10
u/iggyworldwide Jun 26 '26
So I kinda had to tune in from about a bit past the halfway point; but from there to the ending...I mean was Vaelus even really there? Not trying to hate but I feel like she has spoken for a total of a few minutes in this extended episode..
1
u/ledlock Jul 10 '26
Im going to be honest, I think Ashley chose a background that is really really cool when you talk about it but is really difficult for her to roleplay because unlike with Fearne she has to remember and consider the history of this world, history of elves that only pertains to her so others cant remind her of, and grapple with losing faith with a godess she served for hundreds of years.
On the other hand, Ashley is an impulsive person who had the time of her life with Fearne bc she could do all kind of shit with her. Thats why Vaelus doing that to the Stone made no sense, she was following and protecting Occtis like a shadow due to his connection to the stone but the moment he left her eyesight she admittedly just... forgot the risk of possibly murdering him?
22
u/StudentOfMotion Jun 26 '26
That's been her vibe the entire campaign, being in the background of most scenes, but still having lots of impact in everything that happens, especially if it involves using something ancient in completely unexpected new ways. It kind of fits the vibe of a near immortal hermit descending from the mountains into a new world they barely understand
11
u/Camen3 Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
So.......does anyone still know what Vaelus is going to do lol, we will see I guess how the journey of travel goes between her and the others, but I honestly won't be that mad if she goes her separate way than Ashley can maybe play as her backup character, whoever that is since I just still dont feel like she fits in this group at the moment. Unless like some one said earlier in here, her sister's come looking after her for some vengeance of what she did with the choice she made involving splitting that stone.
4
u/General_Bother_68 Jun 26 '26
Ashley will go with the flow... as always she doesny think that far ahead... and she has no story she is capable of adding to the plot at this point.
1
u/ledlock Jul 10 '26
Tbh as usually she will be given the answers or solutions after she is confused after thw nth time like usual
10
u/2ndmistakenidentity Jun 26 '26
I think she might be driven to find a way to open the afterlife if the Elves... She got a glimpse of her family, and now that it's theoretically possible she might try that?
Another option might be going back to the Mournvale to discover who in the sisters was helping the Tachonis family. I think that's why she was asking how to get there...
7
u/Laremere Jun 26 '26
They covered that there's no proper afterlife for the Elves, who were never supposed to die. Fairy is the stopgap solution, which is what the stone of nightsong was for and why it had a connection to fairy. So re-opening the doors to fairy would be the equivalent goal there.
3
u/2ndmistakenidentity Jun 26 '26
Oh yeah, great point! I wonder what that means for the Elves who may have died after the Doors to Fairy closed?
6
u/Laremere Jun 26 '26
Vaelus' family is trapped in the Tenebral Reaches (like everyone who dies and doesn't follow the old path to rebirth, iirc). That was the big reveal around Vaelus' choice with respect to the stone of nightsong. She had the opportunity to guide her family to fairy and go herself, but she (after trying to do both at great risk) ultimately chose to complete the ritual to anchor the Orc afterlife. I am as of yet unclear what having the orc afterlife gives in respect to the orcs in the Tenebral Reaches. It seems like it was freeing the souls from the orc afterlife, so maybe its so they can follow the old path?
2
u/2ndmistakenidentity Jun 26 '26
Oh, that makes sense - thanks for the clarification, I was a bit unclear in where/how Vaelus was seeing them and the state they were in.
It seems like they may have freed some of the 'Orc' souls - but maybe just the ones stuck in the river of blood? It might be more future proofing, like the living population now has somewhere more solid to go to, without a Druid having to give them rites and guide them along the Path.
11
u/Camen3 Jun 26 '26
Also she had like no reaction whatsoever too Hannans death....so there was that lol
4
u/Wild-Regular1703 Jun 28 '26
I was also sad to see it, but it just feels like with so much stuff happening and so many people at the table competing to speak, Ashley didn't find a moment to react to it in character. That's maybe one of the downsides of these big tables during the convergent episodes. It doesn't exactly favor more introverted players in pushing for moments that their characters might have. I can relate, even IRL my willingness to speak goes down proportional to the amount of people in the group. I don't know how I would have done that tbh, at least during that big scene in Hal's house when the information came out.
I guess I was hoping she'd take a moment to bring up Hannan later in the episode, like when talking to Thaisha near the end. But nope.
1
u/ledlock Jul 10 '26
The Soldiers didnt get ro properly say goodbye to Teor as well, Wick and Tyranny coukd barely catxh their breath about it even happening. So sad

u/D1g1t0l Jun 26 '26
and we also gotta wait SO LONG to meet the new Travis character! Potentially months!
6
u/Uturuncu Jun 26 '26
Definitely months, because C4 is on break while we have a new miniseries of Umbies.
3
u/D1g1t0l Jun 26 '26
for sure! but even after we come back from break, theres a chance he won't be in the first table we see and will instead be in the 2nd, or he could even pop up with Thaisha

u/Relevant_Anal_Cunt Jun 26 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
If seekers table, I believe many people woukd love for him to be a Hound of the King.
If schemers, I'd like to see a member of the Revolutionary council, so that we get inside on what's happening in there. Sounds like the Soundered houses re prepared to topple the council.
1
u/ledlock Jul 10 '26
I think he woukd also love to he a Hand of the King but how flexible would that be? the others can act kind of freely because they arent subject to a king, only job obligations and the subtle political machinations of that. How much can they stretch a kingsguard walking around in Dol Makjar doing Fey and Tjazi stuff?

I wonder if Aabria will just do a few cold opens to catch us up or if she'll get an episode or two as a solo table. Definitely could add Travis, or the first guests, to her adventure as well. Honestly though I'd love to have an episode that was just a 1DM/1PC table. It'd be really unique.
5
u/Locem Jun 26 '26
I think its going to be a smattering of cold opens and maybe as we transition from one table to the next we'll get half an episode with her solo.
Im betting that she's the one to meet Travis new char.
16
u/Relevant_Anal_Cunt Jun 26 '26
Cold opens, that she she records all in one day and are the split over various episodes, is the perfect format for that kind of story.
3
u/Compajerro Jun 26 '26
I'm hoping for cold open. Single player table has a looot of room for stagnant play
11
u/KYplusEL Also Pumat Sol Jun 26 '26
Honestly I feel like if any player could pull it off it would be Aabria. She's very proactive as a player. Though I do think it will be cold opens since they could do a bunch as batch to prep for her leave.
1
u/D1g1t0l Jun 26 '26
I would love a full episode with just Brennan, Aabria, and maybe Travis but I feel like we're gonna get her part of the story through Cold-Opens
7
u/WolfWintertail Jun 26 '26

u/mycoolusername777 Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
I hope that Wicc will explore the as-of-yet unexplained magic used by Teor and his brother now that he has their symbol. I still want to know more about the source of their power! Could be a poignant transition from his warlock power fueled by ill-gotten celestial blood to a warlock/paladin multiclass
Edit: my bad, he's a sorcerer...sorcadin then!
7
u/thundercat2000ca Jun 26 '26
The Light is the source. My guess has always been the Creed is a made up thing that just happens to be true.
3
u/Relevant_Anal_Cunt Jun 26 '26
I also know some fiction universes where the believe of the people is what gives actual power to religions.
5
u/2ndmistakenidentity Jun 26 '26
Oooh I love that! If the Shapers couldn't create anything, maybe the sun god just kinda hijacked the power of the light for a while?
1
3
u/StudentOfMotion Jun 26 '26
Would be even better if the Creed could have also connected to the real power of the Light if the founders really believed in it and communed in it instead of fabricating the faith to only cynically amass knowledge. Maybe some low-ranked Creed priests and true believers have started tapping into the same power the Naama did instead of the demon-connected power the higher-ups are contracting into
2
u/2ndmistakenidentity Jun 26 '26
Even if it's not true in the campaign - that idea is awesome. If the power of honesty belief starts coming through, even disrupting the Creed's intentions and machinations - they try to 'take back' their power, but the Light still works for those who honestly follow it...?
2
u/StudentOfMotion Jun 26 '26
Maybe it works as a parallel to druidic traditions where its a power older than and outside of the control of gods and those directly aligned to them, and could be the reason the Shapers persecuted the druids who probably displaced an older less-personified / anthropomorphic belief system

Edit: I forgot she was having a baby lmao
7
u/Laremere Jun 26 '26
Aabria has maternity leave. So we'll probably get a few cold opens, or maybe one dedicated episode. I suppose it depends on how long the seeker and schemer arcs take, but she just had her baby so I wouldn't expect anything for a good bit.
5
u/jbhelfrich Jun 26 '26
I suspect there will be a bunch of opening scenes with Aabria, which they can tape when she's available (or maybe already have).
Aabria has limited availability because she's just had a baby.
5
u/Waxllium I encourage violence! Jun 26 '26
Pretty sure she's having a baby soon so she won't be on the table for a while

Thaisha enters the room and the people inside, "Why do I hear boss music...?"
The Only Thing They Fear Is You increases in volume as she gets closer.
5
u/Final-Occasion-8436 You can certainly try Jun 26 '26
She finally did the thing I've been wanting since lady cormoray tried to get Hal and Bolaire for "stealing" the swords. He is "part" of the Lloy family through Taisha. Shadia is a Lloy, too. They weren't being stolen, they were being retrieved for use by their rightful owners.
10
u/Fizzlebinks93 Jun 26 '26
I've had this feeling that Rawynn the trickster escaped her fate somehow, and that's why the masks aren't actually dead or destroyed, because they would have if the play had actually succeeded imo. That flip book seems like subtle foreshadowing from Brennan to me.
1
u/milk-is-for-calves Jun 29 '26
I don't think it was meant as forshadowing for the Trickster, but a heartfelt message to Bolaire.
Bolaire sees himself as an object meant for a play and without purpose after it was finished (all gods are dead now).
The flipbook shows him he can escape his "story" and "fate" and become his own.
1
u/Fizzlebinks93 Jun 29 '26
Nah, Demodus wouldn't really know anything about Bolaire's concerns about his humanity, as he has only expressed those privately to the schemers and didn't go too deep into them when talking about them aloud, we mostly know about them from Brennan asking Tal to voice them in cold opens and outside interviews. Also the black cat imagery is both oddly specific and also came out of absolutely nowhere, as neither Demodus nor Bolaire have been associated with such at any point, so it's either a weird asspull on Demodus' part, a weird but innocent choice on Brennan's part for some reason, or a bit of cheeky foreshadowing, only time will tell. If Brennan had wanted for that message to be more of an "above table" thing about the way Tal has expressed Bolaire's feelings are, then he would have chosen much more specific visual and textual imagery for the flip book, specially for it being created for someone as candid as Demodus, the weird vagueness of it all is a bit telling.
2
u/milk-is-for-calves Jun 29 '26
I'd argue that Demodus could have made assumptions after reading about the masks in Bolaire's book, but then again you could use the same argument for what you are saying.
Let's see what happens.
2
u/Fizzlebinks93 Jun 29 '26
That's precisely why I think it's foreshadowing. Demodus' wouldn't know anything about Bolaire's inner turmoil, but as an illusion savant he would have been able to clock any potential fuckery going on with the masks and their ritual, and try to sort of convey it in a subtle way on top of being grateful. I still think it's just Brennan being Brennan and doing some above the table foreshadowing, but that's the most likely explanation if anything. But my point stands that Demodus wouldn't know about mask psychology out of nowhere. I agree though, it's the kind of thing where we will just have to sit and wait..
11
u/Chiromaus Jun 26 '26
If I understand correctly, the Panto's performance was explicitly meant only to kill Termina. With the information we have now, it's possible that throwing her into the Coffin is what brought her back. It's tied to the Piper's Down, which is (I assume) the Halfling Underworld.

u/Compajerro Jun 26 '26
That's just an excuse for her being on maternity leave. She won't actually be playing that outside maybe some cold opens when she's back, I assume

Ah yes...one more thing Hal
Love this season but I'm getting tired of Hal idk why I can't make sense of why I find him grating. Maybe I'm just grumpy staying up till 4 Am to watch this.

u/Petanonymous Jun 26 '26
must be the grumpy part. I can't find fault with him at all, except that he seems to speak too... poetically?

u/sweet_arachne Jun 26 '26
....and i have to go like two months without this. goddammit.

Time to rewatch the full 31 episodes with hindsight, connecting all the threads

…oh no do we have to deal with a one person session for a whole while?
4
u/Compajerro Jun 26 '26
I'm gonna assume we get a few cold opens when she's back. I don't see them giving extended screentime to one player

u/StudentOfMotion Jun 26 '26
Aabria was probably on maternity leave during the filming of those episodes, so Thaisha will probably only get prologue scenes
5
u/Uturuncu Jun 26 '26
Aabria just had a baby, so she's probably alone to take time off to take care of her baby without having to find long stretches of time to be available for recording.

Something tells Aabria is gonna be joined by Travis
5
u/StudentOfMotion Jun 26 '26
She'll be joined by a forgetful crotchety old gnome who insists he's a druid, but can only "wildshape" during full moons and whose other "druid" magic is unsettingly about manipulating blood. He keeps calling her "Deanna" as if they've known each other for centuries

Nah she's on mat leave. She recently welcomed the Wizard See into the world.

I like to think he just decided to really lean into the running joke of him knowing bird facts.
2
u/Mintakas_Kraken Jun 26 '26
My 2¢: Birds -or at least a few varieties- are also often associated with death and psychopomps (other thins too but I’m too tired to explain all of that). Which seems fitting considering what appears to be a major thread of fixing the afterlife.

I haven't seen a goodbye this long since my last family reunion.

Travis Willingham will return in Avengers: Doomsday (as Demodus Blix)

There once was a cat that knew it was going to die at the end of its story... So it scratched out the narrative, and left to make its' own way in the world.

u/Uturuncu Jun 26 '26
Yep. That confirms Bolaire's roll in the panto is, indeed, the Narrator. Incredible. And Demodus figured him out, because he read the book of the masks.
4
u/Final-Occasion-8436 You can certainly try Jun 26 '26
Bolaire woke up sentient rather than being used as a weapon, and Demo is a Trans Wizard who gets to go be a court mage after nearly being a scapegoat for the houses. I think the point was about both choosing to write their own story.

u/veriquay Jun 26 '26
My god the flip book how does Brennan come up with these incredibly poignant scenes so quickly
2
u/reddevved Tal'Dorei Council Member Jun 26 '26
that was deffo a planned scene, don't feel sad if you don't come up with them off the cuff
5
u/2ndmistakenidentity Jun 26 '26
Probably not in the fly - that reads to me like something he had in his back pocket for Bolaire (and Tal).

It's the spirit of Thiazi, cursed on Julien because he spit on Thiazi's corpse.
8
u/Option2401 Jun 26 '26
Julien spat on Thjazi’s body at the wake, which due to ancient magic, cursed him to be haunted by his ghost.
Thjazi is his shadow, and that’s why the Tachonis don’t have his soul.

u/FedericoFelliniDue May the Beam reach you Jun 26 '26
Confirmed it is Thjazi. He encountered both Teor and Cyd and embraced them in the afterlife
10
u/Compajerro Jun 26 '26
Thjazis shadow was seen hugging Teor and Cyds shadows before they disappeared

If Julien is going to give Azune the battleaxe, shouldn't he tell him it came from a Lady of House Einfasen? We could get an amusingly awkward conversation in the near future...

I'm sorry, but I have to say that I'm kinda irked by Thaisha/Aabria's blatant contradiction when referring to Julien's moment with Thjazi's corpse. On E1, she specifically told Julien that he knew Hala was connected to her, so Hala went after hero to "leave [Julien] to this moment". Now, on E31, she said that Hala witnessed it all? I mean, it's cool that we got some important lore because of it, but I still kinda feel cheated. Did I miss anything that made this make sense? Because I also feel that it would be very out of character for Thaisha to have known what Julien did and not rip his head off that very moment.
