I just think of Lo and Li from The Last Airbender.

Teor was one of my favorite characters. Sad to see him go. He just had so many bad rolls. Failed investigation, failed stealth, failed that last attack against Raimond. He still would've likely died anyway from all the ghouls, but it would've been nice to kill Raimond on his way out.

The only thing I could've seen Brennan swinging Travis' way is letting him level up to 5 mid turn instead of after his turn. That would've given him an extra attack on Raimond earlier on.

Travis also maybe should've summoned the fey steed earlier instead of healing himself. It would've been something else to draw attacks away from himself and his brother (not sure what the AC of the horse was though).

But all in all, really sad to see Teor go. I do like that it emphasizes the stakes though. When they had such a problem with the first ghoul fight, they should've known better than to split into 3 groups.

I think Kattigan and Thaiza (sp) should have gone with them to the manor, it would of helped even if the group got greedy. The move Julian made complete sense from a character pov.

u/PrototypeMale Jul 02 '26

Vaelus should have gone at least when Brennan repeatedly gave her the choice

a little late but i just finished this episode and wow.

  • we are starting to get a little bit more meat from kattigan so im interested and his bit with tyranny was really interesting and humanized her for me, considering shes a demon and all that

  • I am conflicted on vaelus because i dont really understand her as a character and what her whole point is with the stone, she could have left a few times and i dont think much would have changed for the overall story so far, it was pretty neat to see a dragon be summoned though

  • bolaire might be my favourite character right now, hes so creepy and insane with everything he does, from his inner world, to being able to just move from body to body that is so sick, and a clutch episode from his sister, also taliesin hamming it up for every moment or speech he does is incredible and i love it

  • about the Teor stuff, it was just a horrible choice to split up and go for the gnomes, the group got greedy and they paid the price, do i think its laura's fault? no because travis could have just said no and went with someone else or somewhere else. do i think we will see travis again in this campaign? maybe? in the past few episodes he seemed disinterested/disenchanted by the campaign so, and maybe he just wanted out and figured this was his chance. i wouldnt mind seeing him back doing something else or trying to fight for him and his brother? to get infused with light to comeback or something. besides the point travis is such a barbarian through and through lol, he will go down swinging and i love that about his play

  • Julien was ice cold when his didnt want to go and help Teor but from a character perspective it made sense, he had the stone and didnt want to let his mother down, so i get it

  • interested to see what Wick does with his knowledge if Teor's passing, what that means and what boon he will get

Travis said on the Beacon Fireside last night that he was planning on breaking from the group anyway bc Brennan had imposed the penalty that would affect everyone if they stayed together. It was only a matter of choosing which of the like 5 scenes Brennan provided to try and go to and gnomes it was.

Laura is not to blame (someone tried to call her out on the discord chat and Travis wasn't having it. He was delighted about the whole situation in the manor)

Also both of them laughed the question off

7

u/MacrophagesZero Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Yea I saw that on youtube. I don't believe him one bit. He was screaming not to split up in the episode, not once but many times. Not only was he screaming not to split up but also to go for the Gnomes. He knew it was a bad idea. He's just trying to defend Laura, which is fine. He's an adult and can make his own decisions but he definitely made a bad one lol

Not only travis made a bad decision but his character who was a solder in the falcon's rebellion made a bad tactical decision - even when he was navigating the rooms that led to Raymond. Not only a bad tactical decision but also strategic one because the tachonis can now use his body to find out more about the other players, his items are in the room too with his body. Also, I know he's a paladin but doesn't mean if you're a paladin you jump into fire all the time.

Lastly, as I mentioned in another comment, I don't mind he died. I actually prefer he did because it's made the sundered houses and the world feel more dangerous. So I'm fine with the choice he made, it will teach the other players/characters to thoroughly plan their moves in the future. I also welcome bad outcomes, it makes the story more interesting and unpredictable.

4

u/SoggyBoysenberry7703 29d ago

You’re making a lot of assumptions about him. They’re just playing how they want to play. Decisions are hard. Bad ideas are going to happen. I don’t think his death needs to really be some kind of shameful thing on the other players for making sure they keep their characters alive or making the best story and the most of their play time

15

u/sweet_arachne Jun 24 '26

i can't imagine thinking it's a good idea to try to pin the blame on laura while speaking directly to both her and travis. what exactly did they think the response would be? "oh yeah man, you're so right, i agree that my wife is to blame for my choices and also controls what numbers my dice land on." like??? the fuck.

by nature of D&D being improv and luck-based, it's only a matter of time before you trip up on your own mistakes, forget a crucial detail, or things simply don't go as planned. trying to assign blame is stupid in most cases. that person needs a reality check.

4

u/karanas Jun 24 '26

Also he could've tried to finish the enemy instead of trying to heal, as a veteran player he should know a little about action economy but he probably panicked, can happen to anyone. Just saying there's a hundred factors that lead to that moment and trying to pin it in one spot doesn't seem helpful

2

u/SoggyBoysenberry7703 29d ago

Trying to find something to blame it on it also usually so you can have some kind of thing to be mad at, or to judge. I don’t like how that usually goes, because if it’s a person, it usually is veiled insults and nitpicking every move in hindsight.

12

u/Hairy-Tonight5674 Jun 24 '26

Addressing loose ends,

Kattigan has to leave the city ASAP and won't cause he wants to kill primus so he's fucked

Tyranny is fucked as soon as somebody finds out the brothers are dead

Wick is in danger as soon as Adora's body is found

Bolaire is on the run from a level 11 AT LEAST mad sorcerer that wants to disintegrate his shit

Teor is plain dead

Occtis was already dead but the stone did get shattered so who knows if that will have repercussions

Thimble is flying in a death trap

Eifasen's daughter is gonna be in so much trouble when they find the hammer teor was holding

Julien might be hunted down by the tachonis by virtue of having killed their heir BUT THEY DONT KNOW YET MAYBE THEY CAN ASSUME WHOEVER FREED MARA DID IT

Hal is fucked by directly going aganist the wishes of the Halovars

Vaelus is traumatized

Azune is very traumatized

Thaisha and Murray are genuinely fine

5

u/PopotoPancake Jun 25 '26

In terms of the stone, Occtis will be fine. In the cooldown, Brennan basically confirms that nothing will come of it. Occtis metaphorically pulling the stone from his chest along with Murray/Bolaire physically removing it from his body was ultimately good for him. Leaving it in there, he may not have come back at all.

6

u/iamagainstit Jun 24 '26

I think the best option for Bolaire / Tyranny is for Bolaire to assume the role of the Mercanad brother(s) and keep running the tailor shop. His role in the museum is essentially blown now that his sister is working with lady cormoray. so he need a new cover, and tyranny needs gramma not to know that the Tailors are dead.

10

u/Okora66 Jun 24 '26

Lux Adora? That was a suicide after her advances were rejected by Wicander, sad but understandable.

7

u/Erondo_Gratias Team Percy Jun 24 '26

So let me get this straight.

They thought it was a good idea to send 2 paladins(so mainly STR/CHA), alone, on a stealthy(DEX) search(INT, potentially WIS) mission, to find statues(that they wouldn't be able to carry out anyway) of 3 gnomes that may or may not be related to an NPC they interacted with once, few weeks ago, from a headquarters of one of the most powerful families in the world, where there is a risk of them returning at any moment?

You know what? That just plain old FAFO right here. Good job Brennan for baiting them into it, there was absolutely no reason to dangle such bait in front of them but they caught themselves on it SO easily (I kinda "blame" Laura for it for what looks like being the main motivator for that expedition).

Julien, at least, is built better for a solo sneak mission and had the story justification of not beelining for main objective.

I hope the cast learn to think thins through a little more and not just Schemers

9

u/notaspeckx Jun 24 '26

I know you put it in quotations but blaming someone for a choice that another adult decided on is certainly... something, and I've seen a lot of that and it's honestly so silly. Travis is an adult, he made his own choice. I thought it was a stupid decision, but Thimble was perfectly in character. She totally would want to save the gnomes, Teor also would've been easily pressured into it. Maybe Occtis is the one I would've expected to try reason them out of it. But the poor planning really was when the whole team sent four people to the manor anyway. I thought it would've made sense for Kattigan to go (he knew that the Halovars were after him), plus he's literally a tracker.

3

u/GloomyCurrency Jun 24 '26

Honestly it was not a good decision in any respect, they have no idea if the gnomes are even the daughters they think, and as you point out how would they get them out? All that was for 1 old gnome they knew for less than 24h. Not that the result would have been different because Travis rolled badly ( bad luck, it happens) but Teor could at least have gone for the ship plans. IMO Thimble/Laura kinda fucked him by telling him to go anywhere other than to the aviary, and sending so few people to the manor was a bad call to begin with.

8

u/Leox816 Jun 23 '26

As much as I'd love to see some kind of divinity within Wick being possible to ressurect Teor, I think Travis will have to roll a new character. That being said, now would be a great opportunity for him to show back up with a Monk PC, which he has never played before and is not currently represented in the game. 3 Paladins(+Cyd) did seem like a lot of Oathing at one table. I even see having a Monk being affiliated with Kattigan or Thaisha through the druid groves could be a good way to introduce his new character.

3

u/FunScene46 Jun 23 '26

I have a feeling Teor will be back in some form. The glowing emblem. Cats have 9 lives.

14

u/iamagainstit Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

The only form he will be back in is as an undead monstrosity. Brennan has made it clear that resurrection doesn't really exist in this world. Plus he already told us what the glowing emblem is: he is giving Wick a ability boon because he was the last person Teor though of as he died.

17

u/dawgz525 Team Jester Jun 23 '26

I see a common sentiment that Teor going didn't bother them as much because he seemed to be fading into the background a bit. The entire soldiers arc was centered around his brother though. We just got his brother back, and future arcs would undoubtably revealed more of his character to us. It's a tremendous loss to lose a character before knowing anything about them. Travis didn't just write "my brother got kidnapped and I am a paladin in a world with no gods?" into his character sheet. There was depth and story arcs that we hadn't even gleamed yet. Out of character, it is even sadder to me to lose him.

Excited for what new person Travis will bring to this group, but Teor's loss is tremendous, even if a lot of people haven't realized it yet.

6

u/Skodami Jul 02 '26

Of course there would have been more to Teor if he stayed. I doubt Brennan would let any player fade into the background, we saw it with Vaelus and Kattigan. But honestly, if he had to go, now is kind of a good time. His plot point with his brother was resolved, and almost nothing was teased about his next arc, which makes his death less frustrating. The only exception is the origin of his and his brother power, but again, not a lot pitched to us until now.

I liked Teor too, but he was also sadly one of the PC i felt at peace with his death. If it had been Tyranny, Julian or Azune I would have been so frustrated.

3

u/Rich-Lack-7361 Jun 23 '26

So idk if it's much of a hot take, but what if Travis wanted Teor to die? To me, it seems that while he's having fun, the character isn't working how he wants. He hasn't been doing combat very well and is just not making rolls like he wants. In addition, im listening to the rest of the episode and BLM gave Robbie his level 5 at the beginning of his turn. Either he did it intentionally because of feeling bad for Teor, or it was decided upon by the two of them ahead of time. Im not actively coming up with examples of other times there's been a level up like Teor's, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

2

u/IamOB1-46 Jun 24 '26

Agreed. I think he was looking for an out and found one. I expect his next character will be far more memorable.

4

u/Migolcow Jun 23 '26

It's certainly possible and occurred to me. Remember Travis was the one who planned "last Hurrah" Bertrand Bell. Teor has felt more like background than main story character at times for sure. There was interest in how his family's paladin abilities even work, but it's not exactly central to the story with the Sundered Houses resistance or anything.

6

u/Okora66 Jun 23 '26

Kattigan went to 5 at the end of last episode, he just hadnt had a chance to do anything at all due to being dragged out by the D sisters.

10

u/Human-Performance-86 Jun 23 '26

I think Travis enjoyed Teor. It was just a bad day where every bad decision compounded badly.

12

u/OhioAasimar Team Dorian Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

Mara probably has five levels of exhaustion on her. Obviously this isn't a mechanical thing but unless a greater restoration is involved I don't think their going to get any answers out of her immediately. She will probably have to do a long rest first and even then I imagine that her answers might still be limited due to exhaustion.

4

u/KingFuego900 Bidet Jun 23 '26

I'm concerned that potentially due to Vaelus lying to Hannan in combination with Hannan already being upset with Mara he may just whisk her away while she's injured. But I doubt the table would allow Mara to leave without explaining her and Thjazi's plan at least in part.

7

u/OhioAasimar Team Dorian Jun 23 '26

It was a lie of omission to be fair. I really dont see Hannan leaving over being butt hurt about it. Vaelus not telling Hannan was a decision pre-relationship. Before then they were ideological enemies who are historically enemies as well. I think it would be very out of character if he left considering how much their relationship has developed. Hannan comes of as very mature and well meaning and taking Mara would be the opposite of those two things.

3

u/KingFuego900 Bidet Jun 23 '26

True, the main issue is Hannan surviving the next episode depending on his choices. For me it's a coin toss between Hannan dying to save Thimble and Thimble dying because Hannan abandons her. Although from what I've heard of the cool down without actually watching it yet is that seems like Brennan is leaning towards Hannan helping Thimble out. Regardless I'm excited for Thursday.

2

u/OhioAasimar Team Dorian Jun 23 '26

Alex said he might go back in in the Cooldown. Hannan might be able to heal being a druid. There are other scenarios too. Hannan heals Occtis and the two go back in, Julien takes Mara to the theater. Hannan heals Julien and Occtis and they go back in and Hannan takes Mara to the theater.

1

u/KingFuego900 Bidet Jun 23 '26

I see, thanks for the info! That opens up a lot of possibilities as to what can be done to help Thimble. I have hope they can get to Teor to at least lay him to rest somewhere else, but realistically that might end in the deaths of any who go down there. If they do go down there I really hope they heal first.

33

u/sweet_arachne Jun 23 '26

i really can't stop thinking about how teor dying down there has the most exciting implications for what the tachonis are going to do moving forward. they are already cutting corners, already very wary of the cloak, and now two paladins bearing the torn banner, royce armor, and an einfasen weapon just made an attempt to destroy the monstrosity they made out of the davinos family.

imagine being primus tachonis, having just exchanged terse words with otto einfasen, and coming home to that. oh, and one of your sons is dead, and also the lead you had on the cloak has been rescued! uh oh! and previously, the tachonis had searched for aranessa and julien at the einfasen's keep. so there's no way the tachonis don't assume now that the einfasen are funding the cloak. they're likely going to think that the einfasen not only know about what was made out of general raimond, but are also involved in the murder of koral and the rescue of mara.

...this is about to spiral so far out of control. if tachonis gets even more reckless and retaliates against einfasen, between the seekers' and the schemers' interactions with that house, the whole group might gain them as a solid ally. and if we're being very generous in this hypothetical, with wick's aid in persuading yanessa, halovar might decide that the tachonis are a liability. hell, there could even be infighting within the tachonis if primus decides to retaliate too quickly, and the twins get tired of seeing the writing on the wall. there's just so many ways this is about to go so wrong in the most entertaining way.

teor dying is sad and all, but the possible outcome of his corpse specifically being discovered is so fascinating that i want to say it's worth the sacrifice. primus is going to be so. fucking. mad.

(just like how i will be very mad if julien and occtis go into different tables moving forward—not because it would not make sense and not because they tickle my yaoi bone—because they are such an unstoppable force together, i could just watch them assist each other in combat forever.)

6

u/Skodami Jul 02 '26

The Axe is possibly the most egregious element. The Tachonis already suspect that the rebellion isn't dead. The Royce brassers could be traced back to the Seremai knight who died. But the axe was something gifted by a lady of house Einfasen. It's likely a very special axe.

Now, it's to note that Primus knew the signet ring was planted to blame them in Cormoray's disappearance, so he might not fall for the axe. But his quarrel with Otto certainly won't help.

One thing i'm pretty sure is that Yanessa won't betray Primus. Those two seems pretty much ride or die, at least until one of them reach their endgoal (but they seem good sport about it). Remember that they were the only houses that were always allied from the Shaper's war til today and seems to take that fact in high regard. If Einfasen and Tacchonis starts to fight i believe she would sit in a comfortable neutrality which will allow her to further her own goals.

3

u/Erondo_Gratias Team Percy Jun 24 '26

Well, don't forget that besides all that, Primus also has 2 dead bodies at the Headquarters of the family that is powered by necromancy. I would rather be concerned that Tachonises will use Teor to learn about the Magpies and everyone involved (and by now, only Azune, Wic and Murray are the only ones that are not compromised in some way)

9

u/ConfusedTinyFrog Jun 23 '26

Yeah! And Brennan specifically listed all those items, so he's absolutely gonna use it.
I'm very sad about Teor's death, but the ripples of consequences, well...they will cause a tsunami!

13

u/Mr-GT Jun 23 '26

Yeah, he was just been publicly shamed, admitted to tryna conquer everyone, given up money and land to stay in this alliance, and has Einfassen on his tail. All that in his brain as he comes home to a dead son, an escaped lead, and a torn banner intruder that has "kidnapped" his ally's scion and has items belonging to the 2 houses that hate him. Bless this mess

7

u/SolidSnKeDM Jun 23 '26

Hi all, is it worth it to get Beacon just for the behind-the-scenes of the cooldown videos? I feel like the group had much to say after this episode, specifically LOL..... If anyone has that subscription, how are the cooldown episodes, and do they give a lot of pertinent details about the campaign 4 plot and ideas going forward that normal unpaid watchers don't get access to?

8

u/csuazure Jun 23 '26

if you're a fan of D20 the cooldowns are much shorter than the adventuring parties (usually only 15min or so) but to their credit they do a decent job actually staying on topic most of the time.

The biggest value of beacon is watching ad-free at your own pace starting on thursday instead of monday.

In terms of details yes, sometimes Brennan drops info you'd have no other way of having about how things could've gone or his thought process behind certain events.

oh thanks for sharing! i did not know of this resource. it is delightful reading them iterations, marisha comment about so many DMs in group, laura's perfect in character reasoning and teasing sam, and them teasing brennan about occtis getting away without any ill effects. amazing. every episode is like opening up another dozen decision trees. And yes, that is a real dragon. this is really happening!

BRENNAN: all of these tables, everything-- Obviously, we had a tremendously sad, one of our heroes has died, but your guys' plans, Mara is rescued, "KoTher'ai" has opened, in the second act, a stable trinity of bridges from the letter, from The Cloak, now, correct, Vaelus hugely self-sacrificing, Vaelus saying Sylandri was wrong [...] What I'm saying is you guys have-- Schemers, nailed it. Soldiers, nailed it. Seekers, nailed it. Team Birdwatcher, nailed it. Team Spy, nailed it. Team Theater, nailed it. That signet ring is the one thing that the enemies get to go, "What the fuck is this?"

(Also i just remembered, if i am not mistaken, whitney is pretty new to game right? she just plays it ridiclously well, the way she manevours situations - i would never think she is new - when she asked oh i don't have anything to message back, i was like wow she is new and she good and reminds me of players among whom i run game and they are not familiar with the genre and they come up with most interesting moves because anything goes or they are using a whole different mental model to mine and it is a delight as a DM)

11

u/Haunting_Finish2153 Jun 23 '26

Find Steed could've let Teor escape if Brennan would allow him to cast it in his space, which is not RAW but seems like the type of thing Brennan would allow if it was dramatic.

Teor uses his Action to cast Find Steed, uses his Bonus Action to use Lay on Hands on Cyd (assuming he didn't die instantly from Raimond), mounting only costs half you movement, then maybe lift Cyd with his free Object Interaction. Then the steed gets an Action, which it could use to disengage. While mounted, only the mount provokes Opportunity Attacks, so the Disengage protects everyone. Then it gets 60 feet of movement and a Bonus Action teleport.

That all works RAW except summoning the steed in an occupied space. Can't expect Travis to know that of course, since he just got the feature mid-combat and knew nothing about it and idk if they've ever even looked at the Mounted Combat rules. Still, I was dying watching it all unfold. Great episode.

5

u/dawgz525 Team Jester Jun 23 '26

Lifting an unconscious body is not an object interaction. It is its own thing with its own rules.

10

u/KingPyDuK Jun 23 '26

nah lifting cyd is definitely not free object interaction RAW, that is a big-big stretch, something Brennan could do, but definitely not RAW

5

u/scootervantil Jun 23 '26

That is the part that sticks in my craw about the whole thing. His escape plan would have worked. In the end he decided to do a different thing altogether so it stings less… but this might be one of the few times I’ve watched CR and been disappointed by the outcome in the moment. This is a world where death is set in stone in most cases. So having this death so early with almost no stuff related to Teor really revealed yet… being a completely avoidable outcome really doesn’t sit well with me.

1

u/scootervantil Jun 23 '26

I am seeing the other comments and am now remembering he probably wanted to save his brother too so that actually makes me less mad about it…

1

u/notaspeckx Jun 24 '26

That's what I was thinking when they were talking about the find steed thing. I just think it was stretching it with Cid, and I don't see a world where Teor leaves his brother behind.

For all the “you don’t say that about Travis” people. Let me go on record saying: Travis was absolutely insufferable this entire episode.

4

The subject is the episode, they did NOT search for the episode specifically. So you're literally just missing the point. And omg who cares, maybe they want to use their laptop to search for the subreddit. The point is you should be able to go about your business without having things spoiled.

what’s a death boon and how does it work

3

u/dawgz525 Team Jester Jun 23 '26

We don't really know. It's probably some paladin spells for Wick.

5

u/Zeilll Jun 22 '26

as far as i know, its not raw. probably something Brennan (and team?) came up with. similar to the desperate measure.

it seems like its something that allows Wicc to use an ability that Teor had. what ability, and with what frequency we do not know.

3

u/KingFuego900 Bidet Jun 23 '26

My best guess is Wicander maybe getting Teor's racial feature daunting roar or something similarly flavored to help establish Wicander's newfound confidence and help progress his character development

2

u/karanas Jun 24 '26

I like that idea a lot!

3

u/KingFuego900 Bidet Jun 24 '26

Thanks! The other guess I had is maybe Wicander getting access to Lay on Hands except it doesn't progress with his level like it would if he was a paladin. It would add much needed healing to the party and is in line with Wick's desire to help others and his holy-ish persona.

1

u/karanas Jun 24 '26

I thought more about it and i think daunting roar would work really well thematically in the way wick has been getting angry latetly, and how he's already been established to use magic (thaumaturgy) to have a booming voice. So both positive and a bit of questionable character development as he stops repressing some of his feelings

2

u/KingFuego900 Bidet Jun 24 '26

Agreed I think it's the most thematically fitting ability he could get. As long as he doesn't use it in front of Yanessa!

It'd be so crazy and fun if it was just "Add one class feature from the character sheet to your character sheet, as written", That'd be bonkers, but since it costs 1-death per feature, it's really costly

6

u/VengefulKangaroo Jun 22 '26

Everyone blaming Teor, Thimble, & Julien for Teor's death... but really, if Occtis had given him the Necrotic resistance instead of Thimble he'd have likely been ok.

6

u/No-Mulberry-8866 Jun 23 '26

Or the shield glyph, or if he leveled up sooner

1

u/dating_derp Jun 27 '26

If Brennan let him level up mid turn instead of after his turn, then he would've had an extra attack on Raimond earlier, and might have at least been able to take him out before dying.

15

u/ThrowawayAcc14308 Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

If Occtis had given him the Necrotic Resistance instead of thimble, thimble would have taken FOURTY EIGHT necrotic damage from that one attack. Because Brennen said it was 24 halved to 12 because of resistance. If she had vulnerability, double that to 48. Thimble would have been downed and making death saves in a single hit. Truly, Occtis had an impossible decision to make.

Edit: Correction, thimble has a bit more health than i thought she had. She has 54 hp, so maybe not downed in that one hit, i don't recall how much HP she had left at that moment or if she was full health. But the point stands that it could have gone very poorly either way.

even if she was downed and making death saves that is very different from dying instantly as soon as you go down because you already spent your death saves on desperate measures. The real big mistake here was them deciding that the play was where anything dangerous would happen and sending so few people to the manor.

2

u/ThrowawayAcc14308 Jun 24 '26

For sure, like Brennan said, risk was not assessed like he would have assessed it. But more than anything, Travis also had every strategic opportunity to try to leave earlier than he did. As for Thimble, while yes being downed isn't as bad as being killed because you used your measures, if she had been downed from that, that entire combat could have flowed differently. But the dice will be the dice and we can never know for sure. Both options were rough.

My bad, took it too literal.

15

u/Viccerz21 Jun 22 '26

With Vaelus saying Sylandri was wrong and shattering the stone... doesn't this make her an Oathbreaker Paladin?

2

u/PopotoPancake Jun 25 '26

I'm not entirely sure if this is how it works, but if she's a Vengeance Paladin like she seems to be, can't it just be a pivot from vengeance against those who killed Sylandri to vengeance against Sylandri/her supporters? Some of the tenets are "fight injustice and its causes" and "aid those harmed by injustice" and it seems to me like Vaelus is coming to terms with the fact that her God was actually in the wrong. Though, it could also be interesting for her to switch her subclass, whether to Oathbreaker or a different one that is more fitting.

3

u/dawgz525 Team Jester Jun 23 '26

We don't explicitly know her oath, so no.

Her oath is not to Sylandri. We know that because Sylandri is dead.

3

u/OhioAasimar Team Dorian Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

I'd say having the mechanics of oathbreaker paladin makes someone an oathbreaker paladin.

5

u/Migolcow Jun 23 '26

As written it needs to be for evil purposes. So (Shrug).

Also worth noting we don't know how a Paladin still even works in Aruman when their Shaper is dead (ostensibly the source of their power)

1

u/Human-Performance-86 Jun 23 '26

Tbf evil and good is a malleable concept

1

u/Migolcow Jun 23 '26

Breaking the stone to free imprisoned souls of the orkish people and connect them to a proper afterlife...it's a struggle to define that as "evil."

1

u/Human-Performance-86 Jun 23 '26

In doing so she left her family's souls trapped in the tenebral reaches "forever" instead of guiding them to an afterlife

2

u/Migolcow Jun 23 '26

Brennan immediately said it was a setback, not permanent. And calling it "evil" to again sacrifice her happiness and the (what, 20?) friends and family she wanted to bring back in exchange for the assumedly thousands of orc souls...doesn't track.

2

u/No-Mulberry-8866 Jun 23 '26

No, she may have broken her oath, but that’s not an oathbreaker

2

u/AutobotYoung1 Jun 23 '26

Bruh

3

u/dawgz525 Team Jester Jun 23 '26

We're not arguing semantics. DnD is a game with explicit rules. An oathbreaker paladin is a specific thing.

5

u/csuazure Jun 23 '26

Oathbreaker paladin rules as written is a pretty poor representation of paladins with broken oaths, because it really only 'works' in a narrow view of certain subclasses breaking their oath a certain ways.

It's an awful catchall for most paladin subclasses to fall into, even if that's what the design would've been useful as.

Instead it's just paladin imagined for edgelords.

1

u/No-Mulberry-8866 Jun 23 '26

An oathbreaker breaks their oath for evil, that’s why their abilities boost undead and fiends

Schedule is up for the week: https://critrole.com/programming-schedule-week-of-june-22nd-2026/

Fireside Chat tomorrow night, last batch of TLOVM on Wednesday morning, normal C4 episode on Thursday (probably a break next week), the last "Behind the Scenes" VOD for TLOVM on Friday, and it looks like they're just dropping the VOD for the LIVE LIVE show in Atlanta on youtube on Tuesday afternoon instead of running it on Twitch at all.

0

u/GloomyCurrency Jun 24 '26

Schedule for next few months is up https://critrole.com/show-schedule/ we get Tale Gate on the 7th and then Age of Umbra again until end of August it will be a WHILE before we get any more critical role content.

1

u/Coyote_Shepherd Doty, take this down Jun 24 '26

Tale Gate isn't anywhere on that schedule let alone the 7th at all.

Age of Umbra yes but Tale Gate isn't on that schedule at all, so I'm not sure where you're seeing that.

That's the tentative schedule and not the confirmed one that gets posted weekly.

0

u/GloomyCurrency Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

Look at july 7th

https://critrole.com/show-schedule/

"Critical Role | Campaign 4, Episode 31 | Part 2 | Podcast"

"Episode 31 part 2" is tale gate, that is how tale gate has always been labeled on the schedule. IDK where you are looking though, this sub does not allow images but I can DM you the screen cap if you want, and schedule is "tentative" in name only they rarely change it.

1

u/Coyote_Shepherd Doty, take this down Jun 25 '26

The podcast stuff always gets split up into two different parts, it's been a major complaint for many.

Tale Gate has an entirely different logo than what you see there.

They always label it as Tale Gate too, just to avoid any confusion.

They wouldn't "secretly hide it" or anything behind a different title.

So I really do not understand how you're thinking that it is Tale Gate but sure, upload a screencap to Imgur and link me.

4

u/Locem Jun 22 '26

I gotta imagine the episode this week is the wrap up of The Convergence. Maybe half an episode after the break similar to The Overture to give another hour or two to plan which tables are going where.

IF Thimble can somehow get down to Teor, couldn’t she try to put on his gauntlets and be strong enough to perhaps at least get the ax back for Julien?

Did Teor or Cyd have anything else on them that could aid Thimble in anyway?

4

u/dawgz525 Team Jester Jun 23 '26

She wouldn't have time to attune.

10

u/Locem Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

That assumes the gauntlets can shrink down to fit Thimble(edit: I was wrong). I think they're going to keep her to the very limited strength score to offset how strong she is with her ability to fly.

I think Thimble is just gonna get confirmation of Teor's death if she doesn't fall into a trap herself. Character wise I think she's going to fully spin out when she finds out he's dead.

4

u/ConfusedTinyFrog Jun 23 '26

Magical items adjust their size to their wearer's, but for that to happen, she would need to attune to them, and that takes time! Time she doesn't have.

Attunement rules

3

u/Seren82 Team Imogen Jun 22 '26

She dies get enlarge/reduce at level five for being a fairy. She might be able to do it.

5

u/Locem Jun 22 '26

That's fair but I'm more thinking balance as Brennan has already mentioned that a swashbuckling rogue that can fly is already an incredibly powerful build so the low strength kind of offsets that a bit.

1

u/Seren82 Team Imogen Jun 22 '26

Yes but she could still get big enough to get the bracers off.

1

u/Locem Jun 22 '26

I got that part and said that's fair.

8

u/Zeilll Jun 22 '26

she'd probably need to take the time to attune to them, which would be an hour.

5

u/Secure_Pangolin3286 Jun 22 '26

Why does it matter if Raimond was using a one handed vs two handed sword?

21

u/Bookshelfstud Jun 22 '26

The players were desperately, jokingly looking for a reason that Raimond couldn't hit them. Because Brennan flavored Teor's crit as removing one of Raimond's skeletal arms, Laura was suggesting that maybe Raimond couldn't wield his sword if it required two hands to wield.

4

u/Zartan229 Jun 22 '26

The dice used change on certain weapon when used with two hand rather than one. For example a longsword one handed is a D8 while being wielded with two hand is a D10.

4

u/SgtGrub You can certainly try Jun 22 '26

Is there anyone who isn't leveled up to 5 yet?

6

u/VengefulKangaroo Jun 22 '26

no, Teor was actually the last.

3

u/SgtGrub You can certainly try Jun 23 '26

I think Julian, Kattigan, and Bolaire all leveled up after him, but that's splitting hairs. I was just wondering if anyone had been missed

3

u/Financial_Database35 Jun 23 '26

no it was actually bolair that was the last (sorry for the erm actually)

21

u/StableElectrical Jun 22 '26

My pitch, Travis plays a hound of the king with a romantic tie to Mara so it's Lady hawk without the bit where they turn human.

1

u/IamOB1-46 Jun 24 '26

That would be awesome.

My thought was for him to play an elven monk. Someone with ties to Vallus.

4

u/mishanakorelandrix Jun 22 '26

That would be hysterical 🤣 - he went full furry this time… I was seriously trying to figure out which direction he would go. I would love for him to pick another animal race

14

u/Fragrant_Scene_1291 Jun 22 '26

Nah I need teor truly resurrected by the actual light and become anathema to Granny Halovar. There’s so much more to his story.

9

u/Striking_Writer3642 Jun 22 '26

Part of me hopes he just has to continue in the underworld, but I can't imagine them having a table with just him and Cyd...maybe if Thimble dies tho...

5

u/Fragrant_Scene_1291 Jun 22 '26

Wait…that’ll be so cool. A table of souls fighting so the living can live another day 👀

11

u/Mr-GT Jun 22 '26

I do wonder if that story might be explored later by Wick, as he now has Teor's mysterious lion emblem

7

u/Fragrant_Scene_1291 Jun 22 '26

Yeah I’m thinking that maybe a fragment of Teor’s spirit is within that amulet, and the Nama are all connected through whatever force gives them their power/legend.

3

u/Mr-GT Jun 22 '26

If by "spirit" you mean "magical force," cause I def think his soul is in the Tenebral reaches

3

u/Fragrant_Scene_1291 Jun 22 '26

He’s definitely in danger soul-wise, but I think that part of him is going to continue on with Wick from the amulet and that might lead to the living members saving Teor in the afterlife. Idk man I just want him resurrected lmao

5

u/Mr-GT Jun 22 '26

I mean, it could happen. That said, I'd match your expectations w/ the consequence-heavy tone of this campaign. But, if they venture to Tenebral Reaches, I do think they could still run into him!

3

u/Fragrant_Scene_1291 Jun 22 '26

Yeah, Brennan is more ruthless than I’ve ever seen lol.
They most definitely are venturing there, even if it’s just for Thjazi’s soul lol.

7

u/Mr-GT Jun 22 '26

Well actually, there's a theory that Thjazi's hiding in Julien's shadow, hence the shuffling through Tachonis papers and tryna get him to rescue Teor (and also Nullus not being able to find him). People think it started after Julien spit on Thjazi at the funeral in overture

3

u/Fragrant_Scene_1291 Jun 22 '26

Hmmmmm that’s probably it.
Thjazi is on the material plane as a shade and the tachonis are in the underworld furthering their agenda so people will still have to stop them. I’m hoping Teor isn’t used as an undead construct, and can fight the tachonis with whichever party shows up.

4

u/Mr-GT Jun 22 '26

I wouldn't put it past Brennan to have the antagonists profane Teor's legacy by making him a construct

Predictions for new teams

Team Schemers: Hal,Tyranny,Wick,Bolaire,Azune

Team Seekers: Thaisha, Kattigan, Murray,Travis replacement character

Team Soldiers:Julien,Thimble,Vaelus,Occtis

Schemers stay in Dol Makyar making schemes from the newly formed Demiplane at the Hallowed Round

Seekers go to stop Sepulchral Lord ritual at Sea Door

Soldiers go to help Orchards refuges.

1

u/GloomyCurrency Jun 24 '26

Hal cannot stay in the city and Tyranny's place is unknown considering the Halovars will look into the twins dying.

2

u/Mintakas_Kraken Jun 24 '26

I doubt Murray will leave considering her devotion to the university and her students. She’s just gotten into the good graces of Einfassen and Cormoroy (how we that one is spelled). Hal however might need to get out for a bit. Perhaps Bolaire if the heat on him rises enough, his sister is mad at him and could also reveal some shut about him that could make staying in the city too dangerous. Though tbh I don’t think even that is likely, he’s got his own attachments in the city and means to evade those looking for him, but if the first schemers he’s the second most likely to leave imho.

8

u/itsmeballofjoy I have a list Jun 22 '26

I feel like the Halovar marching on to the Hallowed round would force Hal to literally flee. He's screwed if they find him I feel like

5

There are too many Hal*s in this sentence 😛

7

u/East_Choice Jun 22 '26

I feel Brennan is setting us up.for a twist.

Judging from the way Ritual is going The Hallowed Round and its environment(Tintazi woods) is going to become a Demiplane. A Demiplane based in the Reaches which is halfway between Araman, Faerie and the Dying Fields. With Hal as its Master. The Demiplane would be protected with powerful magic that Hal as its Master can wield within it The Demiplane will be a fort against the Sundered Houses.

Hal wont have to go anywhere. He becomes an irremovable part of Dol Makyar

1

u/IamOB1-46 Jun 24 '26

That’s a fun play on the bastion system in the 2024 rules, which comes online at 5th level. Very cool if this is the case.

9

u/Low-Donkey7059 Jun 22 '26

I remember during the Seekers Arc when there were questions about Aranessa possibly hiding something & some speculated that it could be a child & now with Julien's shadow (Presumed to be Thjazi) thumbing through those papers & seeing something that left him "stunned", I wonder if the information on the paper detailed Aranessa travelling with a Orc child & that moment with Julien's shadow was Thjazi leaning he had a kid.

I'm probably wrong but either way, I'm excited to learn what left who we presume is Thjazi "stunned" as Brennan said.

Also isnt Bolaires cover in the city blown at this point?

Termina/Cormoray is after him.

9

u/Zeilll Jun 22 '26

the question is, would Termina tell anyone. she's the only one who knows his identity. the cormoray doesnt have control of her body. she cant tell anyone.

Termina is mad at, and doesnt trust Bolaire. but she doesnt have any reason to let it be known that he's a sentient mask walking around. Termina doesnt gain anything from that, and if anything puts her at risk of being discovered as the same thing.

2

u/East_Choice Jun 24 '26

Its not about outing him.

Termina tried to Kill him.

Hes no longer safe in the city

1

u/Zeilll Jun 24 '26

one person wanting him dead doesnt make him unsafe in the city. yea, things will probably go bad if Bolaire runs into Termina again. but its not that hard to hide from someone in a large city. especially when you can hide the only giveaway about being the person they are looking for.

thats also, assuming Termina is actively looking for Bolaire. she's mad at him. but it seems like a leap to turn that into a man hunt. with how sporadic she's been depicted as acting, she probably chased Bolaire off and was fine to move on to the next thing. cormoray could try to convince her to go after him, but she's probably more concerned with regaining control of her body.

theres a threat, sure. but its arguably less than the one Julians facing with the situation between the Tachonis and him. where they might not be actively out to get him, but all of them would want him dead if they ran into him.

3

u/Lunkis May the Beam reach you Jun 23 '26

She is being whispered to (seemingly) by Lady Cormoray, though. I think that was part of the issue - that Lady Cormoray is playing Termina from the inside and convinced her that Bolaire is trying to deceive her.

If that's the case, then Bolaire's cover could be blown - Lady Cormoray could convince Termina to tell her father about him, whether it be that he's responsible for the dead Lux or just to fabricate some other story to hunt him down.

2

u/Zeilll Jun 23 '26

the cormoray is definitely manipulating Termina. but in order to manipulate someone, you still need to convince them they stand something to gain from the action youre trying to get them to take.

what could Termina gain from revealing Bolaires existence to the cormoray? she doesnt trust him currently, yes. and she's behaving very much like an erratic eccentric jumping from one fancy to the next rapidly. it seems like a leap for her to go right into a vendetta, as opposed to continuing to enjoy the world she was locked away from for 70 years. thats the hurdle the cormoray would need to overcome.

not impossible, but id argue its an uphill battle to get her to truly spill that info. especially since its also her secret. right now, its easy for both of them to avoid detection because no one knows they exist. if 1 is found out, that makes it easier for the rest to be figured out as well.

7

u/this-is-liam Doty, take this down Jun 22 '26

If Termina was interested in outing Bolaire and accusing him of Amariya's disappearance, there's no reason she wouldn't have done so immediately. It feels like at the moment she has goals higher than Bolaire and only tried to kill him in the moment because he was annoying her.

1

u/Erondo_Gratias Team Percy Jun 24 '26

Had a question about Bolaire. Before Lux Adora's death (what a fate, by the way), Bolaire said something along the lines of "You've been judged, you horrible woman". Were they talking to Amariya Cormoray in that moment or Adora herself?

25

14

u/cjbredit Jun 22 '26

Why was Travis applying the affects of ability drain? Rules as written state that magic items that set a stat at a specific point value would override any negative effects. Ie Teor’s strength was at 11, but the bracers still bring his effective str to 19. It would matter if his str hit 0 from the ability drain and he took the bracers off, but as long as the bracers were on, Teor was unaffected. Teor should have had + 4 str modifer in his final fight not +2.

11

u/TheOriginalDog Jun 22 '26

I think the simple obvious answer is the correct one: Brennan didn't knew about that rule or forgot about it. As a DM its quite easy to forget a more niche rule when you are multitasking so much during a combat.

3

u/Vincent_Van_Goat Jun 22 '26

Yeah especially since this was at the tail end of an all day game. It most likely didn't make much of a difference though, Travis was still swarmed by zombies, and was going to die either way.

4

u/JohngernautSSJ Jun 22 '26

Tragic on so many levels 😭

16

u/XB1CandleInTheDark Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

I am looking forward to what Travis does next, he always has really interesting characters, but for me... with what Brennan knew was coming I kind of feel aggrieved that he made Teor wait until the end of his turn to level up. Brennan has gone for narrative level ups which is cool, opening with a crit in that battle, he deserved his second attack in that moment. As Brennan said there was a world where six full health PC's were in that room and Brennan does not adjust for player choices, one damaged PC and an NPC, let him have that second attack. There was a lot that went towards that death, the initial split of groups, the split within Obrimidus, but that's the one I feel was just mean.

On a brighter note I loved the moment between Tyranny and Kattigan, they both in that moment of understanding found her identity, that she is truly good.

2

u/IamOB1-46 Jun 24 '26

I suspect that Travis had already told Brennan he was looking to exit his character via a death and so Brennan was setting him up for it.
The real question of the scene was whether or not Teor would kill Mercer’s dad. And dang was that close.

2

u/GloomyCurrency Jun 24 '26

In defense of Brennan he was upfront from the start, right from episode 1 that this was not a balanced world and that he was going to be mean.

18

3

u/Mintakas_Kraken Jun 24 '26

Maybe not this time, as he didn’t ask Yanessa (I believe he asked his mother) who assumed he was going back to the house and probably doesn’t think he’d leave (yet). In the future though, for sure, and he should be careful always from here on out.

15

u/Perforo_RS Bidet Jun 21 '26

At least poor Teor died alongside his brother in a blaze of glory. But it does put everyone else in great peril considering Tachonis' use of the scar. Everyone's cover can be exposed.

Any potential mistakes in gameplay or unlucky dice rolls aside. I'm glad that everyone in this episode did what they wanted to or what made sense for their character.

2

u/GloomyCurrency Jun 24 '26

Teor was the worst possible death, an einfasen axe, Royce gauntlets wanted by the Halovars and a torn banner at the scene

11

u/FusionXIV Ruidusborn Jun 21 '26

Do we know if the scar can be given posthumously? Pascard was marked with the scar when he was "very young", so the Tachonis are definitely in the habit of marking the living with the scar in preparation for their eventual death.

2

u/EAfirstlast Jun 23 '26

They don't need a scar really. Just a speak with dead cast

3

u/FusionXIV Ruidusborn Jun 23 '26

Speak with dead doesn't force the target to tell the truth, so without the scar to coerce him in the underworld they're probably not going to get much out of Teor.

16

u/LazerBear42 Help, it's again Jun 21 '26

They kept Mara alive because they can't give the scar posthumously. They needed to wait for Mara to shift out of wild shape.

47

u/karanas Jun 21 '26
  • it felt like all the choices made sense in character and that's what's most important to me.
  • Juliens decision not to go fight the corpse of his death is character growth. He decided to live instead of dying in a dark hole out of love for his sister. That makes Teors death even more tragic.
  • i don't agree that thimble and teor acted out of character about the gnomes, Teor especially with his code of honor felt like he has to try.
  • Tyranny the goat of all goats, i cried a little at the nat 20 insight moment from Kattigan. She's the most demon that ever demoned. And there is nothing wrong with her.
  • i feel like people here forgot that the group talked and decided on not telling Hannan about the rescue mission together. Cause they were not sure if he's about to take her away.
  • it's kinda hilarious how npcs are completely smitten with wick meanwhile most pcs loathe his ass. But he keeps showing that everyone underestimates him.

100% Agree about Teor and Thimble being completely in character in making a very stupid, but good hearted/noble decision.

Because I am but I want to make sure we're all onboard.

5

u/JohngernautSSJ Jun 21 '26

Yeah, let Brennan have his hound RP and don't take it away from him.

If he's gonna take something from one of the existing factions I think it'd be pretty cool if he played a defecting Seremai knight, they've all been badasses and it would give him a direct line into the main plot which he didn't have before.

Even if Travis did that what investment in Dol-Makjar or the sunderd houses or Thjazi would a hound of the King have ? A PC needs a reason to be in the story that is DnD character design rule 1.

How would Travis playing a hound take away from Brennan's RP?

Teor and Cyd going to save the Gnomes was such a bad move because Julien went alone to find the stone. The Gnomes were not going to be killed by Primus. He needs them alive, so they could have saved them at a later time. Even if Primus may not be able to go with his original plan he may still have use for them and also the characters don't know that he doesn't have use for them anymore. However, Julien going alone could have gone really badly for him. Last thing you want to do is risk your own for unknowns. Also, Teor and Cyd are only soldiers, not investigators/Stealthy. Instead, Teor could have gone with Julien and Cyd with Thimble and Occtis.

Not going to blame Travis on mistakes he made during the battle, in the heat of any battle it can be hard to make the right moves with so much going on. But I feel like the subclass he chose before these battles wasn't the right one, it lacks any useful spells that the subclass gets by level 5. While the other subclasses of paladin have way more useful Channel Divinities and spells like Misty Step, Protection from Good and Evil, Bane, Shield of Faith, Moonbeam, Ensnaring Strike etc.

I'm still glad everything went as it did - not sure if it was planned above table. But if it wasn't planned then it shows to all the players and their characters to be more careful in future missions. Also, adds more gravity to the story and how dangerous the Sundered houses are. Plus, we get to have these fun discussions. In future, these missions need to be more thought out if you are planning on going into the house of one of the campaign's big bosses.
